Apart from all efforts concerning future waste management, recycling rates , non-virgin or alter¬native materials and the heated discussion whether corporations, citizens or governments have to solve the crisis, one of the main pressing challenges stays the ongoing pollution with plastics (and Styrofoam) and other floating waste in the rivers (as proved by Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research ). According to this and other studies the rivers are the main channels for transporting the global input of plastic into to the world’s oceans ) which endangers not only marine fauna and flora but also the very heart of the tourism industry in the Philippines. The PlasticPlug tackles only this pressing matter but tries to do that with maximum effect. It uses green renewable energy sources and inexpensive mechanical solutions combined with educational and motivational components.
