Pixinote Picks for the Holidays
Maybe youâre done with your holiday gifting, or youâre scrambling for what to get your favorite Pixi beyond a little love in the mail. Whether youâve got photographers, word lovers, makers, or just your little brother on your list, hereâs the gifts those of us at Pixinote HQ gave and received and coveted and loved this year.
Sure Shots
For the photographers in your life, Sure Shot Andre Dos Santos (*Andredossantos) recommends the Fuji Instax cameras
âThey are basically the modern equivalent of Polaroid and the cameras usually come with some of the "film.â Not sure it's classic emulsion based, probably more digital but really that doesn't matter. Taking a photo and having it ASAP is the norm these days but it's still cool to have it in hand immediately. Maybe it's the camera nerd in me but it's just always been a cool concept. Also Fuji has really souped their Instax cameras and they have some cool features now like super wide lenses and such. I think it's a good gift for an older kid, to get them into photography or a photo enthusiast, photographer, amateur photographer, whatever, as well.â
As for me, *Danielle, Pixinoteâs social media manager, discovering all these awesome photographers and featuring them in Sure Shot profiles has been a gift itself. If youâre in the NYC area, consider booking a portrait session with Abbie White (*Abbie). More info here.
Or, you could go with some awesome photography books:
Francesca Woodman was the first young photographerâs work I loved.Â
If dog is indeed your co-pilot, or your recipientâs, The Dogist puts 1,000 dogs on your coffee table.
Sometimes, the best gifts are free, and I wonât think of photography the same way after this amazing essay on the power of the Selfie by Rachel Syme. Â âThought of you while reading thisâ and a link is like sending a modern mixtape.
Short and Sweet
Co-Founder *Daniel is a fan of the Field Notes Shelter Wood notebook. âWrite down those ideas. Sketch those views. Keep a list of Pixinote ideas!â
Iâll piggyback on Danielâs rec here and say Iâve loved many pens, but the Pilot Hi-Tec Maica Gel is my current favorite. Iâm partial to the blue black, but you could be a dear and get someone a whole set of them.
For the small or just playful people in your life, Oliver Jeffers writes and illustrates the kinds of childrenâs books that make you want to draw again. In his latest, Once Upon An Alphabet, he asks burning questions such as: How many elephants can you fit inside an envelope? (See the letter N for an answer).
We featured some of artist Lenka Claytonâs text-based art earlier this year. Some of those typewriter drawings are available for purchase here, or of course, the rare âMysterious Letters Artist Bookâ created with Michael Crowe. Guys, it includes magical dice.Â
Connection Matters
Co-Founder *Travis says âIâm going to go super on-personal-brand and recommend the Raspberry Pi 2 for the nerd in your life. It's a tiny but fully capable computer that can get mounted on a robot, wired into a home network for DIY home automation, or hacked into whatever wild project they can concoct.â
*Daniel had a whole list of playful ideas:
LittleBits â Gizmos and Gadgets. Super well-designed robot-creation kits to bring out the mechanical engineer in your kid (or yourself).
Buildopolis. Fort-building kits made from die cut cardboard and felt connector tabs. Think life-size legos that store back into a flat-pack box.
Dinosaur magnets. A fun way to hang those Pixinotes on the fridge. What could be better than powerful little dinosaur magnets? Plus, they're gold.
Teenage Engineering PO 10-Series pocket digital music devices. Link them up with friends for the ultimate Holiday beat-making hang.
Edit: Vinyl. Get daily vinyl offers via text, curated to help you build the ultimate collection.
Our developer Stephen *Sprinkle stays connected with his 1st Gen Android Moto 360 Smart Watch; the second generation one has just been released.Â
Happy gifting and receiving and mailing and thanking, Pixies. From those of us at Pixinote HQ may you have some meaningful connections this year and next.
