This is the blog for PJO Disability Week! It will run from the 12th to 18th of July, because July is disability pride month.
Inspired by @nicodiangeloappreciationweek, there will be voting for this event, in each medium, from the 1st of August to the 8th of August.
The winner the visual medium category can choose to make their art either the banner or the profile for the next year.
You can add your work, if it is on AO3, to the collection here. It is not mandatory.
Prompts are out!! Link here.
I will be reblogging posts with advice for writing disabled characters with the tag: disability writing advice
Rules
The event will run from the 12th to 18th of July, and posting will remain open until the 1st of August. All of these dates are in the EST time zone. Time zone converter here
Every fic must be centered around a disability of some sort. Yes, that includes intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, learning disabilities, etc. And yes, ADHD counts, but I would also implore you to expand beyond that.
Despite the name of this blog, any Riordanverse work is accepted here
You do not have to participate in every day, one day is enough
Any medium counts, whether that be fics, art, edits, mood boards, or anything else
There is no minimum requirement for any submission, but please do what you would consider a "finished" piece. All skill levels are welcome.
The only exception is NO GENERATIVE AI. Use of generative AI will result of permanent and immediate ban
Even still, there will be no witch hunts for AI here.
Your works can be NSFW or SFW, I don't care as long you tag/warn for it appropriately
All ships are allowed, no, we are not getting into morality bullshit here. Don't like, don't read.
No hate of any sort will be tolerated here. You will be immediately blocked and banned if you try and be intentionally cruel.
Please try and do some research if you're writing about a disability that you don't know much about.
Ableism will not be tolerated here, along with the suffering Olympics of who "has it worse"
If you are doing some variety of visual submission, please try and add an image description or alt text, either in text in the post or in the alt text, so that people using screen readers can enjoy your submission too. Tutorial here
To get your work counted, please tag this blog in your work, and use the tag pjo disability week
There is no minimum word count
If you have any questions or concerns, please send me an ask
hey there! Question about what can be submitted: Iâve got an almost finished one shot that isnât centered around a disabled character, but does happen have a disabled character with a small bit of discussing surrounding their disability- would that count, or would I need a fic strictly about their disability/ from their pov?
Hello!!
It doesn't need to be strictly centered around their disability, as long as there is a disabled character whose disability is at least brought up in passing, then it can definitely be submitted
Hello everyone! Just wanted to let you know that I've made the decision to extend posting for one more week, until the first of August, with voting going until the eighth.
I want to make sure everyone had the time to work on the fics that they wanted.
If you have any fics that you want to create or post, it's not too late! I would love to see some new faces submit for this event in addition to the already talented creators we've already seen.

Summary: Prince Nico sees a boy in need, and without a care to explain, darts to help him.
Princess Bianca is left to chase after him, and together they leave with less of an annoyance and more of a hopeful friendship.

Writing under the cut.
The town was bustling in the midday.
Bianca held Nicoâs hand, leading him along so he would have a grounding sensation to pull him through the streets.
Suddenly he tapped rapidly on her arm, trying to pull free.
âPrincess Bianca, please do not stop in the middle of the walkwayââ
âNICO!â
He was darting off, out of sight already.
Even with the trained guards encasing them, Bianca was the first to run afterâand quickest.
Not as fast as Nico though. Never as fast.
Searching through every face and every mop of curly hair, she was frantically searching. Half of the guards were keeping eyes on herâthe heirâand the other half searching for the younger prince, just as hectically.
Untilâthere he was!
She found him signing to a blond boy, onlookers staring.
She only caught part of their conversation.
ââI will translate for you.â Nico signed.
Nico flapped his hands twice, using broader gestures. He pointed to the people, then made a âtalkingâ gesture before gesturing into his own ears and through his hands to the other boyâmaybe a year older.
One lady was the first to angrily pipe up.
âTell that boy to give me back what he stole from me!â
Nicoâs eyes widened. He tugged at Willâs sleeve for attentionâsomething he always did, whether they were already paying attention or not. It was more like a precursor to speaking.
âDid you steal her things?â Nico pointed to the woman.
The deaf boy shook his head rapidly. âNo! No, I bought it.â
Nico pulled his sketchbook from his satchel. In uneven handwriting he wrote âHe said he bought it.â
Many seemed wiser than to raise their voices at the silent, flittering prince. But few did not as they raised their voices in argument.
