🔻SDG5 : GENDER EQUALITY🔻 The commitment to advancing gender equality has brought about improvements in some areas, but the promise of a world in which every woman and girl enjoy full gender equality and all legal, social and economic barriers to their empowerment have been removed remains unfulfilled.The current pandemic is also hitting women and girls hard. Globally, women make up three quarters of medical doctors and nursing personnel. Women already spend three times as many hours as men on unpaid care work at home. The closure of school and day-care centres requires parents, women in particular, to care more for children and facilitate their learning at home. Reports from several countries suggest that domestic violence against women and children is also rising during the global lockdown. The economic slowdown and the disruption of food value chains caused by the pandemic are exacerbating hunger and food insecurity. The lingering impact of prolonged conflict and extreme weather conditions in some areas are the additional factors. Yet the pace of global poverty reduction has been decelerating and achieving zero poverty by 2030 seems to be impossible. The pandemic, natural calamities and disasters has pushed more and more people towards extreme poverty. 🔸 Sustainable Development Goals🔸 The member states of United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015. It provided a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. The SDGs are the urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. The SDGs also known as Global Goals 2030 are focused on ending poverty and other deprivations with the improvement in health and education, reducing inequality, and spur economic growth - all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests - saving our planet as a whole for future generations. The SDGs are built on decades of work by United Nations, member states, global leaders and activists in the form of Earth Summit (1992), MDGs (2000), World Summit on Sustainable Development (2002), etc. Unlike the MDGs, the SDGs prioritised sustainability over development - with an equitable distribution of responsibility towards the goals among developed and developing countries. The SDGs are 17 goals with 169 targets - integrated in a such a way that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and the development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability (as shown in slide 2). 🔸Millennium Development Goals🔸 The MDGs were formulated in September 2000 as the adaptation of United Nations Millennium Declaration by 191 member states of United Nations and 22 international organizations. These goals were the commitment towards the new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty, hunger, illiteracy, disease, discrimination against women and environmental degradation. The MDGs were the set of 8 time-bound goals with 21 targets and specific indicators to be achieved by the year 2015. This was the first ever platform for the world leaders to come together and measure the progress in terms of sustainable development. The MDGs were criticised for the lack of strong and analytical objectives. These goals were directed at developing countries and thus were not equitable in global context. The goals were more driven towards business-as-usual approach and the focus was shifted from development sustainability. The MDG had set the foundation of global partnerships towards sustainable development for the Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals by 2015.
