I'm having a lot of thoughts about Simon leaving the military (retiring for forced out for injury/age, you pick) and adopting dogs no one wants. The snarling growling ones that can't be pet, the ones that bark in fear when he moves his hand any higher than their heads.

The dogs that have to stay muzzled, that had red tags on their kennels and shelter staff kept asking if he was sure, does he know what he's getting into.

Simon sitting on the floor and quietly existing next to these scared, scarred animals, these dogs bred to fight and taught to be worse, slowly inching treats and strips of bacon over the floor. Keeping his voice calm and eyes down as they settle over time, learn he won't be a threat to them, that they're allowed to be safe here.

The way he connects with these dogs, sees the way they're pushed aside out of fear, the way they're left with nothing but their teeth to save themselves. The way he brings them to visit Price, their eyes bright and tails wagging, so he can see the journey Simon helped them take to be friendly again, to open up and receive the love and warmth they deserve.

Price already knows all this, because he was that for Simon, taking a scared snarling thing and bringing him back to being a person again, but he's always happy for a visit.