Nico did something Bianca was familiar with. He took a step behind the taller blond boy and plugged his own ears. Did not ask them to stop, just distanced himself.
The blond made a âshushâ gesture and helped Nico cover his ears. Bianca stepped forward when she finally fought her way through.
âWhat is the matter here?â
Everyone fell silent.
The lady from before spoke up. âThat William boy stole my items I paid for.â
âWhere is your proof? What do you claim he stole?â
âIâve just left the jewelers, where I paid for my necklace. He took my package and left, ignoring me as I called to him! It took this entire crowd gathering to make him stop, he is a thief!â
Bianca looked to the boy, who met no oneâs eyes and everyoneâs lips. Something she knew well from her own experience with her brother, but for a different reason.
Anxiety was beading off of Will in waves of sweat and jittery signs, every one of his explanations either ignored or not understood.
âMaâam!â Someone yelled behind her. âMiss Rovinski! You left your parcel!â
She looked back, eyes wide and startled. âExcuse me?â
âYes, you left before I could hand it to youâis everything alright here?â
Nico was signing as rapidly as he could, uncoordinated fingers stumbling over themselves more than usual with his speed.
William was hugging the accused brown package close to his chest, tucking it under his arm when he needed to say something back.
âAre we done here?â Bianca asked, taking note of the guard that were accumulating and knowing they would sweep the siblings away any moment.
The lady nodded wordlessly, bowing slightly in a sort of apology. Bianca almost scoffed.
The bodyguards, now in formation, started herding them away. Nico flapped his arms and stomped his foot, tugging at his hair as he made a high pitched sound. He was still trying to talk to this Will boy, who Bianca saw sign his name in the corner of her eye.
âNicolĂł, we must go.â She urged. âPapa is waiting on us.â
Nico shook his head, and Will let him grab his shirt sleeve.
Will tapped Nicoâs cheek gently, making him look back. âI have to go, I will see you soon? At the library maybe?â
âPark.â Nico replied.
Will nodded. âI will see you at the park, then?â
Nico didnât let go of Willâs sleeve still. Both of the older teens were confused at his persistent refusal.
Bianca realized he wasnât just holding on, but was running his thumb tip along the lace-like stitch work. Will looked to where Bianca was.
Will made an âohâ sound, beginning to shrug off the jacket.
âBring it back at the park, okay?â
Nico nodded vigorously, putting the large thing on himself and letting the warmth soak in, even though it was hot outside.
The black haired boy waved with one hand, bouncing on his toes and lightly flapping the other until Bianca took it once more.
Bianca, even though theyâd certainly find trouble for running off and causing a ruckus, was grinning ear to ear uncontrollably.
It wasnât something she expected that day, butâŠ

âWow, traveling must be so hard for youâbeing like, partially deaf and stuff.â
Sure. Yeah. It was difficult sometimes, being deaf in one ear and with a hearing aid that distorted sound half the time.
But you know what is more difficult than that?
Nico di Angelo.
âOkay, I packed the BiPAPââ
âNico.â Will interrupted. âI see the tube right there on the nightstand.â
Nico looked over. âFuuuuck.â
âDid you ever decide on cane or crutches? Did you find the right pillows for the flight and make sure you had your snacks? Did you get momâs present packed?â
âWill!â Nico whined, falling back on the bed. âI wanna go to sleeeep.â
âYouâre the one that kept procrastinating packing until the night before.â He retorted.
He was making sure medications were sorted for the week in secure and clearly labeled containers. God forbid they had to have another whole ordeal with âunlabeled medicationâ in their bags.
Nico slid to the floor pitifully. âIâm gonna call Percy and Jason. Or Hazel. Or Reyna.â
âYou know that Hazel and Reyna would not be able to make it here in the nextââ Will looked at the alarm clock. â45 minutes before weâre supposed to go to bed?â
Nico sighed forlornly. âFine. Iâll put the stupid tube in the stupid bag cause I need to fucking breatheâŠâ
He suddenly froze.
âFuck.â
***
Their flight was 2:30, so they needed to arrive at 11:30, which meant they needed to get in the car at 11, which meant they needed to be getting dressed by 10:30, which meant they needed to shower at 9:30 and 10, which meant they needed to eat breakfast at 8:30âŠ
Will was waking up at 6, Nico at 7, because any earlier and he either wouldnât function the entire day or⊠well, his Zolpidem wouldnât let him function.
