The 'Selaron Steps' in #Rio | Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón claimed these as "my tribute to the Brazilian people". 215 steps decorated with ceramic tiles over 23 years of work. Visitors would bring Jorge tiles from all over the world to help him to finish the project, he was quite poor and would have to sell a painting to be able to continue the project. A sad end to his story when he was found dead in 2013 in front of the staircase he created. Doesn’t seem clear what happened to him, some suggest suicide, which is very sad. There’s a lot of people but it’s worth it, battle your way through and you’ll find a spot near a table of street musicians who jam samba while the crowd dance and sing. More #sugarloafmountain spam for you. To get here (unless you are staying nearby) get an Uber, they are great value and are safe and pretty reliable. I have had a few cancel on me but that happens at home. Getting a SIM card here is a mare, you need a CPF (Brasil social security number). They say you can get one with your passport but most mobile shops aren’t interested in helping you, at least not any I went too. Saúde do Rio! This is a ‘chopp’ beer, which is basically like a Spanish caña. The Brazilians love add ‘y’ to the end of words, like this is called a ‘blackie’ not a black beer. To get up into the heights of the Favela you grab a motorcycle taxi and ride on the back up the winding and chaotic roads up into the Favela. Then your guide will walk you down, informing you of various facts and info. Cute electric train to take you the to the devils mouth trail. Leaves around 10/40 past each hour. Tickets are free, they don’t always hand these out so just jump on. I was lucky with my trains I didn’t have to wait there or on the return.
