ok there are a lot of crazy, heteronormative choices that they made for the broadway adaptation of the great gatsby, but the only thing that PISSES ME OFF is the way they handle jay and nick meeting.

because bro is shameless. he's like "soldiers have to look out for each other" and immediately asking for the tea meetup. in the books, he essentially courts nick. he takes him in a plane and on a boat and takes him out to lunch and basically becomes his best (boy)friend before he dares mention the Montenegro medal and then he is so awkward and cute about it and in the musical he's like a manipulative comic book villain.

like i'm a natsby apologist both of them equally so i spend the whole musical like "nooo don't highlight their flawssss just make them kisss" but this scene did feel like a serious misrepresentation. it's so cold and book jay would never use war trauma against nick. fuck that shit.

and then this with him also running off with daisy after tea so they can play jordan and nick's lavender marriage as real so he just seems like more of a dick than he is.

I like everything else about Gatsby in that musical BESIDES this. I feel like the rest of it highlights his flaws really well, but he would NOT do that!!! The rest of it handles his awkwardness and his obsession with the ideal that is having Daisy in a way that I feel is true enough to his character, but that choice baffled me.

And also Nick and Jordan in that musical, they were cute, and I love them, but. why. And especially the tea thing. Stop it

wasn’t there like a whole point in the book that nick was never in love with jordan? i love the musical with all my heart but making it seem like jordan and nick were in love didn’t feel right

yeah. in the book Nick pretty much goes "well everyone else is doing it so might as well" and kisses her

I can forgive the musical for being an adaptation but I don't like how they pushed the Jordan and Nick romance, but I do think their characters in the musical are silly and fun when put together, which is something that could have been done without the romance element

theres plently of things to say about the tgg musical (bwaygatsby) but one thing they actually did get right is getting you to really believe nick and jay are friends. a lot of adaptations have them just. never interact or talk one on one. bwaygatsby gives us a good amount of scenes where they are actually. being friends.