Everything was packed that he could, and it was around 8 that he finished. Nico had woken up (thankfully) (he could sleep like the dead) and done his part and was now cooking breakfast.
âMm, smells good.â Will stood behind Nico, stealing his crutches to lean on the counter in favor of holding up his weight himself.
Nico laughed as Will purposefully pushed on ticklish spots, giggling while he was still trying to flip the omelette.
âOh my gods, Will, youâre evil!â
Will moved one arm to be settled lower on Nicoâs waist, pulling him flush. âBut you loooove me!â
They finished breakfast in time for both to shower, but Nico had asked Will to help him wash his hair. Will didnât mind, but it told him what kind of day it would be.
With all of the mercy in the world, Nico no longer made it his life goal to push until he broke and only ask for help after he was shattered across the floor. Now he asked for help when the pressure was getting heavy and he didnât want to crack.
Still, though. Nico prided himself on being independent. Even though he was wisely conserving energy, Will was anxious seeing he didnât think he could do it himself without paying a bigger cost.
They both showered, packed the remaining toiletries, got Nicoâs cane folded and wheelchair packed, and were ready to leave on time.
âWhew. Okay.â Will settled into the drivers seat and adjusted his mirrors, ruffling his hair up when he caught a glimpse of it.
âTriple check,â He confirmed first, looking over to Nico. Nico huffed but knew it was probably wise, considering they both had ADHDâŠ
âNeck pillow?â
âYep.â Nico patted it at his side.
âLumbar?â
âYep.â
âTwo extra hoodies?â
âYep.â
âNoise cancelling headphones?â
âMhm.â He pulled them from his hoodie pocket.
âDid you grab your bag with the snacks?â
Nico looked out the window quickly, scratching his scalp. âUhhâŠâ
Will put the car back in park. âIâll be right back.â
They arrived at the airport about twenty minutes later than Will had wanted, because they had to turn around two more times for things they forgot. One was Nicoâs protein shake that he had every morning for the additional definitely-non-suspicious-vitamins-and-minerals-blended-into-it-that-would-not-be-good-to-sit-for-an-entire-two-weeks, and another because Will forgot his hearing aid extra batteries.
But they made it. And it was security time.
âHello, sir, is this who youâre traveling with today?â
âYes maâam.â Nico replied easily, letting her stall them at the metal detector.
âAre you able to stand briefly or do you need to stay seated?â
âI can stand,â Nico said, âBut I have a metal rod in my ankle that is probably gonna set off your thing.â
âOkay, no problem.â She grabbed the chair and wheeled it around, passing it to the person who would swab it. Will was already anxious and he hadnât even stepped through the scannerâhe was ready for the hustle-bustle of getting all of their things through scanners and not letting them disappear.
Nico went through first and Will was so focused on making sure he got through without tripping he didnât hear the man on his left asking for his backpack.
âOh, rightâsorry, Iâm deaf in my left ear.â Will explained quickly and the guy laughed, clapping him on the back friendly.
âAll good mate. I was wonderinâ why I was practically yellingâ and you werenât hearing me.â
Will went through just in time to help balance Nico off his bad leg, keep track of the BiPAP and make sure it didnât get placed directly on the X-ray trayâŠ
âNo, he canât take his shoes off easily, are you able to do an alternate method?â Will said to the lady as she asked Nico, who was trying to shuffle his headphones on.
Will couldnât blame him. It was loud. It was the week before Christmas, they were in the middle of the airport, and it was like every child in the vicinity decided now was a great time to cry. Willâs hearing aids didnât help.
The attendant came over at the same time. âHereâs your chair, sir.â

Jason was not having a very good day. He had gotten bitten by a bug in his sleep last night, a spider apparently according to Coach Hedge; not poisonous but irritating as hell, he could feel the bites rubbing against his shirt and it was driving him insane.
And speaking of his shirt, his awful wretched shirt, he had by accident grabbed the only shirt that didn't have the tag on the neck cut off, so not only was his shirt irritating the bug bites on his back he also had a tag on his neck driving him insane.
A part of him wished being skinned alive didn't hurt and wouldn't kill him because Gods what he wouldn't give to not have skin right now because he could feel all of his skin and he needed it off right now.
Leo, his dear beloved friend whom he loved very much and was not going to scream at or electrocute, would not stop tapping things with his utensils as they ate breakfast. It was already bad enough that there were the sounds of people eating breakfast and Leo was not helping.
