Why I do it

Sometimes while I put on my uniform and my vest at some ungodly hour I ask myself, why would anyone do this? Why would anyone wake up at 0400 and give up their day standing in the cold without getting paid? But then I look down at my chest and see the badge and remember why. While this badge may only say explorer for now in a few years I will have a new one and instead of explorer it will say police officer.

This is not just a career choice. This is a way of life, and it is one I have sought out for years. This I give up my time, energy, blood, sweat, and yes even some tears for a program that is 100% volunteer and which overall gives me very little in return.

Some may not understand it but that is fine for I have thousands of brother and sister law enforcement explorers who do the same thing. Some may call us names or look down on us but in a few short years we will be the ones in the squad cars not ever knowing what the next call will be.
