On 18 March 1888, 34-year-old Vincent van Gogh wrote to his friend and fellow painter 19-year-old Émile Bernard about his life in Arles, and how it would be cheaper if other artists joined him there.

Van Gogh also included a sketch, “a study that I’m trying to make something of – sailors with their sweethearts going up to the town, which is profiled by the strange silhouette of its drawbridge on a huge yellow sun.”

Bernard would not join van Gogh in Arles, but did send a painting as a gift with Paul Gauguin, who joined van Gogh in October 1888, which ended in disaster.