Jason was not going to scream or pull his hair out or electrocute this boat. He's a Roman soldier. Roman soldiers are well behaved and Roman soldiers did not scream because they could feel shirt tags on the back of their neck and bug bites on their back.
He got up and simply just left the dining room, not even bothering to finish his breakfast or say anything, he needed to leave that room, he needed quiet.
He was zoned out for most of the walk to his room, trying to focus on anything but the fact that he could feel his skin and the bug bites and the tag on his neck.
The minute he was alone in his room he immediately took the shirt off and threw it at the wall. His whole body felt tense. He felt like he was hyperventilating, He might have been he wasn't sure, he felt like he couldn't breathe but was also breathing too much but also not breathing enough but also breathing too much.
Everything was too much and he needed to do something, he needed to do something to get this energy out,
everything was too much,
everything was too much,
everything was too much-
He didn't realize he was biting his arm until he felt his teeth start to sink deeper into his flesh and the bruise starting to form, he hadn't done that since he was a kid. Anytime this overwhelmed hit him before he would be able to train or attack things or just throw things but there wasn't anything to throw or attack or to train with like that on the Argo II. Nothing he could completely destroy without upsetting Leo, and potentially the others.
He carefully pried his mouth away from his own arm. There was a bruise already starting to form; red and ugly and angry, the indents of his own teeth deep in his arm, luckily he had managed to not break skin. Before, when he was little and used to do this used to do this more, he would just wear a long sleeve shirt after getting it bandaged up by the medics but the idea of putting on another shirt sounded like hell, the bug bites still itched but he was refusing to scratch at them, it seemed almost funny to him; he would bite his own arm till it bruised but he wouldn't scratch at bug bites. His logic seem to flawed even to himself but his brain still felt too overwhelmed to actually process anything.
He wanted to cry and curl up, he missed when he was small and could curl up on the older legionnaires. Being raised in the legion wasn't great, being branded at four definitely sucked, but he always had someone to turn to, someone to comfort him, he had been to legion's baby even when he was no longer the youngest kid.
But for the first time in this whole damn life that's been thrown at me / I think I might actually be happy
aint that a doozy of a title. lmao. I was going to trim it but⊠I love it so much I said screw it, go for it

Jason and Percy were helping stretch his hamstrings after a looong day. Will was gone getting pizza.
Nico was in the Poseidon cabinâs hangout room. In an armchair. Suffering.
âFuck you guys.â He buried his head in his arms.
Jason was finishing counting to fifteen and let go. Percy rubbed his hands together conspiratorially. Like a fucking fly.
âGuess what time is ittt.â
âWait. Itâs Friday. Fuck. No.â
Nico scooted back in horror. âPlease no.â
Percy cackled and began pulling the PT mat out. âItâs PUSHING TIME!â
Pushing time was Nicoâs least favorite time. Well. No. It was both his least and favorite.
Least because the point if it was chucking shit and Nicoâs face and hoping he caught it and trying to push him over to the floor.
But also, it was kind of fun. Everyone sat on the floor together and it was one of the only semi fun parts of PT.
Technically it was supposed to be balance this and core that, but really, who was counting?
(Will. Thatâs who was counting. Even when he joined in on the fun he was always subconsciously making sure nothing was abnormal)
(Nico tried. And failed when he had to get revenge with balled up socks.)
(Whoâs to say he didnât take his own socks off to throw at Percy? Shh.)
Will walked in the door to Nico crisscross on the floor with an entire basket of⊠things⊠by his side, the three friends basically playing competitive hot potato.
There were five ball-like-things being tossed at any given moment, and whoever was the one to not catch and toss it properly got pummeled with whatever was closest in reach. Fun times.
âPizzaaa!â Will called.
Percy jumped up and was yelling âNico, hurry up!â While he was transferring into his wheelchair.
âRemember when I said I took back chopping your balls off? I take that back too. Youâre being castrated with the pizza cutter.â
Percy yelped and darted to the kitchen space with Will, Jason beside him with a hand ready to help lift or move.
Heâd had to get on the couch and then the chair, but he was on wheels and ready to run⊠or, well, ride.
Percy had already eaten an entire slice when they made it in. That pig.
âGood PT?â Will raised a brow with a grin.
Nico threw his head back with a groan. âYou keep leaving me to suffer with imbeciles. Two rompicoglionis.â
Will snorted, knowing the Italian name. Percy and Jason were none the wiser.
