On this day in 1987, Ken Griffey Jr. was the No. 1 overall pick of the MLB Draft after being selected by the Seattle Mariners. He went on to become an AL MVP, 13x All-Star, 10x consecutive Gold Glove winner, 7x Silver Slugger, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 24th, 2016.

On June 1st, 1995, the Royals selected a young switch-hitting outfielder from Puerto Rico named Carlos Beltrán. Four years later, he was the American League Rookie of the Year. He will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, July 26th, 2026.
