I finished designing the layout of the final scene. This will show where the girl’s adventures are really just her interaction with the drawings she has created! I wanted to make her room very colorful and vibrant to support her love for color and adventure.
This week I worked a lot on alternate background elements, specifically objects within the environment that can help to push the depth of my film. For example, this asteroid crosses slightly in front of the rocket ship, but there will could be blinking stars and moving planet rings. This allows for me to create the illusion of depth with my film!
This is a rough gif of the movement of the backgrounds behind the main animation. More elements will be added as I continue working. So far, I’m working with an enormous background image, and I don’t think I like how it’s turning out. That being said, it will definitely be something to play with!
I’ve almost finished the transformation sequence from the plane to the rocket! My next step is to adjust timing on what is already created and continue on with the rocket’s scene.
These scenes will be colored soon, and the characters will soon be added to the scenes! It’s exciting to see it come to life!
Just a brief timelapse video as I work on the transition between plane to rocket ship! My little character is going to space! I’m currently working on a tricky aspect of this animation, in which the spaceship will rotate to reveal the glass that will show my character inside, as well as a barrel roll with the plane! These animations are tricky since I need to place these 2Dimensional drawings into a 3Dimensional space, giving them the illusion of real volume. I’m loving the challenge so far! I’m enjoying animating this little plane! This is just one section of my main character’s plane ride introducing my film. I’m working on animating the plane first before adding on the background elements and the character inside the plane itself. I want to make sure the plane stays on model throughout some of the elements I’m creating. Having a step-by-step process also helps me to build up the scene as a whole!
I’m also really enjoying the scribbled crayon texture more than I thought I would! I’m usually much more of a perfectionist, where everything needs to stay within the lines, but with a more loose concept for the drawing and coloring, I feel it’s definitely letting me explore a different style!
I’ve decided for a more stylized approach to my animation. I wanted to try something that would challenge me! I’m so used to traditional digital styles with clean lineart and colors that stay within the line. Childhood drawings rarely stay within the lines, and are usually done with - crayons! My goal for this animation is to test myself with the different style than what I’m mostly comfortable with. This also helps to give it the more childlike whimsical feeling that I’d like to achieve!
These are just two of my backgrounds for my senior film. I’m going for a messier, childlike look. This is made possible by creating a photoshop brush that resembles a typical crayon, which I set to multiply, so it adds a bit of blending on its own. I’m not used to rougher art styles, so this is definitely a challenge. However, I’m really enjoying how it’s turning out!
I’m testing out some software with some rough animation! I’ve used AnimDessin before, but I’m now familiarizing myself to it!
Meet Cloud, the magical little pup that is featured in my senior film. Cloud is just one of two main characters. I’m very excited to bring this little guy to life!
I’ve started editing my storyboards into larger frames. These are very rough, but I’m just playing with my ideas! My story idea has also shifted slightly. I’ll be starting my animatic this week and hopefully starting to animate before the week is out! I’ve also been playing with color palettes and mood boards. I’m pretty set on what kind of coloration and overall aesthetic I’d like to achieve for my film.
I’ve been working on character concepts. So far, I’m aiming for a more cartoony aesthetic, and will have a few different animal characters. I’m still trying to finalize how I want them to look, but I’m enjoying testing different styles! I’m also working on refined storyboards and hope to start my animatic this weekend! I’m excited to start animating!
It was a tough decision, but I decided to change my idea for my film. I couldn’t figure out a way to tell the story I wanted to tell while it retained the immense personal meaning behind it. Unfortunately, it has become a side project. On a brighter note, I’ve decided to create a film based on the idea of losing your sense of wonder, imagination, creativity and happiness within ourselves and the world around us as we grow older. I’m excited to work on refined storyboards in the next few days to build up to my animatic! Senior Capstone, I’m ready for you!

I have started making storyboards! These storyboards are the first iteration, and are very rough. I’m not really happy with the way my story is coming about, so I may rework or change my idea altogether. Here’s hoping the next few days are more hopeful!
