What a weekend! I spent 3 days documenting DurhamCares pilgrimage and Durham history, and ended with @thelastpartera screening an excerpt from our film at ALICE FEST, a doc festival in Durham named after one of my #wunderfemme #womenshistorymonth BAMFs, first female filmmaker Alice Guy-Blaché. Thankful to be kicking off our crowdfunding campaign today and joining other women in film! #supportwomen #womeninfilm #documentary #picturedurm (at Full Frame Theater)
This one time in 2005 or 6, Barack Obama called my parent's landline in New Jersey and we had a conversation. Some of your know my parents are writers, and my dad is a journalist. Then Senator Obama was calling my dad for a phone interview and I begged @jtimpane to let me answer it and chat with the person I knew would one day be president. He hadn't given an election bid yet, but everyone knew the buzz was mounting, even then, particularly after the DNC speech. I talked to him briefly about Rutgers where I was in school at the time, and he mostly asked me questions about myself, which I think is probably his modus operandi when talking to young people. After all, as an excellent communicator, he knows how to guide a conversation with a perfect stranger and make it feel oddly personal. I told him that I hoped he would be president some day, and he thanked me. I've never thought of Obama as an elevated heroic figure, but always as a victor of conscientious thinking, a professor, a father, someone who believes what he says or he wouldn't say it. I said goodbye and stayed on the phone listening with the mute on while my dad interviewed him about Philadelphia schools, poverty, housing, and I was impressed, as I always would be for a decade, by his clarity, understanding, and intelligence. Our future president, the one we did not deserve. He touched millions of people's lives in so many ways, but that's my little story and I'll always have it. Today is his last day in the White House. Goodbye, President Obama, and Godspeed. #barackobama #obamafarewell #thankyouobama photo by: @petesouza
Happy to share a teaser for a short film about Reyna Ortega, an organic farmworker in Ventura, CA. She's a strong defender of environmental justice and knows well the relationship of worker's rights to the health of the land. She calls the new president-elect "una mala hierba," a bad weed, for the immigrant population. Thankful to edit this piece with b.a. director/DP @monmonz_ ! Full short hopefully coming soon on the @america_heard web series when it launches in a week. . . . #farmworkersrights #americaheard #nationalmigrationweek #immigration #shortdocumentary

In the packed Mediterranean Deli on Franklin St, Chapel Hill, community members surrounded and welcomed Syrian refugee families who've recently arrived to the Triangle. We ate a tremendous meal, and a local police officer offered his protection and personal welcome. Seeing the hospitality and care of North Carolina community in the last few weeks has kept my hope alive at this time. I have seen good. Grateful to have participated in this fundraiser organized by Ruby Brinkerhoff and Med Deli owner Jamil Kadoura. You can still give and support these families here: http://mediterraneandelibenefits.com #givingtuesday #dogoodbegood #syrianrefugees #chapelhillnc (at Mediterranean Deli, Bakery and Catering)
Juniors Yixin Lin and Michelle Chen both got involved with HackDuke during their first year at Duke – Yixin as a participant and Michelle as a volunteer. This weekend, their HackDuke experience came full circle as the two, now the co-directors of the 24-hour hackathon, oversaw the fourth annual HackDuke. As the pair circulated among the three stories occupied by hackers, stopping to talk to students, sponsors and volunteers along the way, Michelle smiled.
Duke I&E is always involved and busy with great things. HackDuke is one of the best! I loved working on these photos & story with Katie Jansen.
Lamento con Alas is a short film that honors the dead along the Texas-Mexico border as it challenges Americans who seek to build walls.
Before the election, I published this reflection accompanying “Lamento Con Alas” a short film on immigrant deaths at the U.S.-Texas Border. Recognition of the dignity of immigrants and their rights seems more important today than ever.
