I get so emotional about Newt saying âand I remember youâ in his letter because he didnât always get to remember. His memories were stolen before he woke up in the Box and imo itâs one of the greatest tragedies in the series. Thirteen years of experiences, grief, and friendships that were lost to time,,,, he had a little sister, and no one will ever know because that knowledge was taken from both of them.
But he remembered Thomas.
The importance of memory and its intrinsic connection to identity was stated in the letter (I want you to know that I'm not afraid. Well, not of dying, anyway, itâs more forgetting. It's losing myself to this virus, that's what scares me). Forgetting was conflated with losing his sense of self, both of which he considered a fate worse than death. I feel like the Gladers almost saw memory and identity as privileges. They werenât guarantees, since theyâd all forgotten everything and the threat of losing themselves was very present in their lives, both through the Changing and later with the Flare. The memories Newt made during and after the Maze were memories he fought for, as was the person he became. As he wrote the letter, he could feel the latter slipping. In the end, the memories would go too.
But. But. He held onto those memories until he was literally collapsed on the ground and half out of his mind. He remembered Thomas. And he knew he would follow him anywhere. And if he could do it all over again, he would, and he wouldnât change a thing. He would go through everything - forgetting, building himself back up from the ground, losing that self to the virus.
And I just. I just think that I remember you is such a profound admission of love from someone who has fought and is still actively fighting to do that. I may be losing myself, but I remember you. I may have lost almost everything else, but I remember you. Getting to here, where I am remembering you, has taken a world of things from me, has taken my past and my identity and nearly everyone Iâve ever loved, but I would follow you into that mess all over again, because it brought me to you, and it brought me to my family, and it brought me back to myself, and at the end of the day those things are all the same. I am dying, and I remember you.

i love how heartstopper literally hits like almost every letter in the lgbtqia+ acronym but never feels like diversity for the sake of diversity. the characters are not tokenized, stereotyped, or flattened into a letter. they are an unapologetic, queer, vibrant friend group whose identities and personalities shine.
also just the fact that.. at its core? itâs just a coming of age story about teens dealing with teen stuff. idk itâs so heartwarming to just see REAL people dealing with real things..Â
the âher dog diedâ scene is a perfect example of this?? yes the underlying gay panic, and confusion nick is dealing with is THERE, but then itâs just a scene about having these little dumb teenage things matter?? at the end of the day itâs just teens having to deal with grown up things but still enjoying their teenage-nessÂ

people calling tao xu annoying are completely overlooking the fact that he is FIFTEEN YEARS OLD, and his life is shifting like sand beneath his feet. he watched charlie, one of his closest friends, get bullied by the very people charlie is now spending huge amounts of time with. he supported charlie through that, and doesnât know that nick and charlie are secretly dating. his best friend elle has moved schools, and he supported her through her bullying and misses her desperately (and he is slowly falling for her, and scared of THAT friendship changing too).
the moment he finds out about nick and charlie, he drops the antagonism, accepts nick, and apologises to charlie, acknowledging his actions made it hard for charlie to tell him about nick. he is a straight boy who is unapologetically supportive and defensive of his queer friends, throwing words AND fists if necessary. he is a fifteen year old who wants the best for his friends, who loves them deeply. tao xu is not annoying. he is a boy with a heart of gold absolutely overflowing for those around him.
there is nothing quite like the feeling of a fly bullet-shooting itself right into your auditory canal.Â
nor is there anything quite like the paranoia which follows.
