hi, i'm Will, they/them!
every week or so i send my mom "plant updates" that i, personally, think are hilarious and just last week i thought "this'd make a good side blog." thus, here we are
disclaimer: i have no idea what i'm doing. i've never studied plants, i didn't grow up around house plants, and i've recently, somehow, managed to kill a Mother of Thousands
stick around a bit!
Tonight on Will’s Plant Update:
- Sarah’s Lily (a new rescue plant) is now standing tall and proud! As predicted, she’s settled nicely over the past month and today fresh soil was added over the top and chop sticks added for extra support! Two new leaves are set to unroll soon!
- Dramatic Lily has received a hair cut; dead leaves have been cut off halfway down the stems so new ones can grow up from the shanks
- Triple Spider Plant has received some new top soil, but the ultimate verdict is she will need repotted asap. Luckily, Target has their face pots back out!
- Aloe Plant (after suffering the devastating loss of one limb bc someone accidentally shut it in a window (wow who would do such a thing)) has also received well needed top soil
- Finally, 2 years of dead leaves have been removed from the pot of Poinsetta 2020. Her soil can breathe easy now
Plant Update - Identified!
the weed in with my Aloe Plant? it's Creeping Charlie! it's a ground ivy that my parents have around their house which means that it's probably been sitting dormant in the soil for over a year
the absolute funniest part is that it popped up this summer around when roe v. wade was overturned and, according to google, Charlie here is an abortifacient. the universe really said "here are some options for you babe" and i just think that's great lmao
Plant Update - First Leaf!
Baby Pothos 1 has sprouted her first leaf since propagation and potting! so very glad it's working, i had a whole panic last week 'cause my brain couldn't figure out where the new leaves would come from and i was very worried
Meet the Plant - Spider Plants

Current Problems: cannot stay upright without Toothpicks
i got these spider plants as baby propagations from a plant swap. there were only two to begin with, yet somehow the pot on the right now has three whole plants in it. i have no clue how baby spider plants work or if that's physically possible, but here we are. the one on the left was just re-positioned in the pot because it was uprooting. we'll see if it'll pull through and grow big and tall like the other one

another plant i bought from the garden center while buying potting soil. don't worry there are no pets in my apartment, only us lowly humans. i have been told that peace lilies are so easy to take care of. WRONG. she is thirsty all the freaken time. like every hour. if i seriously didn't water her every other day you would think famine had hit my apartment. she'll weep at the slightest inconvenience. i had to repot her after less than a month so she could breath. she's my heaviest plant (mostly cause she's in the largest pot) and i honestly have no idea how i held her up for this photo. and i wouldn't have it any other way

look, i went to the garden center for potting soil and i didn't grab a cart so i wouldn't walk out of there with plants. see how well that worked out? honestly i stood in the isle and googled if laceleaf was easy to take care of. google said yes and i said bet. the amount of times i have to look up what kind of plant she is though? astronomical, i'll forget the second i hit post

this man was the smallest plant i'd ever seen in my entire life. seriously, two very small leaves and that was it. one of my coworkers brought in a couple baby hibiscus plants for me and one other person (i felt very special that day!). he grew steadily over the next year, but i was gone for a week thi summer and asked my roommate to water my plants. i don't know what she did but he SHOT UP. he grew a whole 'nother branch in that one (1) week. since then he's flowered and has two buds gearing up to open soon!

Mama Pothos had a baby! i've propagated my pothos before, but have given those propagations away. now though, i'm keeping one for myself! hopefully baby #1 here will vine more than her mom, i'd love to set her on top of my tall bookshelf one day. but for now, she must focus on being tiny

funeral plants, am i right y'all?? my grandma died in 2019 and this pothos was given to my mom at her funeral. which is such a wonderful idea, except for my mother is not a House Plant Person. when i got my own apartment, i took over her care! before you ask, i have no idea why she looks like a bush and hasn't vined much, she came that way. she is absolutely gorgeous and her propagations are always hits at plant swaps! (that is, the one plant swap i went to). speaking of, i recently planted her first baby that i'm keeping!!

okay, snake plants are easy right? but i swear they're not supposed to be THIS easy. i didn't water her for a month and a half. i recently repotted her and the dirt wasn't dirt so much as brown dust. she hasn't grown a millimeter. if i didn't have to remove a rotten leaf in the first month of owning her i'd think she was fake. she still might be! hopefully the soil change will do her good

Current Problems: recovering from the Great Cat Attack of 2021
my grandma gave me this cactus at some point in the late 2010s, but my dad quickly took over caring for it (teenage me should not have been let near plants). however, current me is much more capable and after my parent's cats decided it looked like a nice chew toy pre-chirstmas 2021, i took it in. it took some maneuvering to repot it in a position that wasn't lopsided and i was afraid it wouldn't take well to suddenly being propped up at an angle. this growing season she did really well though!! excited to watch her become a massive cactus

i bought this poinsettia in 2020 because i was moved from my dorm to a shitty apartment for winter break because housing and dining can't plan for shit (there are few people on this earth i hate, and the head of housing and dining is one of them). anywho, because i could barely take care of myself, she had a grand total of three leaves by march. but i tried my best to get my shit together and she THRIVED on a diet of stale water and gatorade. now i treat her better (and she might be my favorite, shhh)

look, i've had the aloe this plant is sharing a pot with for three years at this point and the thing popped up this summer. i have no clue how it got there or what it is, my phone won't identify it for some reason. whatever it is, i'm not getting rid of it just yet (and i may be putting off repotting the aloe until i can find out)

Aloe here is my oldest plant. I got her as a graduation present when she was itty bitty! i've been told that the aloe plant that birthed her is the size of a small tree and is too heavy to be moved, so she has big shoes to fill!
