Book haul part 2: BookOutlet haul 1. I went a little nuts on BookOutlet this month. Whatever. At least they're cheap. I've had my eye on the Lady Trent books for a while, so when I saw that had the first three, I had to get them. My only complaint is that book one is paperback and the other two are hardbacks. Oh well. Anyways, I'm really excited for all these books. Now I just need to find the time to read them...|| #books #bookstagram #instabooks #bookinsta #bookhaul #bookoutlethaul #ladytrent #dianawynnejones #wheredyougobernadette #snowchild #aliashook #hidden #windinthewillows
Book haul part 1: books from Book Depository. I'm excited for all of these. I've been dying to get my hands on The Story of Alice for a while (and the US cover sucks), but it's kind of expensive, so I held off. I also really want to replace all of my Murakami books (and, of course, get new ones) with these editions. I think they're gorgeous. Angela Carter's Book of Fairy Tales has also been on my radar for a while. And I'm excited to jump back into the Mistborn world with Alloy of Law. Yay new books! || #books #bookhaul #booklove #bookworm #bookinsta #bookstagram #instabooks #bookdepository #angelacarter #alice #murakami #mistborn #alloyoflaw
This was the one Halloween read I got to in October (even though I finished it in November). I tried to read Stephen King's It, but once I started having dreams about it, I put it down and picked this up instead. And I have to say, I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed this book. It was creepy and atmospheric and appropriately tense. It was simultaneously a story of loneliness and friendship, a murder mystery, and a vampire story all rolled into one. And it was awesome. I'll admit, there were so many threads that sometimes I got confused as to what was happening, but everything eventually tied together nicely. And when I finished the book, I watched the film (the Swedish version) and it too was creepy perfection. I definitely recommend this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ || #bookstagram #instabooks #bookinsta #bookworm #booklove #books #bookreview #bookrecommendation #readingrec #letmein #lettherightonein
So I think I'm finally getting back into some semblance of a routine. I started working again two weeks ago and it's been a busy two weeks. Now that daylight savings has commenced, I basically don't get any time to take photos during the week because I'm gone during most of the daylight hours, so I have to shoot over the weekends. First up for the week: my #owlcrate unboxing. I love the bookmakers and there was a little Poe pouch in there too that I'm already using because I love it. I'm intrigued to read this month's book. It seems interesting. || #books #bookhaul #booklove #bookworm #bookinsta #bookstagram #instabooks
Here are some of my favorites from Rifle Paper Co's new edition of Alice in Wonderland. I love their Mock Turtle. And the end papers are gorgeous. I'm totally obsessed with this book. || #instabooks #bookinsta #bookstagram #150alice #alice #aliceinwonderland #riflepaperco #books #booklove #bookworm #bibliophile
I got this beauty in the mail on Friday. I preordered it a couple months ago and I could not be more excited about it. Props to Anna Bond for capturing the world of Alice so beautifully. I'll post a couple of my favorite illustrations later. So much love ❤️|| #books #booklove #bookworm #bibliophile #riflepaperco #alice #aliceinwonderland #150alice #bookhaul#bookstagram #bookinsta #instabooks
I'm sorry I've been so inactive! I wish I could say I was busy, but I've actually been sitting around doing nothing waiting until I can start my new job... Let's call it a rut. Anyway, my birthday was Monday and for my birthday, I transformed what was my office space into a library space. I'm really excited about it, it looks a million times better than it used to. Now all I need are more books... || #books #booklove #booknerd #bookworm #bookstagram #bookinsta #instabooks #homelibrary #shelfie
Man Booker Prize
The Man Booker Prize is quite a prestigious award in the literary community. Up until recently, the winner of the Man Booker Prize had to be a citizen of the Commonwealth, the Republic of Ireland or Zimbabwe. But now the only qualification to be eligible is that the book be originally published in English and published in the UK. I’ve always been aware of the Man Booker Prize, partially because it’s one of those things that publishers proudly throw on the cover of any book that has won or been shortlisted. But until recently, it didn’t really mean much to me. If I’m being honest, it still doesn’t really mean much to me. From an intellectual perspective, I know that the books shortlisted are meant to be some of the best recent releases that the literary world has to offer. But I generally don’t read books because of their literary value. I read them because I’m interested in the story.
