my mom used to get so annoyed when the neighbors would cook on their charcoal grill in the summer because the swamp cooler would pull the smell of charcoal smoke inside our house. she hated it- said it gave her headaches, complained a whole bunch. i would sometimes think she was being dramatic.

now as an adult, when one of my neighbors smokes a cigarette in the shared driveway or leaves their diesel truck running right next to my swamp cooler, i hear my mother’s words coming out of my own mouth.
