Black children AND BLACK ADULTS!

I struggled with this in my adult life and I can tell you that worst common quote I’ve heard is:

‘YOU AIN’T DEPRESSED… STOP IT.’

Being around my parents and friends of color, I’ve found that most equate depression with financial or social hardship, and to that end, someone is always worse off. I heard everything from ‘That’s cuz you broke!’ to 'You need to get some pussy.’ This was so damaging to me. Fortunately, I found ways to cope, but I’m very sad to know that there are many who get the very same bullshit being a Black adult or teen struggling mentally.

If you catch this, and need an ear to vent, holla at me.

Editor’s Note: People have misinterpreted this post as a criticism of individual recruiters when it is meant to highlight the predatory nature of recruitment in general. It’s the difference between institutional function and the “few bad apples” kind of myth. The function of recruiters, especially in high schools, is predatory – making all who do it culpable.

Definitely!! I was awarded a ROTC scholarship in high school, and the conditions of the scholarship is that they would cover any schooling cost and housing in an addition to a minimum $500 allowance per semester (you could receive more if you kept good grades) and you in return would complete a minimum of 4 years as a commissioned officer. But omg the recruiters were overly abrasive. It felt like I was being harassed daily. I even felt like a hostage once in their recruiting office once. I eventually turned down the scholarship mainly because I didn't want to deal with the recruiters anymore.
