Just something about me being a creep who doesn't talk to anyone but this one girl. Of course they ignore the fact that she's my best friend.

It didn’t surprise her in the least that he’d make a somewhat out there statement. What did surprise her was her response back. ”I’m sure if you asked nice enough- used some of that Landon family charm- they’d make an exception.” She smirked up at him, still having yet to touch her menu. The reply just came to her naturally. She didn’t have to think of what to say, the words just popped out of her mouth. It was the same thing she would have said two months ago if they’d met for lunch.
Though it of course was not two months ago. And the ease of this comment did nothing to make her any less uncertain of her current situation. In fact, if she hadn’t stopped herself should probably would have pulled a face as she thought back over her words.
This constant uncertainty was foreign to her, and she did not appreciate its’ effects.
Phoebus' eyebrow shot up without warning. That was the most unadulterated thing she had said to him since he'd returned to the academy. It was nice, not having to think about the words too much as he let a wry smile appear on his lips. This was the girl he liked. The witty one that kept him smiling and on his toes. It had been hard to find ever since he fudged things up with that stupid kissing dare. Now things were complicated.
"Cross your fingers," he replied as the waitress approached them. To the girl in the yellow polyester, it must have looked like two normal teenagers going on a date. What it actually was... well, Phoebus himself didn't even know. Esme was the one in charge of the situation. She had invited him. She had made some sort of decision and it was clear to see that Esmerelda was having trouble spitting it out.
He could wait, cheerily ordering the waffles and a root beer. Not the most manly of drinks, but maybe it can bring back the ease of the old days... Phoebus thought, his eyes flicking back to his dark haired... something as the waitress asked her what she would like to order.

Perhaps I offended them somehow? I don’t know, dear, but the point is that people judge you on things that aren’t really that bad. You shouldn’t take what they say to heart because they’re probably bitter and angry about something that isn’t your fault.

He must have looked like an idiot, just standing outside the dinner with his hands in his pockets. Phoebus had been so caught up in the silly little thing that the confession board said that he had been unfazed by Esmerelda’s out of the blue text.
It didn’t quite hit...
Phoebus held back a laugh at her moment of surprise. Her face was absolutely priceless when his presence messed up her focus on nothing. After staring at her fluster for a couple seconds, he carefully opened the menu in front of him. "Hmmm, too bad they don't offer waffles for lunch," he thought aloud without thinking. Waffles were a comfort food, a food he could use right now. Waffles were consistent, his friend. Waffles didn't kiss him and leave him confused about his love for waffles. Wait, did I just say that aloud? Phoebus momentarily panicked, trying to cover it up with a sheepish grin. Maybe she'll think it's funny. Maybe this won't be awkward at all.

There were no words to describe what was running through Esmeralda’s mind as she initially sent the text to Phoebus “Hey stranger- can we talk?” she must have written and rewritten it a thousand times. It felt like forever since she’d spoken to him. A lot had happened in that time, and she was...

It didn't quite hit him what was actually happening until a couple minutes ago. He was wearing the same clothes he had worn to class that day. <i>Should have I dressed up? Or gone more casual?</i> It was too late at any rate. Sucking in a deep breath, Phoebus finally entered the dinner. Looking around, he finally found her in the corner.
He tried to keep his face neutral, casual as he approached the table. Sliding into the seat in front of her. "H-hey."

[Text: Romani] What’s up?
[Text: Phoebus] It’s just one of my many charms I guess….. Do you want to get together? Like meet for food or something somewhere. Talk.
[Text: Romani] Uh yeah, I’m certainly very up for that.
[Text: Phoebus] Figured you would be :) Meet me in town at the diner on 1st street? Unless you have somewhere else you want to go?
[Text: Romani] The diner sounds grand.
