Kent Parker turned 10 today!
Italpasta – “Our Pasta Love Affair”
Producing and AD-ing this project for my friend, director Marc André Debruyne, had it’s share of challenges, mostly brought on by January weather on Toronto’s Scarborough bluffs. We chose an amazing house perched on the edge of the bluffs facing Lake Ontario, but between our tech scout and the shoot day, some 30 inches of snow fell, creating six foot drifts around the house. What followed was some hard work by a rugged crew of PA’s and location folks, including Norm Laco, Sean Elliott, Dilay Taskaya, Shemar Charles and especially Michael Starr. I asked Mike how his back was from shovelling snow all day, and he replied, “Great….but I’m from Arizona. Just started working up here.” Welcome to Canada in January, Michael!
The other treat that I received with this project was meeting and working with Mr. Joe Vitale, the founder of Italpasta. He was so nice, genuinely appreciative of our efforts, and the star of the show! Hearing his voice brought me right back to my Nonna’s kitchen as a little boy, listening to the mixture of broken English and dialect Italian of the men arguing about Scopa in the dining room.
Marc André put together a great experience for Cundari and the Italpasta family. Hope we get another opportunity to work with this group!

Chris Boucher X Mary Brown’s Chicken – Ted Talk
I love working on comedy spots. These spots are funny because a. we had great talent behind and in front of the counter (Chris Boucher’s deadpan delivery is terrific, but I really love the behind the counter crew!). Behind the camera, we were lead by the energy of director Brian Faraldo and our producer/DOP/comedian Paul Steinberg.
Here’s a little outtake shot of what a normal person and an NBA-sized person look like standing next to one another.
I especially loved this project because I was reunited with art director Gus Franco. He’s a great guy, always has top-notch solutions and is fun to hang with on set!
I do enjoy collaborating with the folks from Rogers and the Raptors. They were gracious and easy to deal with on this project. And, Chris seems to like Mary Brown’s chicken, for real. He and his guy polished off a couple of loaded meals each!

Saputo – “Love”
I so enjoy working with Jesse Senko. He’s thoughtful, smart, quietly creative, and has a wonderful sense of humour and way about him. Each project has heart and soul, in large part because of his view of our world.
This was a simple concept: highlight some beautiful food, accentuated by a gentle love story. Jesse brought this together with a wonderful food styling team led by Bernadette Ammar, and fantastic art team led by Jenna Allain, working together to make Ian MacMillan’s photography shine.
This project had a little “Covid hiccup”, replacing some of our original players, but we got through it all, healthy and wiser, mostly because Kyle Welton never gives up.

CIBC Run For the Cure – “Never Stop”
Producer Kyle Welton hired me on to AD for the creatively agile director Jake Kovnat for this spot for CIBC’s Run For The Cure. We heard some inspiring stories from our brave actors; our clients and agency were tremendously invested in this project, knowledgeable and compassionate.
Working with an incredible camera and lighting team led by an awesome Peter Hadfield, we bounced around downtown Brampton for a few days to bring this idea to the screen!

McDonald’s “McHappy Day”
Another fun day with the inimitable Tom Feiler leading our team around the McDonald’s Toronto head office property to create this happy spot for McHappy Day!
Produced by my dear friend Amanda Field, with food styling by Noah Witenhoff, we spent a day outside a dated office building creating new, fresh settings for each scene. DP Evan Ciniello led a hard working crew with Mick Reynolds as gaffer and Lennon Shute as key grip, dealing with the wind coming through the Don Valley and a setting sun. Fantastic time with a great crew!

“Tommy” – RALPH – Music Video
Asked last minute to help this production by Gearshift, for the Toronto artist Ralph for her song “Tommy”, I jumped at the opportunity to work with the team that Jordan Barker put together. Director Renee Rodenkirchen had clear instructions: keep the beauty and poise, but rock the shots. Led by the great producer, Maddy Falle, and aided by fantastic DP Teo Weyman and his team, this video shoot was a combo of an awesome location, fabulous art team, and the wigs, the wigs, the wigs! Justin Rousseau and the entire beauty team did incredible work getting these wigs to stay on our performers’ heads and keep everyone looking natural, even when they couldn’t move an inch (in some cases).
And our dancers/performers were all game for all the wardrobe and makeup changes, staying patient and saving their energy for the camera.
Finally, the centre of the whole thing, Ralph, what a performer, so much energy, she kept the whole crew and cast inspired and energized all day!

OLG – “Winning Ticket”
This spot sent our crew across Southern Ontario for 3 days, from the top of a peak at Horseshoe Valley, to a farm field in Waterdown, a cool garage in Elora, finally landing on the Centre Island ferry for Day 3.
I do love working on OLG commercials. There are always fun concepts and challenges to work with, and the people are great to collaborate with.
For this project, I worked with a fantastic director/DOP named Shaunoh, a Haudenosaunee visual artist, collaborating with IQ Productions and Publicis. Shaunoh’s eye for landscape, machine and actors was evident throughout, backed up ably by some amazing drone work by operator Rob Antill.
My personal highlight was coordinating with the Island ferry captain, maneuvering a 100-ft ferry like a camera dolly, positioning ourselves for both drone shots of the ferry, and filming our cast on the ferry deck with the city in the background. Totally fun day and night!
My Favourite comment from this shoot goes to producer Marc Milliard, who said to me as we walked up to the top of Horseshoe, “Bet you regret wearing those culottes today, buddy.”