I think what really threw Man Booker onto my radar this year was BookTube. Man Booker made a very smart marketing move when they decided to recruit “Man Booker Vloggers” this year. Four of the five vloggers they chose for this task happened to be people that I already watch, which consequently thrust all of the longlisted books onto my radar when each of these BookTubers did their Man Booker unboxing videos back in July. As I followed them as they started to read the longlist and then get together to predict what was going to be shortlisted (which they did a damn good job of), I decided that I wanted to join in on the fun. And by that, I mean I decided that I was going to challenge myself to try and read all of the shortlist between the time when it was announced and the announcement of the winner. This was particularly challenging when you consider that during that time, I was working a full time job the first two weeks, hopping into my car and driving from Michigan to Texas halfway through week two and supposedly starting a new job during the third week (which ended up not happening, so I’ve been running around trying to sort shit out for the last week and a half). Compound that with the fact that two of the shortlisted books are well over 600 pages and one of the shortlisted books hasn’t been published in the US yet, so I had to order it from Book Depository, which is a wonderful site for getting books, but they usually take two to three weeks to get me anything I order. Anyway, I have just under a week left before the announcement of the prize and I’ve managed to read A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James, Satin Island by Tom McCarthy and The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma and I’m now halfway through A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler. I think it’s safe to say that I will not be finishing the shortlist before the winner is announced next Tuesday, but hopefully I will have at least started all six books.
I guess the point of this post was to hold myself accountable to my own personal challenge since I don’t really have any bookish friends and telling my parents doesn’t accomplish anything. Now it’s out there. Anyone who stumbles upon this particularly ramble-y post will now know that I’ve challenged myself to finish as much of these books as humanly possible between now and next Tuesday. Wish me luck. I’ll check back in with my thoughts next week.
I bring you another mini bookhaul. I actually bought these last week, but I had to order Satin Island and wait for the bookstore to get it. I've decided to try to read the Man Booker shortlist before the prize is announced in October. I've already started reading A Brief History of Seven Killings and that's why it looks a little beat up. Also, I'm super excited for Saga Vol 5. || #books #bookhaul #booklove #booknerd #bookworm #bookstagram #bookinsta #instabooks #bibliophile #abriefhistoryofsevenkillings #satinisland #saga #manbookerprize
I finished Station Eleven day before yesterday. I really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure how much I was going to enjoy it at the beginning. I had a hard time figuring out how all the characters and time jumps were going to tie together, but when they finally did, it was beautiful. I definitely recommend this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ || #books #booklove #bookreview #booknerd #bookworm #bookstagram #bookinsta #readingrec #stationeleven #readingoutside #bookandnature #bookandwater #bibliophile #instabooks
It is officially my last day off of work before I pack up my stuff and head back to Texas at the end of next week. So I decided to take advantage of the gorgeous weather here and packed up some delicious cherry gummies, took my bike down to the lake, found a nice little gazebo to sit in and read Station Eleven. Day well spent. || #books #booklove #booknerd #bookworm #bookstagram #bookinsta #instabooks #bibliophile #readingoutside #bookandsnack #bookandshoes #booktote #stationeleven
It's finally getting colder outside! That means I get whip out my favorite leather jacket and some jeans and what I'm considering my final #summerread (even though summer is technically already over). Today I bring you another mini bookhaul. I bought these two lovely penguin clothbound classic editions of Treasure Island and the Odyssey at the bookshop on Mackinac Island. Next up, I read Bird Box by Josh Malerman. I really enjoyed this book. It was perfectly creepy and well written. One of the things that really could've ruined this book is the fact that after the first 50 pages or so, none of the characters were willing to go outside without a blindfold, which easily could have resulted in a book without a decent setting. Malerman overcame this by impeccably describing the world through sound and physical sensations that the characters felt while stumbling around blindfolded. It was incredible. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ || #books #booklove #booknerd #bookreview #bookworm #bookstagram #bookinsta #instabooks #bibliophile #birdbox #readingrec #summerreads
Today I bring you a mini book haul. I had a friend visit me last month and after I picked him up from the airport, we went and wondered around Front St in Traverse City for a couple hours and obviously had to stop at all the book shops. He was kind enough to buy me this lovely edition of Alice in Wonderland and the Penguin clothbound classics edition of the Jabberwocky. I'm super excited to add both of these to my library. 😄😄 || #books #bookhaul #booklove #booknerd #bookworm #bookstagram #bookaholic #bookinsta #instabooks #bibliophile #lewiscarroll #alice #jabberwocky
I took this photo like 2 weeks ago when I got my August #owlcrate and then totally forgot to post it. I was really excited about this OwlCrate. The book sounds really good (anything that gets compared to Veronica Mars is bound to good in my book) and all the goodies were pretty awesome.