âCome get your fuckass cheese pizza, dweeb.â
Percy liked to retaliate such things by using slang Nico didnât know either.
Nico sighed and rolled forward to steal a slice. He sat himself in his normal spot next to the stove, and looked around at everyone else.
Percy, like usual, was on the counter. Fully. Feet and all. He would not dare such thing in the Hades cabin.
Will was leaning on the counter with his own pizza sliceâon a plate, like a normal person.
Jason was on the floor with his leg stretched out, letting the joint chill.
None of them were without issues, Nico pondered in his typical dark-humored fashion. This thought came at the same time as Percy dropped his inhaler off the counter with a yelp.
It was quickly followed by Jasonâs âPERCY! This is the third time this week!"
***
âGOOO NICOOO!!â
âYou got this!â
âPOP THAT ASS!â
âCarefully, please. Still do. Will would probably like that.â
Nico was using his parallel bars for walking practice, Will holding the gait belt behind him.
Will joined in the fray. âHeâs right, I wouldnât mind that either.â He smirked.
Nico removed a precious balancing hand to swat Will where he could. âHorny bastard.â
Percy wolf whistled while Jason ewâd. Nico stuck his tongue out at them, but made it to the end of his second rep.
When he sat down to end, Percy hopped up and ruffled his hairâto which Jason shoved Percy aside for bullying and proceeded to do the exact same thing. Because it was fine when he did it.
Nico bit his wrist with a smirk that could be mistaken for Nemesisâ. Jason whined and hid behind Percy.
âOhh, you poor thing.â Percy exaggeratively patted his forearm like a mourning mother. Then pinched Nicoâs cheek with narrow avoidance of his own biting.
Nicoâs arms trembled from the strain, but that wasnât unusual. He was just happy he could keep being here.

âSo mature,â he teased, coming over to sit next to her on her bed, where she lay face down and under her blankets. She just whined.
âWant me to get Will?â He rubbed her back soothingly, making her melt into the bed.
ââM not hurt, âm just being a little bitch,â she explained and Chris tsked, he hated when she would say things like that, hated when she would insult herself because she was injured or in pain.
âIs one of the injuries acting up again?â
âif you start on that âsports injuries can cause chronic pain and technically capture the flag is a sportâ nonsense I will punt you out of this cabin injuries- hypothetical injuries be damned.â
âFine, fine.â he rolled his eyes and paused for a moment âif one of your injuries- ow!â he whined when she smacked his arm. âSorry, if one of your hypothetical injuries was acting up, what would you want me to do to help?â
âAmbrosia?â she glanced at him, trying to give puppy eyes.
âDoes Ambrosia actually help when you hurt like this?â
She looked away burying her face back in her pillows and mumbled â⊠no.â
âI bet we could get Silena to convince Beckendorf to let all of us watch something in his room and just hang out, if you want," he suggested while running one of his hands through her hair, which was incredibly unfair to her because how the hell was she meant to think enough to answer when he was doing that?
âJust me, you, Silena, anâ Beckendorf?â she asked, leaning into his touch.
âyeah, just us,â he promised.
Clarisse just whined âeverything hurts, I have no clue why.. wait.â She paused for a moment and lifted her head to look at the calendar and then immediately shoved her head back in her pillows and groaned. âNevermind I know why.â
âWhy?â
âI'm bleeding out.â
âYou're bleeding ou- oh, your periodâ he sighed, trying to will his heart rate to return to normal. âYou know you could phrase that in a way where it doesn't make it sound like you're dying.â
âTell that to my uterus âcause it seems to think Iâm fucking dying by the way it's makinâ me feel,â she grumbled.
What do we think, are allergies considered disabilities? i really wanna project my most recent unsolved medical mystery on Leo lol
I believe yes, depending on the allergy and how it affects someone, it can be a disability. In my opinion, what constitutes a disability is less the diagnosis, and more the impactm

But Every Ounce Of Me Resists And I Canât Describe It
Day 3 of @pjo-disability-week âs Event!
I hope yall count this in your disability week even if I think it is more mental illness than disability.
I canât lie yall. This one is⊠dark. Heed the warnings.
Words: 2,451
Rating: Mature (see warnings)
Prompts: Flare up
My take on it: Relapse
Summary: Nico di Angelo has a relapse. Will is there to help where he canâbut gods, does it hurt anyway.
