This is going to sound so dumb but I had no idea there were snakes with circular eyes instead of slits for pupils and now mitsuki's eyes make sense LOL. What does that mean as far as snakes go?

yes! mitsuki has eyes kind of like the japanese rat snake while oro's are obviously like the mamushi:

you might see some people say that "slit pupils = venomous" while "round pupils = nonvenomous" but this is a myth. coral snakes and some cobra breeds are highly venomous snakes that have round pupils, for example. using that as a way to judge whether a snake is venomous or not is definitely not advisable at all! never take advice like that to heart, eyes have nothing to do with venom.

and if i had to guess where on earth an assumption like that came from, it would probably be that old assumption that "slit pupils = evil = venomous" (and, conversely, "round pupils = innocent = nonvenomous"), which feels like assigning morality to an animal's natural traits. even if this can be true often, it doesn't mean that it's an essential rule that is true 100% of the time. the structure of the teeth would be your best bet in distinguishing venomous from nonvenomous (small hooked teeth vs. hollow fangs that can deposit venom... but, if you're close enough to examine a snake's teeth, you maybe shouldn't be taking that gamble unless you're handling them as a professional) and, again, there are still exceptions to this in the natural world

as far as what it means for them as snakes, it just means that they have different eyes, is all 🤷🏻

genetically, though, i guess i have to wonder where log and mitsuki got round pupils from but this is a fantasy world invented by masashi kishimoto so i think all elements of realism and accuracy when it comes to snake biology were kissed goodbye a long time ago
