whitaker found veterinary medicine in one of the lists of programs heโs eligible for when he decided to go to college, taking a piece of home with him when he sets out to make something for himself
they never really had an in-house or oncall veterinarian in their farm, he just remembers his father and older brothers coming out of the pen covered in blood and afterbirth when itโs farrowing season for the pigs
he still uses the tote bag he got from freshman orientation and keeps a collection of pens, each with a different name of pharmaceutical companies
coming from a small town, his high school never really had a working microscope so he was glad that his lab partner taught him how to use one for their physiology lab after their professor assumed that they all learned it from high school
he vowed to always be prepared after that, reading textbooks and watching videos on unfamiliar equipments for exercises and did not use his small town background as an excuse to fall behind
after passing with flying colors in his anatomy class, his professor would sometimes ask him for help when it comes to the genitourinary portion of the class and eventually applied to be a student assistant for that department for extra money
everyone was relieved when he volunteered to put down the chicken before they could proceed with their necropsy class, boosting his social life (by that, it means people casually greet him in hallways now)
despite being pretty desensitized to everything, his least favorite subject would have to be parasitology (he remembers the time he found a bot fly on the newly-bought old horse he promised to take care of from the first time he joined his parents for an auction)
i mean it just made sense for an alternate universe whitaker to become a veterinarian
