EMERGENCY COMMISSIONS

Hi its me again my dad retired from his job but today my parents found out that for some reason he won't be getting his retirement pay until October. My parents financially support my younger brother and my disabled unemployed great uncle, as well as 2 cats and 2 dogs, and pay for their own house/utilities/car insurance etc etc. I have two jobs, but I need that money to pay for food, gas, and mystery in-the-air rent that the person who's house im staying in may-or-may-not ask for so i'm also broke (I currently have 8 USD in my checking account) I will draw pretty much anything SFW. Shitposts, icons, chibis, customs, sketches, whatever- nothing will be fully rendered, and I can't do mechs or complicated armor (that is to say, I will work within my ability). I can draw furries, and I will draw pretty much any fandom. These will be PWYW with a minimum of $5 USD, any lower won't get you actual art im sorry; turnaround may also be slow because two jobs and I am Also Disabled. Any tips or resources on how to make conlangs? I've been struggling on where to even start.

I've been using vulgarlang.com to generate a pile of randomized words with my own custom phonemes (sometimes I have it generate new word lists with the same phonemes a few times) and then I put it in a spreadsheet and come back to it when I need to come up with a new word. (Search for the word, and similar words, take the different generated word results, and then move stuff around and edit them for a better word)

Oh and by the way, vulgarlang existed before generative ai. It uses some other pre-ai technique for generating random words. It's a very very messy thing, it might give you some super long word for a short and simple English term, and then turn a complex word like "fraudulent" into a very short word. It's not great for making a finalized conlang, but it's a decent source of inspiration and a very helpful place to learn how phonemes and grammar rules work within a language.

I might also make up a word and then sort of retroactively create root words from it (came up with "takran" for a bird species, then broke it into Takuhé+Ennuran, bird+death, and then decided the grammar rules would use object/subject order so it becomes "bird of death")

I've got to look up some of my other resources again, i haven't worked on my conlangs in a while. I know there was a YouTube series and a lengthy pdf that I downloaded. I'm on my phone at the moment and it's just past midnight, so I will reblog this in the morning on my laptop, where I have my resources bookmarked

It also helps to give yourself a very simplified list of vocabulary words, starting only with words that will actually be useful to your project and then expanding.

If you already have character names in the culture you're making a language for, try to break up the names into potential root words and give those some meanings! It's a start, at least, and you certainly don't need fully formed conlangs to add a little linguistic flair to your fantasy worlds. Just a little sprinkle of conlang words where they happen to fit. We don't all need to be Tolkein or pull a Star Trek with the Klingon language XD

my advice, after finding a resource to give you some steps, a is to commit to a 'bad' conlang first. start making one that resembles your first language a lot, maybe a few features from a language you've learned. just make some stuff. gives you a rhythm and sense of what kind of decisions you're gonna be making

There's a website I use for word generation (again with custom phonemes) though I cannot for the life of me remember what it's called (and don't have access to my laptop rn, though I THINK @looseleafteeaves may have introduced it to me...?? If I remember correctly??)

I would also really recommend A Guide To Language Invention which is a book written by the guy who invented one of the languages in Game of Thrones - he goes through all the different aspects of what languages contain and I find as quite a good reference book/a jumping off point for my own personal research

I got tons of asks asking how I do the painting redraws so I thought I'd share the technique again!

• The program is Krita (all the brushes and texture are free and default)

1) Base colors can be set with any brush that works for you (personally I use blurring marker 1 on Ibis Paint) BUT all the painting is done with the 1st brush (2nd is for highlights and pop of more texture)

2) Do not overlay/multiple the texture. Just add it on the top layer lower the opacity to about 25% (17%-20% if the art has more darker colors) and keep it turned on and only paint under it (it makes the brush strokes look more blended so you can go crazy with the brush strokes). Do not paint over the texture layer

3) Save what you painted on one layer do not save it separately and in either painting program or your phone gallery play around with Contrast and Sharpening/Detail to make it all look very textured sharp and clean! If you want to get crazy with it some apps offer the "noise" filter to make the colors look more saturated

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

I just crossed with your posts about black hairstyles references and OMG I love your art style so fucking much. Im an European White person who likes to draw hairstyles with fun shapes a lot, so afros, braids etc are super fascinating to me because they can adapt so many different shapes.

However sometimes when I give different hairstyles to the same black character I have issues with traslating the braids's lenght to the afro's size and vice versa. I always end Up thinking that I made the braids way too long or the afro way too short. I don't know if you could give me some advice on this.

You can actually get away with the braid length depending on the characters hair type tbh! It can even be a cool little character trait you imply by their hair alone! Many things come into play with hair, one of those is something we call ‘shrinkage’! For some black people, I think for hair in the 4C range mainly, their hair can have heavy ‘shrinkage’. Meaning that their hair is SO curly/kinky, it’s shrinks back closer to their scalp after being combed out to its full length. Every see hair videos of a black person talking about their hair, and it’s looks like it’s barley neck length, but when they pull a strand out to stretch it out, it’s almost as long as their arm? That’s shrinkage! I’m saying all this to say, maybe if you have a character with an Afro, but you give them long braids, maybe they have heavy shrinkage in their hair! I think that’d be a cute little character thing to see in some characters fr😭 But a helpful tip I can give is, an Afro it’s really just our hair combed and puffed up. I’d say really the height/width of the Afro would be the best teller to how long the hair would be if it was braided. A small Afro would probably have neck length braids. Anything bigger might be up to/past the shoulder a bit. And the more exaggerated you get in size, the longer it would be!
