BSD Book Recs: Kokoro, Natsume Soseki

(My first book rec in collaboration with @akai-koutei and @anantagonist! Thanks for inviting me in this exciting book adventure haha. Arg I’m sorry this one became so long.)

The world of BSD has really opened up before me a whole new world of literature to explore and appreciate. It also reminded me why I loved reading in the first place. With each book, a new perspective opens up and a new aspect of culture comes to life. Kokoro by Natsume Soseki is one of those books that both fascinates and introduces me to the colorful spectrum of Japanese literature. It describes human relationships and the loneliness of an isolated heart in such an honest and beautiful way that hits me a little too close to home. so that’s why it’s gonna be another long rant lol

This (hopefully) spoiler-free introduction will also be mixed with some not so quick analysis and speculations on my part about how Natsume Soseki the author and Kokoro might have influenced Asagiri’s creative process of writing characters and relationships in BSD. If you have read this book or plan to read it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Some notes on the author’s works:

One of Japan’s most well-known and loved modern authors, Natsume Soseki’s stories present a deep exploration and contemplation of the self, the eventual abandonment of ego, and the effects of isolation and self-centeredness resulting in the impenetrable nature of the human psyche. Soseki didn’t believe that an artist’s job was to describe the world as is. Rather, he thought that the artist was meant to describe their own version of the world as reflected by the lens of their inner consciousness. Kokoro could be viewed as a struggle between pre-modern and modern Japan, with Sensei representing the Meiji era and the struggle between tradition and modernity. However, this seemingly external struggle could also be seen as Natsume Soseki’s excuse to describe the struggle in his own heart, a realization that the tallest walls stand not between cultures but between people.

Quick summary of Kokoro:

A young man meets an older male he affectionately refers to as Sensei, a mysterious and wise man whose character and isolated air fascinates the younger man immediately. The young man eagerly wants to befriend Sensei, while the latter carefully maintains his distance. As our narrator learns more and more about this mysterious, somehow sorrowful figure, it is clear that the weight of the shadow hanging over Sensei’s life is more severe than he had imagined.
