The Black Death was one of the most feared diseases in the 14th century. It was a type of plague that was spread via the bite of infected rat fleas. The black Death came from the swollen buboes (glands) in the victim’s neck, armpits, and inner thigh that turned black as they filled with blood. Victims often died within 12 hours of being bitten. This outbreak of the Black Death originally started in the 1200s in Central Asia, before sweeping Europe between 1348 and 1350. It killed up to half of the population in some countries. When the Black Death reached Gascony, France the whole villages was wiped out by 1347. Living during this epidemic, people who had a white crosses on their doors meant that the people in the house were infected with the plague, once that white cross was marked no one was allowed to leave the house.

Bubonic plague symptoms and signs include painful and enlarged or swollen lymph nodes (an enlarged lymph node due to plague is called a bubo), chills, headache, fever, and weakness. Septicemic plague (Black Death or black plague) symptoms and signs include fever, weakness, abdominal pain, chills, and shock. Tissue bleeding and death may cause the dying tissues to appear black. Pneumonic plague symptoms and signs include characteristic pneumonia symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, cough, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
