"Oh hey!" Arlo smiled, watching as the dog came barreling towards him, leash attached to his collar. He'd kneeled forward, knees bent in an attempt to grab the leash for whoever it was that was inevitably missing their dog. "Come here bo-" he spoke, though, the speed of the dog's movements mixed with Arlo's already poor equilibrium made him exhale just as the dog darted past him, knocking him over in the process. He'd closed his eyes, stiffened his body to help the blow of the impact, only to realize a moment later he'd landed in something wet. Eyes opened slowly as someone darted passed him, muttering a 'sorry man, gotta get my dog.' as they ran past and Arlo sat up a little straighter, only then noticing he'd fallen in a puddle of mud. That definitely was going to take awhile to get out of his curls. He'd gotten so caught up in trying to figure out how to get home without walking all the way back he hadn't noticed the redhead standing by, and once he did his eye met her gaze. "It's not nice to stare you know?"
Phoebe was walking home when she saw the whole thing go down. She watched as the man was trying to catch what she assumed was his dog and the dog was definitely not listening. Then one minute the man was standing and the next, he was in then mud. Phoebe let out a laugh and she covered her mouth as she watched the other run by and then the first one noticing she was there. She kept her mouth covered, trying not to show she was finding this all amusing. "Sorry." She let out a snort and pursed her lips together. "I was just witnessing all that." @arlocontreras
"Your stepdad a mechanic then? Or just handy with cars and the like?" He asked, not receiving any mixed feelings at the mention of the man. He wasn't threatened or annoyed. He was realistic over the fact he was late to entering her life. "It's practical, smart idea." He told her, stirring the pan once more before turning to her. "I think it's very you, it's a great step." He nodded, moving to get their plates. "So when's the uh.. Enrolling period? When would you be starting?" Cael asked, just to get a fuller picture. "Will you stop working at the gas station?" @phoebecarver
"He's handy with cars. And technical stuff. He works for some IT company or something." She really had no idea what the exact job was. She didn't get to be around a whole lot after her mother started seeing him and now she didn't talk to him at all. Smiling, she nodded. "Thank you." It meant a lot to Phoebe that her dad approved of this. It made her happy. "I can enroll now and start in the fall. Then I should graduate in two years." She told him. "Yeah. I was thinking if I got in, I could apply at one of the auto shops. Maybe Lucy's Auto or something." @caelxmontgomery
Anthony listened as she spoke, noting the way she was rambling on. Nerves tended to get the better of people during interviews. He remembered when he first joined the air force, thinking back to the lanky teen boy that he was and how intimidated he was by the men that were recruiting at the local high school. Not that he needed to be, because of his family's history. "Okay," he said with a nod of his head. "I'm going to take a chance." Anthony didn't hesitate to say as she trailed off, having made up his mind rather easily. "We've got a few mechanics already that you can mentor with, myself and," he looked to his desk a moment, "we might be able to see about some sort of tuition reimbursement for school." @phoebecarver
As she waited a moment for him to talk, she played with her hands and felt like that maybe he was going to deny her. But, he said he was going to take a chance and her eyes widened in surprise. "Really?" She asked, a smile coming to her face. "That would be amazing." Phoebe sat up a little, feeling relief and more confident about all this. She knew her dad didn't mind with the tuition, but honestly if he got money back because of it, she would be happy. "When can I start?" @anthonyxblake
He shrugged, "I do not know if it is for people your age." It was not for him, but with his line of work, he tended to dress nicely in casual suits. "Alright, but the offer stands," he smiled. He still felt bad that her pants had to tear like they did. He had no other idea where the board could have gone, so he hoped it was around the parking lot. "I am not sure," he looked around under cars and stuff. He shook his head, "Have you looked under there?" he pointed at a dumpster. @phoebecarver
She laughed a little bit and shook her head. "And what are you? Forty something? Was it even in style when you were my age?" She asked him, nodding as he repeated the offer was still good, and kept looking for her skateboard. There was seemingly no sign of it anywhere and as the man asked if she checked by the dumpster, she looked over and ran up to it. Checking under it, she saw it underneath. Getting on the ground, she reached under and was able to pull it out. "Yes." She grinned as she stood up and checked it over, making sure it was all good. Then she looked herself over and scrunched her nose up. "Definitely going to need to go shower now." Looking at the man, she nodded. "Thanks for the help." And with that, she was back on the board and heading towards her apartment building. @venixvitale

When Wren took a seat at the next assigned table, he was glad to see a familiar face. Although he'd willingly signed up for this event, he was just about ready to call it a night. Getting to know complete strangers became exhausting after a while. Sure, he didn't know a lot of things about Phoebe, but he at least knew her more than most of the people here. "Long time, no see," he said with a laugh. "So, did'ya end up getting that job?" Leaning forward, he clasped his hands and rested them on the table. "I know, I know. This is speed dating or whatever, but I haven't gotten to ask you yet."