WARNINGS: centers on an eating disorder relapse, specifically ANOREXIA. with specific numbers on weight loss and behaviors like purging and skipping meals. Additionally, brief mentions of attempted suicide and psychiatric hospitalization. Proceed with your own discretionÂ
Additionally, I wanted to add that this story is nearer to my real life experiences. I have not struggled with anorexia but I was close with someone who was and even though that was not my direct experience it still affected me heavily. That is why I personally decided not to soften areas of this fic. This is darker in the sense that it is a very heavy topic that needs to be TREATED as such. I donât want to sensationalize or glorify eating disorders, they are harmful to everyone involved. Enjoy reading if you decide to :)
This DOES HAVE A POSITIVE ENDING. Nico gets the help he needs.Â
Read the whole thing here.
Excerpt under the cut
âYeah bro, I really gotta lose some weight.â One said.
âSame.â Another guy said. âMy bulk got out of hand.â
âYo for real, look at thisââ The guy, at least 6â3, twisted to the side and pinched at some pieces of fat on his side.
Another guy laughed and said âLook!â As he was able to pinch and roll the skin on his arms.
Nico felt his face go green.
Fuck, He thought, turning to the mirror. His shirt was pulled off, in the middle of changing.
His ribs had become barely visible. His spine no longer protruded. His collarbones became only pronounced instead of sunken, same as his cheeks.
But now as he looked at himself, he thought;Â fat.
***
He begged himself not to do it. He ate a purposeful snack right after, peanut butter on crackers. Small but filling and calorie dense, like Will had suggested him for many months.
He almost went to get help. Almost said Will, itâs happening again. as he seriously contemplated skipping a meal.
But he didnât. He sat in silence and cut every corner he could.
It began with just⊠leaving a few bites on his plate.
Then stopping when he was still a bit hungry.
Then skipping snacks.
Then moving food on his plate more than eating it.
Then throwing it away to make it look like he ate.
Then excusing himself after meals to poke his throat until it was raw, and the only thing left in his stomach was acid.
Every bite, as he brought it to his mouth, made him sick.
It wasnât the food. It was what came after. Gaining weight.
Or maybe it wasnât even the weight after all. Maybe it was the choice. Itâs what he had been told at every therapist, every rehab group and call, everythingâŠ
Youâre ugly. Youâre unloveable. Youâre a pig. Youârefat.
âWill,â Nico padded into the infirmary, footsteps soft. He was in a hoodie despite July, and socks with gripped dots stuck to his feet because of every time heâd lost balance that day.
Will looked up from his writing quickly, like he was already on edge. âYes, Nico?â He set his paper aside expectantly.
Say it, he told himself, as his throat denied. He will even accept just âhelpâ.
But he shook his head and just walked forward, climbing into Willâs lap to cuddle. After minutes of silence, Will sighed and pressed a hand on his back, shifting forward to continue his work.
It was that same night that he stepped on a scale. His cabin did not own one, he had been bannedâhe stole it from the Hermes cabin.
I specifically stopped it here because there are specific weight numbers mentioned. Again, heed the warningsâthereâs more on ao3 tags and notes.

One would assume joining with the god of death to stop a centuries Old family bloodline curse that caused constant excruciating pain would mean no more constant excruciating pain and yet Walt Stone was learning the hard way that although he could exert himself more when it came to magic now that he was Anubis' host the consequences would still suck.

Fic snippet under the cut
(A/N this is the actual fic and everything should be linked properly this time (I am never editing Tumblr drafts on my phone ever again))
(fic for day 2 of @pjo-disability-week / dividers by @uzmacchiato )
One would assume joining with the god of death to stop a centuries Old family bloodline curse that caused constant excruciating pain would mean no more constant excruciating pain and yet Walt Stone was learning the hard way that although he could exert himself more when it came to magic now that he was Anubis' host the consequences would still suck.
Which got him here; curled up in bed, with all the lights off, in pain, hugging the stupid stuffed animal Sadie had gotten him at a carnival they went to, she had absolutely used magic to cheat the game but he didn't really mind that much, it was soft and when he was in pain it gave him something to squeeze.
He wanted to get up and be helpful, there were classes he was supposed to be attending but luckily the older kids were in significantly less strict and structured classes by the instructors from the first Nome (especially the well-behaving older kids) so he could get away with it. Though he was pretty sure Jaz had also told the teachers about his condition.
