Earth Guardians

There he is again the young climate activist rapper who’s name is quite challenging to pronounce: Xiuhtezcatl Martinez pronounced like (Shoe-Tez-Caht) I just recently saw him in a great 2 part documentary of Planet-e  “Wenn das Klima kippt” on the german channel ZDF. For all the german speakers I absolutely recommend watching that! Anyway that lead to me checking in with Xiuhtezcatl and his foundation @earthguardiankids because it seems like they have been continuously active in bringing awarenes on climate change since the last time I heard of his efforts a few years ago. And just currently he started a crowd funding on gofundme that I can only encourage everybody to donate to. Only 20 days to go. If the goal of 55.000$ is met it will be doubled by a private donor. Now with the current political climate those efforts are more important than ever in my oppinion!

Garden Update 2017

The garden grew piece by piece it was quickly noticed by my neighbors and more of them started hanging out in the garden themselves. I love that it brings together people who enjoy that space and even help out sometimes. I met neighbors from surrounding buildings who I’ve never seen before and befriended a women who loves to read there and will help me with the garden next year planting her own things and turning the rest of the unused space into something with me. :D

Also closer neighbors and friends came by and got their fair share of veggies and herbs. My friend Anna planted turnip cabbage, red cabbage and carrots that all where really tiny. They just didnt have enough space in the tub, since it was only filled 30cm deep with earth.

So my learnings for next year: more earth in the tub when putting in root vegetables and never underestimate the power of mint. They grow everywhere and are not to be stopped. I might have to rearrange everthing next year. oh my. This fall I also got A LOT of tulip onions and early blooming flowers to make the garden even pretty way earlier in the spring.

Garden Update 2017

This year I focused on salads since they are much easier to grow than the zucchinis and cucumbers. I was also given plants by family and friends from their gardens. I hardly had to buy any new seeds or plants. So this year I had: Pflücksalat, ruccola, strawberries, A rasperry bush, tomatoes, mangold, mediteranean salad, capuchin cress, mangold, lemon balm, parsley, chives, dill, sage, rosemary, koriander, basil, thymes and lavender. I still had half a bathtub left and offered it to my ux designer colleage and friend Anna.

Architecture that's built to heal

My Urban Garden

When I found 2 bathtubs to “give away” on ebay a friend and me moved quickly and put them in my garden space. After all I still needed so much more space for all the vegetables and herbs I had somehow now grown. I spend a lot of time on youtube learning about permaculture and gardening so I made sure my raised plant beds in the tub had a lot of organic material and a special built: wood, cut grass and plant waste and earth on top. And my garden exploded. I found more and more materials that people have just thrown out in the backyard like wood and chairs. And so my garden grew quickly. Zucchini and cucumber was very tricky though for different reasons. So i only harvested a few of those and many kinda dissolved before they grew big enough to harvest. Mangold exploded and tomatoes, herbs and beans grew well and easy. Next year I might focus more on salad.

Project Urban Garden

So I started looking around the neighborhood and observing the sun in my backyard for many months before I found a great sunny spot that noone seems to care for and use. It is overgrown with Brennessel though and a little hidden between trees and bushes. I found the spot for my garden. In the yard someone has left a shopping cart that has been unused for some time. So I grabbed it to turned it into my first little Herb Garden. I had a plant nursery at home, growing zucchinis / courgettes, tomatos, herbs and salad on my window sill. The Zucchini grew very large very quickly and it is time to put them outside in the earth soon. The easiest way for now was a big plastic container. But I need more space. So one day I started ripping out all the nettels to make space for a bigger raised flower bed. I now had huge zucchinis, cucumbers, salads and lavender and even beans and more herbs and salads. They all needed to go somewhere other than my window

Urban Garden Inspiration

Being an outspoken Flaneur I love to walk around neighborhoods exploring my own citys corners. One day strolling around Weißensee with a friend I came about this little urban garden created by design students of the Kunsthochschule Weißensee in collaboration with the new refugee shelter that has been created right opposite. This garden made out of recycled materials connects the university and the refugee home and creates a lovely inviting place for people to connect. I found it very inspiring. I also regularely have my lunch breaks at the Prinzessinnengarten in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Both places inspired me to create my own garden in my back yard. Let’s see what I can come up with

Concrete Jungle

Vases and deko objects I recently made out of concrete. This was the first time I played with this material and the next step is decorating them with color and maybe leaf gold to add something fancy to them. I already love how beautiful it looks with flowers on the table.