Seeing Wren taking the seat across from her, she smiled at him. "Hey. I know." She laughed and nodded. "Yeah, actually. Put my two weeks in at the gas station and start in June. I can officially put you on the list to look at your car if you need." She waved him off. "Hey, it's okay. Better late than never, right? And honestly, I'm way more comfortable with you here than some random person. I swear I have no idea what to even say." @wrxnxashby

"So, Phoebe." Devon shifted the conversation, propping his arms on the table in between them. "Humour me for a second. I've heard all the things being said tonight and honestly some of them surprised me that their date wasn't stopped right then and there--" For it was very easy to eavesdrop on conversations around them. Kind of came with the territory. "What is your most favourite pickup line? Doesn't have to be a good one, as long as it's your favourite."
Phoebe looked over at him as he asked the question and she gave him a quizzical look. "That's assuming I have one. Aren't pickup lines cheesy? I don't think I'd ever fall for one." Mainly because she would judge someone hard if they did. "I'd rather do small talk than hear a pickup line. But, I guess the least worst one I've heard is, 'Did we go to school together? I could've sworn we had chemistry'." @devonxgoodwin
"Something just noticeable enough to pay 'em back without pissing them off too much." It was a good idea. Wren was all for revenge, even if the revenge was such a minor thing, it wouldn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. "I'll be the first one there. Just let me know." With a nod, he leaned against the counter. "I think so. I just want something that could make me look more legit as an author. I don't know if college is the thing to do that but... I just don't want to make a fool of myself."
She nodded. "Exactly. Gotta do it subtly." Phoebe agreed with him and smiled. "I definitely will. And maybe I can work a deal out for you." She shrugged, though she didn't want to push it since she'd be knew. "An author? That'd be amazing. I don't know much about it, but college or no, it's something you could do." She heard the bell and looked around. "I'll get out of your way. We can talk more later." @wrxnxashby

This time Cael was prepared. Hugging wasn't something that came easy to him, the whole physical contact and being close in one's vicinity thing having been something he hadn't had for a very long time, but now he easily wrapped his arm around her for as long as she made the hug last, allowing himself the comfort it brought along with it. "I know, you wouldn't have asked otherwise." He told her, letting go when the sizzling of the stove became louder and moving towards it to give it a quick stir. "So, what made you choose that study?" @phoebecarver
For a moment, she stayed in the hug. It was a thing that her and her mother never did. It was neighbors who took care of her most that would hug her when she needed. Then as she got to be a teenager, that kinda stopped. It was more recently that she started allowing herself to open herself up more. And hugging Cael meant a lot to her. As he let go to check on the food, she leaned against the counter. "I've been doing some mechanics for a few years now. My stepdad taught me and it just stuck." She shrugged. "And it's something I like so might as well get paid to do it." @caelxmontgomery
He didnt mean for this to happen, but here he was trying to make it better. "I mean, I don't know what's cool to someone your age." He didn't know today's fashion. "But yeah, I mean, you tore up your pants because of me," so he found it only fair that he would buy her a new pair if she wanted it. "There is a parking lot there," he looked towards it. "Maybe it went there," he hoped so, over it fully being lost. There was a few cars and a dumpster so he was going to start looking all over. @phoebecarver
She laughed a little bit and moved some hair from her face to behind her ear. "You mean, you don't know if ripped jeans are back in style?" She asked and shrugged. "I really don't care. You don't have to worry about it." Phoebe told him before looking towards where he pointed. "Maybe." She said and followed him over towards the parking lot. She really hoped it didn't get this far, but where else would it be? "Any luck?" @phoebecarver
"I can look over it while we talk." Anthony told her, shrugging his shoulders. "I promise this isn't goin' to be some formal interview for a white collar job." He shook his head, gesturing for her to follow him into the office. "I'm looking to hire people that want to be here, that want to learn." Even if they hadn't had much experience, Anthony was happy to lend a helping hand. "My brothers and I just bought the business, so we could use some extra help as we get our end of it all figured out." Anthony sat down behind the desk, something he was still getting used to. He placed her resume and application on the desk before him. "What made you interested to apply here?" @phoebecarver
"Okay." She said and she followed him towards his office. She was more nervous now that she knew who he was and that this was happening, but tried to stay calm. Phoebe was quiet as she listened to him, the voices starting to pop into the back of her head, but she ignored them. She sat down at the desk and she looked at the man. "I like working on cars." She said, her heart picking up a little bit. "My stepfather got interested in it and showed me how to fix things myself so I've always just fixed my car. Sometimes a friend's car as well." She explained. "But I've decided to go to school for mechanics and I could've waited until I graduated to apply, but I saw the listing and hoped you'd take a chance. I can show you what I can do, if you want. I'm willing to do anything." She was rambling and she knew it, so a slight blush filled her cheeks, but she kept eye contact and hoped she wasn't making a fool of herself. @anthonyxblake
"You don't pay me back." Cael stated as matter of fact, already holding up a hand in case she was going to object. If it had been him in her place, he would have objected. "I never went to college. I had the same cards dealt that you did. No father, a mental illness.. And while I had a mother who wanted the best for me, I made all the wrong choices. You're working on your future, and I'd like to invest in that without getting anything in return. Except for you being happy." Whether that meant she was going to drop out in three years because she decided she wanted to be a vet instead, even then he'd wholeheartedly support her. "And actually, I'm your dad, it comes with the package. You can't say no." @phoebecarver
Hearing her dad. she gave him a look. "That's not what..." She stopped as he continued and explained why he was doing to do this. She was about to agree when he said she couldn't say no and Phoebe laughed. "Okay. I can't say no." She told him before going around the counter and gave him a quick hug. "Thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me. My mom would've never done something like this for me." She sighed talking about it. "And you know I wouldn't ask unless I was sure about this, right?" @caelxmontgomery
"See, I wish I could just not give the customer their coffee or whatever, but I don't know how much my manager would like that." And he wasn't interested in getting fired all because he decided he wouldn't take someone's crap. Instead, he just took it stride and tried to not let it ruin his day. "If you do that, I'll be your first customer. Been meaning to get my car into the shop." But procrastination had become a new hobby for Wren. "I'm contemplating between going to school, or finding a job that's a little more permanent. I figure if I can get into college, it could help my future writing career."
