The Name Change: Part Deux
As fans we have travelled thousands of miles and spent thousands of pounds over the past years. Almost certainly, we have spent tens of thousands of pounds, collectively. We have volunteered our free time in the name of Whitehawk Football Club. We have swept the paths, cleared the leaves and painted the fences. We have been there for the highs and more importantly we’ve gone a long way to be positive and support behind the team and managers during the lows.
We have independently promoted the club through new fanzines, social media outlets, setting up stall at local events and actively promoting national campaigns such as the Football vs Homophobia. Nothing like this was happening when we first made our trip to the Enclosed Ground.
The fans have been our club’s personal marketing team, working for free in order to spread the word of Whitehawk Football Club. Whilst we do not own any part of the club, we have proved again and again that we have a great love and a vested interest in the future of Whitehawk FC.
This is why the latest developments in the name change saga have been a bitter pill to swallow for so many adoring supporters.
Whilst the name change is not a new proposal (it has been planned as far back as 2011 when Ned and John registered Brighton City Football Club as a Private Limited Company), we would have expected an amount of common decency towards those that support the club week in, week out.
At no point in the discussions of the name change to Brighton City FC have we been consulted, considered or spoken to about the ideas behind the idea.
By right, it’s Ned and John’s club. They are entitled to do whatever they wish with it, of course they are. However, as fans we have been completely ignored. Despite sticking up for our chairmen year after year when we receive torrents of abuse for the way our club is being run, we have been left in the cold.
The owners are in great danger of excluding one of the cornerstones on which this club has built itself in the last 6 years. Without us they’re going to need to start the fan growth all over again.
I understand the reasons behind the idea of the change and have commented on them in previous posts but the change is not for me. Especially not now that the owners have shown a disregard and relative lack of respect for the unpaid hard work that the supporters have put in to help the club achieve so much so quickly.
These are my opinions on why the name change has yet again left a sour taste in my mouth and I understand that each individual has their own view, some for and some against. I welcome all opinions and thoughts.

They go in the top corner, ideally followed by a Zizou roulette. File under things that have been left behind by time, but are still glorious. Great find Footysphere.

New York's Empire Supporters Club has changed a lot since its early years, when many members were socialist and anarchist activists, and when one of their main concerns was whether the stands would become a haven for fascists or far-right extremists.
After a World Cup light rail project forced them to relocate, residents continue to fight for fair compensation and housing.
