The rain was enough to make nearly anyone resentful, true, yet Achtung doubted that was the entire reasoning behind Kuja’s attitude this evening.  Not, of course, that he was about to say as much.

"Well, in any case, with the weather this foul, I expect we won’t be having an auction tonight, my lord.  At least there won’t be any nobles to trouble you in addition to the rain, hm?"

"None, indeed--" The better for me to finish my work here, no distractions, no need to run off, no-- "Still, lost money is always an inconvenience, one you should make up for. I expect you to finish any paperwork or stock organization tonight, seeing as you're not busy."

Achtung’s expression remained carefully neutral, but he struggled to remind himself that for all he blended perfectly into Treno’s odd social ladder, he was an outsider.  What outsider could ever hope to understand Treno?

It did hurt ever-so-slightly, however, coming from Kuja.

"It would appear you find all of humanity annoying, if I may be so bold as to say so."

'Humanity'. If only you knew, if only, if only, you fool--

"Perhaps." Kuja broke his thoughts and previous lack of emotion with a sneer. "Or rather, perhaps too much rain just makes me despise everything a bit more than usual."

"It is those same useless riches which keep this auction house running, my lord," Achtung reminded him, smiling faintly.  "They may not have plan nor purpose, but without them you would find me rather unable to aid your plans.”  Whatever those might be.  “I’m fond of Treno, myself.  Perhaps I speak from a certain hometown sentimentality, however.”

"Your fondness means nothing. And vital to my needs or not, no matter how much money they pour upon us, nobles will always be annoying."

Delivered as quickly and stoically as one could possibly imagine.

You’re in a sparkling mood this evening.  Achtung glanced at his employer, stepping away from the window.  “Come now.  We breed a higher pedigree of rat here in Treno, I should think.”

A scoff and sardonic grin followed Achtung's words. "What of the thieves? Those who do nothing but litter the streets with their being? The mindless, loathsome nobility that buries their wrongdoings in useless riches, with neither plan or purpose?"

Kuja runs a hand through his hair as he continues speaking. "They're of the same level, if you ask me. Just horrid animals of varying flock."

*casually gives Kuja a chunk of rose quartz*

His eyes light up with something akin to interest, knowledge, because this is something he knows and enjoys, and it’s absolutely lovely. The pink crystal glimmers as he turns it over and over in his delicate hands, oh, it’s so clear and smooth, the color is so flawless, what an excellent find, what a rare treat—

"Is this off of the new auction list?" Kuja asks suddenly, glistening eyes fixated on the stone he holds. "I’d like to keep it for myself. And I’ll hear no objections from you. Are we clear?"

"Quite honestly?" Kuja sighed in response to the man's quiet remark. "There's little difference between that drowned city and this one, now more than ever. They're both full of filthy rats and easily induce irritation."

☤ - self care/first aid habits, also this one

(( he pampers himself, obviously, but doesn’t totally worry about anything health-wise because genomes are just SO indestructible. when he does get hurt, he typically ignores it if it’s not in any vital spots and not bleeding a lot.

one thing he always does, however, is check for scars, or try to avoid being injured to the point of them in the first place. he kinda has a compulsive need to keep his skin as flawless as possible and scars would completely destroy that. ))

✮ - sleeping habits, because of reasons

(( upside down, sideways, almost falling out of bed, snoring, drooling, and out for seemingly days. he doesn’t sleep often, but when he does, it couldn’t be any farther from how a normal person would sleep. ))

he is asexual and no one will convince me otherwise

he has thanatophobia, not just a fear of death. it’s much more than that. thanks, garland.

he loves geology a lot, and his favorite mineral is chalcopyrite, aka, peacock ore

one of the easiest ways to get along with him is just listen to him ramble and agree, or talk about his interests.

speaking of which, he gets distracted very easily in casual conversations. he’s so focused and calculating a majority of the time and he just sorta zones out when it’s break time, or if he’s 100% done with everything and doesn’t care anymore

the thing kuja wants more than anything is for garland to admit how proud he is of him.

he doesn’t really… think normally, if that makes sense. he doesn’t have a conscience. if he thinks about something, he usually says it out loud a second later.

if garland ever physically injured kuja in any way, it’d absolutely break him. hell, for that matter, it’d break both of them, maybe.

he has really long fingers

once he figures out how to piss someone off, he will constantly do just that, typically in sneaky ways. casually insult someone only to have them realize it was an insult hours later.

The deepest corridors of Pandemonium led to dungeons and laboratories, long abandoned and left in disuse even when Garland had been young - Pandemonium’s origin was shrouded in mystery and time, any records of its creation long since lost.  It was in these shadowy passages that Garland had built his library: climate-controlled, of course, and capable of protecting texts more ancient than even he could imagine.  Many of them had been copied and re-copied as the ages passed, to better preserve Terra’s lost history.

It was his only true sanctuary from the enormous expanses of empty time his mission required.

Garland heard Kuja approaching long before the Genome entered the room - the loud tapping of his boots pierced the silence, and shortly after that, Garland heard the muttering.  The overseer sighed, setting aside the tome he was working on - a history of the mother continent - and waiting. 

"You were instructed to make regular reports," he said, as the ancient door slid open.  "I find your definition of regular to be disappointing, Kuja.”

An exaggerated sigh was the first of many melodramatic responses. "Terribly sorry," Kuja started, fully entering the labyrinthine chamber of books, "but you, of all people, should know I don't exactly have the best sense of time." 

Despite being absent from Terra for a considerable amount of time, it had been longer still since Kuja had set foot in Garland's precious safe haven--it was dull, quite obviously, and merely the sight of so much primeval writing made his head ache. So boring, so frustrating.

"Anyways, I haven't missed anything important, have I?" It was an attempt to keep the conversation away from the subject of defied instructions, and hopefully, it wasn't obvious, wasn't desperate. "No important script changes? No plot twists?"

You are a failure. Not only in this life, but the last.

Each word burned, hit like a collapsing fortress, hurt so much more than the last and Kuja was nearly shaking with anger—…No. Sadness? Fear? His mind was frantically searching for an emotion that wasn’t there, wasn’t there and those lies hurt so much that they were affecting every part of his thoughts.

"That’s not true," a voice poisoned with traces of confusion escaped gritted teeth. "That’s not true. I’ve done everything I’ve been asked and more, so much more, and yet you’d—” no, no, but he would—“dare call me a failure? …Ha! Really, how sick your sense of comedy is.”

…’Not only in this life, but the last.’ Why, why did that part cause so much more pain than the rest of those words, though?

Hey, so, why does Kuja talk to himself so often?

(( short answer? he doesn’t have a conscience. so there’s no filter between what’s in his head and what he’s actually saying.

what he’s thinking/talking about can start in one place and end up in another, and obviously, he’s constantly spouting nonsense to himself, very quietly, and he doesn’t even notice. if anybody mentions it, he’ll just go straight into a fit of “excuse you but that is a lie and you’re lying” 

think of it like an actor always practicing their lines without knowing they’re even talking. except in kuja’s case, he’s just not thinking about what he’s saying before he’s saying it. ))