Phoebe laughed a little. "Yeah, that kinda goes against your job." She told him. "But, you could make their coffee a little less strong." She suggested with a shrug. She wasn't sure if that was something that would be noticeable, but worst case he could say that they switched brands. "Yeah? I'll make sure to mention I already have a client if I get the job." The redhead smirked. "Is that what you want to go to school for then? Writing?" @wrxnxashby

"You've clearly got more potential than working at a gas station, yeah." Which had been easy for Cael to see. He didn't need to have known Phoebe his entire life to know so. The short time that they'd properly grown into a father daughter role had been more than enough to figure out what kind of woman she was. The amount of potential and spirit. Yet when she admitted she wanted to go to school and become a mechanic there was still that pang of pride. He'd never gone to college himself, so to see her take that step, and to be a mechanic on top of that as well, stepping away from the mainstream and do something she wanted, how could he not be proud? Perhaps his eyes reflected it where the rest of his face wasn't, still processing her words. His expression was still deadpan serious when she asked him for funds to pay it. He was still conflicted about the money he had to his name, credit to the state of New York. He was still slowly in the process of using it to do right rather than see it as blood money, or have it remember him of his time in Rikers. Spending it to help his daughter? How could that be a bad thing? "Well.. I have one condition." @phoebecarver
A smile crossed her face and she watched Cael for a moment. It was nice knowing he saw potential in her when all her mom ever said was that she was going to be working at McDonald's or something her whole life. Sometimes Phoebe couldn't believe that she had found her father and that their relationship was actually good. She felt like continuously pinching herself to make sure it was real. As she talked about what she wanted to do, there was a shift in his eyes. Like happiness. Was this pride? She wasn't sure, but it was better than the alternative. She waited with a breath caught in her while she looked at her father and then released it. "What's the condition?" @caelxmontgomery
Anthony busied himself behind the desk, not paying much attention to the young woman that was filling out the application. He didn't want her to feel pressured and he had other things preoccupying his mind. After some time, he heard her voice and it caused him to look up from the paperwork he was filling out. "Thank you." His gaze shifted quickly over the resume that was laid atop. "I'm the manager. Well, owner." He answered, straight to the point. "Would you like to interview now?" @phoebecarver
She nodded as the man said his thanks and she waited for an answer. As he admitted to being the owner, Phoebe stood a little taller and a slight blush came to her cheeks. "Oh, wow. That's... cool." Her heart was racing a little and she hoped she hadn't made a fool of herself in front of the owner. "Yeah. If you have time." She paused. "Don't you want to look over my resume and application first?" She asked. She wasn't fully ready for an interview, but she wasn't about to turn it down either. @anthonyxblake
"I swear they just act incompetent to make my day harder so they feel better about themselves temporarily. If they can make some kid at the cafe feel like shit, it'll somehow make their day better." Not that the rude customers got to him most times, but on the bad days, a customer like that could make it so much worse. Sometimes he blamed himself, like he could actually predict that the other would get upset about something small, but he tried his best not to do that. Rationally, he knew it wasn't his fault that they'd act like that, and more often than not his customers didn't act that way. "Seriously? I can only imagine the people you deal with there. I've been thinking of leaving, finding something outside of customer service. You ever considered that?" he asked, turning on his heel and setting her hot latte on the counter.
She laughed and nodded. "Sounds about right. They tend to do that sometimes at the gas station. Though, they do tend to be nicer since I'm in control if they get gas or not." Which was always a perk when she was irritated with them and told them they could either get gas for their vehicle or leave. "Yeah. Actually, I'm going to apply for a mechanic position at Lucy's Auto." Phoebe old him and grabbed the latte, but made no effort to move. "What do you think of doing?" @wrxnxashby