She was the only person who hadn't assumed it magically went away when he joined with Anubis. But then again she had been the only person who had seen how bad it was most of the time, she was the main healer at Brooklyn House and the only person he talked to about it before Sadie and Carter found out, of course she would know that it wouldnât magically disappear, she put her whole life into studying curses and magical medicine.
Anubis was attempting to comfort him, offering soft apologies and promises to not let Walt push himself so far in the future whispered in his mind but they all felt a bit meaningless, the god was supposed to fix the problem and he did for the most part, just not completely and that ânot completelyâ felt very apparent at the moment.
There was a knock at his door, he hoped it was Sadie, he knew it probably wouldn't be, or if it was she was either skipping class or there was a problem but still he hoped it was Sadie. âCome in,â He mumbled, lifting his head just a bit to look at the girl in the door.
I want to ask, because I do want to try and be as good as an ally to physically disabled people as I can and I'm a writer interested in exploring various disabilities in a book (I'm clinically diagnosed with mental disabilities and suspect I may have physical ones, but I'm not confident and very worried it could be something else, so it's mainly going to be mental disabilities I'm writing about as it's from personal experience), what are some common issues with physically disabled characters in media? Are there any tropes that physically abled people writing about disabled characters often fall into?
I have physically disabled friends in real life, but I do want to ask as many people as possible from as many different walks of life so I can be absolutely sure I don't fall into ableist tropes or misrepresent people! đ I hope you're having a good day, and I hope this doesn't come off as awkward lol. I'm still working on how my tone comes through in writing (ironic for an author, I know)
Sorry this has taken me a little bit to get to.
I also am working on my tone - and I'm also a writer lol
Immediately what comes to mind is having a physically disabled person need help with almost or basically everything and people pity the physically disabled person. Not just that, but it's written in a way where the audience is supposed to also pity them.
I don't have an issue with a physically disabled person needing help - I'm tired of the pity.
Then people go to the complete opposite extreme and, to show a physically disabled person being independent, the physically disabled person will never ask for or accept help.
Unless it's a story where they go from not accepting help to accepting help (or they're working on it) - if that's just how or who the disabled person is - I'm tired of that storytelling.
Showing different levels of mobility is so important.
Not every wheelchair user is paralyzed.
Some wheelchair users can stand.
Some wheelchair users can walk.
For specific tropes: there's the disabled villain - where someone becomes disabled and becomes a villain because of that. My issue isn't writing someone being angry (or even actually a villain) after becoming disabled. My issue is when the disabled villain is the only physically disabled person in the story.
I would ask for there to be another physically disabled person in the story who's not a villain to show the spectrum.
There's also stories where the physically disabled person is an actual jerk but is let off by other people and doesn't face consequences because people pity them.
Then there's stories where the physically disabled person (who's not a main character) is just there - is just physically disabled - to keep the (able-bodied or, more likely than not, nondisabled) main character's story going, to inspire the main character, there so the main character can choose to be a (quote unquote) "good" person.
There's stories where the physically disabled character wishes to be nondisabled and/or stories where disability as a whole is magically, completely eradicted.
I absolutely do not support any version of the second example (disability as a whole being eradicated).
There are people who wish they weren't disabled and they deserve to be represented. Just, again, I ask that there is a physically disabled person who does not want to be (quote unquote) "cured" in the story to show there is a spectrum.
I have an issue with stories that focus on how (quote unquote) "tragic" being disabled is.
There's nothing wrong with showing someone becoming disabled in an awful way.
But if you're going to have a disabled person feel their life is tragic, again, please have a physically disabled person who does not feel that way about their own life.
Stories where being physically disabled equals not having a healthy, loving romantic relationship.
Not everyone wants that. But, I ask, if the person doesn't want it only because of their disability (maybe because of trauma or something), please have a physically disabled person who does want that.
(But please don't go down the ableist route of no one is interested in them because of their disability so the physically disabled person tries to change themself for attention or whatever. If no one is interested, let the physically disabled person learn to love or accept themself as they are.)
Also, stories where being physically disabled equals not being able to have sex.
I don't know if there is any physical disability that makes it absolutely impossible to have sex.
If there is, just please add a physically disabled character who can and does.
And perhaps a physically disabled character who can and chooses not to.
You're not going to be able to represent every physically disabled person at once. Even two people with the same exact disability will have different experiences. That's why including multiple physically disabled people is important.
Show we're not all the same.
I'll reblog this with more if I think of them.
Other physically disabled folks: add your own suggestions!
