Decembalex day 9 - “Loss”

“I can’t believe tomorrow I’m gonna lose you forever,” Alex hiccupped, squeezing his eyes shut although he had long since run out of tears.

“Not forever,” Mallory corrected. His voice was soft and soothing as it always was, and hearing him speak now, Alex already knew he would miss his voice dearly.

Talking when they should have been sleeping, listening to him read so effortlessly the same books that frustrated Alex to tears, laughing as they played and roughhoused together. Mallory’s voice was a comfort to him in any and every context, his friend that served as a lifeline now that his mom was gone.

Wasn’t it enough losing her? Why did he have to lose him too?

The silence hung over them for a long minute and Alex felt like that was forever, and that he wouldn’t survive the eternity of the forever that would come tomorrow.

“I told you earlier,” Mallory began, his voice wavering slightly. “I’ll write to you all the time. And when we’re grown ups, we’ll see each other again.”

Middle school is hard no matter what, but it's even harder when your only friend is thousands of miles away.

Pardon if things look a touch off about these pages, I got experimental with the canvas size looking to refine my lineart a bit more. Next update will have the official new sizing for the pages which is a happy medium between this larger size and the original.

Happy first anniversary, Sparks 🥳! (old version under readmore)

Huh, that’s some weird artifacts in their vision, must‘ve been a hard crash! I‘m sure it means nothing. 🪴

Time flies! To celebrate one year of me starting this, I decided to redraw chapter 1. It’s the shortest chapter by far, with only 4 pages, although the redraw gained another two.

Sparks is a SDV comic centering around Sam and my farmer, I’ve started it on a whim last December, after I just discovered new music. I’ve since finished 10 chronological chapters, and additional 3 that I’ll have to redraw once the time is right. It’s very dear to my heart. Nothing has brought me this much joy and pushed me this hard to improve my art before. So far I‘ve only shown it to friends who asked to read it, because I was too shy to make it public.

No more! Going forwards, I decided to post my comic to tumblr! Since most of my chapters are longer than 30 pages, I won’t post them to Instagram. Before posting, I’ll remove or tweak the risqué bits (it’s only 8 pages, dw). Right now I’m planning a 2 week posting schedule :3 after I’m caught up it will obviously slow down, I keep getting distracted drawing Sparks by drawing other Sam art.

I WON‘T redraw the remaining chapters, which means you‘ll have to deal with my humble beginnings, with chapter 2 - 6 drawn traditionally, on paper. Anatomy mistakes, flow problems, etc. included! (Not that my art is perfect now, either haha)

This is my first work of fiction, so please lower your expectations accordingly. It’s a slowburn, spans 3 years, and what I’ve drawn so far hasn’t even begun to show the more complex parts of the plot. If you‘re into awkward fluff, you‘ll be fine though!

I didn't want to put Mal in a lot of these, but I thought for a prompt like childhood, I just gotta! Their childhood together is so woven into the way I see Alex, it's hard to imagine his childhood without Mal!! :3

Decembalex day 3 - “Mermaid”

“Her music box… It’s everything to me. This and her favorite locket are all I have left of her.”

Alex has this line at the Night Market where he's like “Have you seen the mermaid show? It's my favorite…” and I think the implication is supposed to be like, oh yeah because the mermaids are beautiful half-naked women, right? But I chose to look more deeply into that line and gave him a fondness for mermaids that he got from his mom. I headcanon she was the type who had mermaid everything and was obsessed with them, so after she's gone, Alex clings to mermaids because they remind him of her. And there's even one in her music box!