Hydroxycut – “Hangry Man”
Here is one of 8 spots created for Hydroxycut, a diet supplement, with Unified Content providing production services for Iovate creative director Joe DiBenedetto.
This two-day shoot had us filming for a day and a half in a house in Leaside, ending at a nearby Longo’s grocery store after hours.
I love working on comedy and Joe’s concepts were all about extreme situations with funny comedic beats. Timing is everything.
Our actors were fantastic sports, and everyone gave terrific performances. There was such a variation in performances that Joe’s edit team had a myriad of directions to take the concepts.
All in all, this was a fantastic production staged by Unified Content’s Michi Lepik-Stahl and Laurie Kerr-Jones, lead by Rory Halsall as line producer and the incredible Vimla Mangru as PM. Our cinematographer was Kevin Wong, who brought a spare, efficient approach to help make our days fast and easy to move about at the pace that was demanded.
But these days were really brought to life by director Joe DiBenedetto. I’ve not met many with as much energy and enthusiasm for his work on set. We can all learn to appreciate a little more when Joe is around.
Nice looking sandwich, Chiara Purdy!

Pinesol – “Sock”
Reuniting with Tom Feiler is awesome any time. This was our first chance to work together during Covid restrictions, and we found a great a house to spread out in. As usual, Tom (http://www.tomfeiler.com/) was a delight to work with. This is one of two fun spots that we created that fine September day, masked up, yet keeping things light and comedic.
Our buttoned-down PM Alan Kuipers kept the ship running with great producer support from the incomparable Amanda Field.
Here’s a picture from our scout that made it into the prepro book. Check out the acting of this “man with a sandwich”!
The added bonus of the day was working with the son of an old friend and former business partner at the end of his first year of on set work. Great to see a new generation taking the reins!

Foodland – “Harvest”
Director Melanie Chung brought a lovely concept to life in the fields of Chudleigh’s Apple Farm for Foodland in early September. We were blessed with a beautiful day, and DOP Stuart Cameron used the sun and framing to achieve this pretty spot. Kyle Welton was the producer on this project. He holds so many cards and brings an amazing, collaborative team together on every project.
The biggest plus for me: a reunion with an old friend and commercial collaborator, Johnny Gardhouse. Johnny and I did several commercials way back in the old film days. He is so fun to work with on set.
We had a blast!

Sportchek – “Find What Moves You”
Director Anton Josef and I were introduced over a beer in downtown Toronto to discuss a personal project of Anton’s. We immediately connected and, after a great work experience last summer (2019), I got an opportunity to work with him on a commercial project, for Sportchek.
Anton is a dream to work with, a fantastic leader and a gifted, exciting director. He communicates his vision to clients and crew in a clear and direct style. And, on this project, he collaborated with the equally visionary cinematographer Vinit Borrison. As usual, Vin brought new tech, including an RC car-cam, and a cool new 360 degree rig to play with for Sportchek. Check out the intro shot and the 360 stuff strung throughout. Anton and Vin at their best…. Exhilarating.

HSBC – Wunderman Thompson – HeydSaffer - “Minimum Balance”
This was my second full production job back from the Covid lockdown. We filmed in and around a house in the Bloor West Village area of Toronto, and had a myriad of communication, weather and neighbourhood noise issues to deal with on top of all the new spacing/masking restrictions.
However, this project was directed by an old friend (and great commercial director) Reilly Saso. Reilly and I have been making things together for years. Once we got the hang of keeping separate and communicating through masks, we flew through the day, getting great performances from our cast and high marks from crew and client as to how we ran this set.
Things are starting to get back to normal!!!

Spin Master – “All About Abby” – Web Series
I have worked on many Spin Master commercial productions over many, many years, and am a big fan of toy and kid-oriented content. I was pleased to work with Mowad Productions, John Nadalin and director/cinematographer Martin Wojtunik on this fun web series called “All About Abby”.
“All About Abby” follows the make-believe adventures of Janie, the biggest fan of Abby Hatcher (the heroine of a cartoon produced by Spin Master). This project was Janie’s first real acting experience, and she made the most of it! Janie brought energy and projection and so much enthusiasm to this project. The whole crew loved working with her.
For the first leg of this journey, we filmed the first 12 episodes pre-Covid, wrapping the exact day before the first Ontario lockdown. Martin created some fun and energetic episodes with tons of great ideas, all in the Spin Master studios. Our art director, Darryl Fraser, was integral to the whole production, working tirelessly from designing and dressing our sets to creating props on the fly as ideas struck.
Our wrap day was sad and uncertain, as we all faced the initial lockdown with no answers as to when we might all work again.
Then, a couple of months later, producer extraordinaire John Nadalin called me with a grand idea. What if we filmed a dozen more episodes with Janie, but from her house, filmed by her mom and dad? Could we pull something like that off with all this uncertainty? Well, we did it. We sent a bunch of wardrobe and props to Janie’s parents, had them quarantine the shipment in the garage for a couple of weeks, and then, over Zoom, we rehearsed and filmed with Janie and her family.
We never had any actual physical contact, but through several shoot days strung out over a few weeks in May and June, I directed another dozen “All About Abby” episodes, working with Janie’s Dad, Jay-ar, to frame, light and art direct the scenes that we filmed with Janie. We were not able to match the production quality of Martin’s episodes, but I think we did alright, given the circumstances. And I thoroughly enjoyed directing Janie in her home, while I was in my attic, trying to communicate over Zoom. Incredible that technology is allowing these things to happen!
