‘Take me with you. For laughs, for luck, for the unknown. Take me with you.’
The Last Unicorn is my fav book along with one of my fav movies

It was amazing, watching the lively atmosphere mellow out as the night went on. It astounded her, even, how similar it was to the circus. Sure the performances may have been different, but the feel of it was just the same. People coming to be entertained in a safe environment.
Phoebe watched from behind the counter, arms propped, keeping an eye on the few customers who loitered about the bar. It had been a busy first day (of many, she was sure), but it wasn’t over yet.
But–she could allow herself a few moments, she decided, as she felt a tiny rumble against the table, the voice following it making her face break out into a grin. Phoebe turned to coworker, delighted and somewhat honored that he had come to see her.
“O’ course. I always got plenty o’ minutes te spare with ye, Ralph,” Phoebe said. Her eyes softened as she looked at him. It really had been a long time, and she hadn’t got as many chances as she had wanted to see him when she moved here. “I know what ye mean,” she sighed. “I’m glad te see ye. Can I get y’anythin’?”
He felt foolish in his assumption that she would be overwhelmed, as her smile dispelled any doubts he had brought with him to the bar counter. It was a familiar expression, the look she had, a warmth that was accompanied by the friendly phantoms of a place that felt like another world entirely. Ralph found himself feeling momentarily dazed by the nostalgic look in her eyes, the same friendliness in her face, and he returned it with an honest smile of his own.
She could always make him smile, and had remained one of the few people who possessed such a magic.
“Me? Oh, nah–I’m alright, I think…” the minotaur rumbled, in his usual manner, his shoulders raised in a brief shrug. “Actually–no, maybe just…a water, I guess, if you’re not doing anything” he stammered.
“I just wanted t’chat, really. Feels like a while, since we’ve done that. But you seemed so busy, before–that’s the way things usually seem t’be, around here. Gets a lot of business, this place…” Ralph explained, gesturing about the (mostly empty) joint with a sweep of his hand. “Guess that’s…that’s better than being bored, though.”
His smile only caused her own to grow. That simple expression reminded her how much she had missed him, like she did all those that had left for one reason or another. She had only been able to stand and watch, wishing them the best in life. It was hard not to take moments spent with another for granted. But in time she had learned to appreciate them, no matter how fleeting they were.
“It ‘as,” Phoebe agreed before laughing under her breath. “I noticed. Place’s certainly gets busy don’ it? Nothin’ I can’t ‘andle though.”
Phoebe gave a nod. It was better than having no money for food, too. She felt that lady luck had blessed her twofold. One for steady-paying job. The other for the person sitting at the bar in front of her. The unicorn gave one more quick look around to check if any one looked like they would want any more drinks. Finding none, she turned back to Ralph.
“Tell ye what. Lemme go get ye yer water, and we can talk for as long as we want,” Phoebe promised, giving his hand a gentle pat before leaving to get him his glass.

The strip joint always had a consistent downtime between the end of dinner time and the midnight hour, where the vibrant lights would dim and the constant pound of the bass would die down. A few lingering patrons were hovering about the bar, sipping at half-empty drinks and taking quick glances at the stage, but the liveliness of the busy hours was fading. It was the first time, in a long time, Ralph felt like he could lift his eyes from the patrons and turn them towards the club’s newest employee.
Ralph paced over to the nearest bar stool, half-sitting and half-standing on the two-sizes-too-small seat, and tapped a single finger to get his coworker’s attention. “You got a minute?” he asked, brow raised’t mean t’bother you, on your first day, and all, s’just…nice t’be working together, y’know?”
The bar trembled subtly under a new strain, as Ralph laid both his arms across the counter. “Again, that is–it’s been a long time.”
