it was a very special moment to me when rocky offers grace its fuel to go back home. it'll take rocky 6 more years to get back, but it'll mean that grace will get to go home too. and grace immediately starts crying, utterly shattered at the mercy, the grace, that's been extended to him, something he didn't ask for but desperately desperately needed and wanted. the scene is overwhelmingly brimming with hope and i think that changed the game for me, that got me fully on board with this movie, because it is all about hope and self-sacrificing... but maybe that doesn't always mean you have to die

grace's fellow astronauts were all ready to die, gladly and suicidally accepting it and urging grace to accept it too, but grace wanted badly to live! very very badly to live! and he was forced anyway to commit to this suicide mission that doesn't have a single guarantee or real hope (with his memories gone), until he meets rocky- who offers all of that and more. what a special scene and message!!!!! you don't have to die to save others!!! you can give all you've got and still come out the other side!!! a hail mary is a prayer for relief and reassurance, especially in an hour that might call for our death, but that does not always mean death must follow!!! you are allowed to have hope!!

mm nothing i just can’t stop thinking about the fact that when they get to erid, grace is actively dying.

rocky hasn’t been home in nearly 50 years. he hasn’t seen adrian in nearly 50 years. but he can’t revel in it yet, because the mission isn’t over. not until grace is safe.

when the Hail Mary arrives on erid, rocky frantically radioes down and tries to explain the situation as calmly as he’s able. he leaves a message to adrian - i’m here. i love you. please be patient just a little while longer.

rocky is begging grace to just hold on a little longer. they’re almost home. just hold on.

i just think about the chaos that must’ve been the arrival on erid a lot and how terrified rocky must’ve been that he wasn’t going to be able to save grace.

In my little, crossover-obsessed brain when Grace started thinking about how unlikely he was to succeed and how far from Earth he was with almost no chance of return, he would listen to Mark Watney's logs to remind himself that nothing was impossible.

i think rocky and grace should gleefully lie to each other. they're just making shit up all of the time. rocky has no idea which earth traditions are real and which are elaborate jokes for grace's personal amusement. grace is never sure if rocky is teaching him actual eridian gestures or random movements to make him seem insane. do eridians actually have 5 hearts. do humans actually see scary television shows in their sleep. there is NO trust in this relationship. they are fucking with each other constantly

Spoilers for the Project Hail Mary director's commentary but they confirmed what I thought was just my own wacky hare-brained theory is actually 100% true.

There's that scene where Grace is sitting alone in the Don't Go Crazy room looking at an image of a beach, and he looks to the side and sees himself walking towards him. Waves splash over his sneakers, and you wonder for a tiny moment if this is real, maybe it's one of his memories. But then, the ship alerts that it's decelerating, he rushes upstairs, and the moment is never brought up again.

The version of Grace walking on the beach is wearing the same outfit that he wears at the end of the movie on Erid.

Chris and Phil confirmed in the commentary that in that tiny moment, Grace is getting a glimpse at his future self and his future life. He hasn't even met Rocky yet at this point, he barely remembers anything about the mission he's on, but he's promised a happy ending. He just doesn't know it.

ryland grace and rocky are platonic soulmates, they are sam and frodo, meant to be together despite what the universe tries to throw at them. deepest form of love between them but it's just because they are destined to be each other's friends of the soul, god i love them so much

I adore the way Rocky has a new suit for visiting Grace by the end of the movie. When they're on Eridian and Rocky comes to visit Grace, I almost expected him to be in his lil bubble thing, but its not, he has a much better, form fitting suit, probably specially redone and re tested so he could visit Grace whenever he wanted!

They so cute, I love them

Rockys list of the pros and cons of humans.

Pros:

Friendly

Good at space travel

Machines that think???

Light sense! (Very useful)

Can abort sleep if needed

Cons:

Will eat in front of you

Leaky

Bad at looking after themselves (Refuse to sleep even when they need to. Very confusing)

Don't live long enough

Sample size of one, more research needed.

Rocky getting one of those tattoo markings on his body when Grace passes away as a way to remember him. All of Adrian and Rocky's children having a similar marking because he was so pivotal to Rocky that he needed some way for his generations of children to remember the man from the Sol, from Earth who helped saved their Sun and their lives.

I love that we don't actually have any canon characterisation for Adrian, but we all know how amazing they have to be just because Rocky married them. Like, of course they're kind and sweet and smart and really cool. They chose Rocky and Rocky chose them.
