Perhaps, it was a test. Though she could not begin to fathom why it would be her. Why God would choose her of all people to have her faith tested. Her faith in him was already on thin ice as of late. But if anything could make her believe in God it was this… this being that had been pestering her for the past few days.
“A flower for my beautiful lady?” He offers as he appears to her in a puff of red smoke. He is exactly as many would expect the devil to appear as; with fiery skin, red horns, forked tail, claws and teeth that could kill a man. Yet, the smile he gives her is surprisingly earnest and she can’t help but be caught off guard by it.
Still, she only gives him a frown in return, “I do not take offerings from demons.” she hisses to him quietly so the other sisters would not overhear. His smile does not falter and with wave of his hand the flower disappears, “Perhaps another time then.”
She huffs, attempting to walk in another direction before he appears before her again, “Hey, wait! Where are you going?” he whines as he follows after her like some lost puppy. If a lost puppy were nearly twice her size.
She attempts to wave him off, “Trying to get away from you! Don’t you have another wretched soul to bother?” she asks, as she comes to a stop, putting her hands on her hips as she confronts him.
This action seems to please him as he makes that boyish grin once again, “Sassy! That’s why I like you much more than the other nuns!” he puts his arms up as if to announce it to the entire convent, but no one else in the vicinity seems to acknowledge his presence as they go about their day. How blissfully unaware they were of the demon that lurked on their holy grounds, she thinks, she is almost jealous of their ignorance.
She sighs heavily as she takes his hand and drags him along with her until they reach the empty chapel. When she looks back, a part of her had hopes that he would disappear as soon as they entered it, but the proud little smirk he gives her as he steps in effortlessly immediately squanders it.
However, she has never been the type to give up, she brings him closer and closer to the large cross in the front of the church until they stand in front of all the pews. Her eyes narrow at him trying to see if he would finally just burst into hellfire and disappear. When he doesn’t, she sighs again, pressing her palm to her forehead. If not even the cross could get rid of him then what could?
“What do you want from me?” she finally asks. His eyes brighten as if he were waiting for her to ask that very question. He reaches up to take her hands in his.
“Not much.” he assures her with gleaming fangs, “Just your soul. I’d like to keep it forever if that’s alright with you, my lady?”
She can feel the blush on her cheeks burning her skin as he carefully holds her hands and she finds herself holding his in return.
If God was testing her, then she was certainly failing.
