“What alternative could you offer then, if you don’t mind me asking?” She turned and pinned the human with a long stare. She wasn’t upset with him, mind. Just- tired of being out here? Sometimes caution didn’t get results in a timely manner. Action did.
╳ ⁞⎜ Zach was hesitant to finish his thought when confronted by the dwarf Herald, but if he didn’t speak up then she might not find something important, particularly if she was going help Blackwall out or not. ❝ I just think it would be more efficient if we go this way. ❜ He pointed in the opposite direction she had been headed, but they needed to find that damn campsite.
ᵈᵒʳᶤᵃᶰ
░▒ TWENTY MINUTES he’d been going on about the imperium – twenty bloody minutes that the boy had not been listening too. this was their savior? a daft boy from – where? ❝ i was just saying how i’ve always been interested in blood magic, and how it may feel to wield as great a power as corypheus has. the venatori may just have something after all! ❞
╳ ⁞⎜ It took Zach a moment to realize that Dorian was being an asshole, but eventually it kicked him in the head, and it couldn’t stop the snark of his own from flying free.
❝ Don’t you know it’s not funny to joke about blood magic, Sparkler. You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t hate everything that either of those stood for, stop being a butt, just repeat that last bit please. I know the rest. ❜
ᶤᵃᶰᵈᵉʳ
“Inquisitor…” Ian leans around the open window, standing on the wrong side, among the twining ivies of the courtyard garden.
“I’m sorry, were you looking for me?”
╳ ⁞⎜ The sudden sound of someone’s voice nearly send Zach out of his skin. ❝ Holy shit! My heart, wow... I wasn’t ready for that, do you ever use doors? ❜ Heart still pounding in his chest, Zach tried to calm himself. ❝ Yeah, I found this last time we went adventuring, figured you would like a look at it. Solas scares me a little. ❜

“I’m having a hard time believing that you’d been in a SINGLE fight before the Conclave.”
Sparring — and she’s wrecking him. To be fair, she tends to wreck most people, seeing as she’s bested an ARCHDEMON. But still — this is pathetic! She spends so much time around warriors she forgets that not everyone had to fight tooth and nail to reach adulthood.
╳ ⁞⎜ Zach needed a moment to catch his breath, this was so much harder than it looked. With hands on his knees, he looked up at the Warden, groaning slightly when standing up fully. Holding the training weapon up, the supposed Herald looked more like a kid playing a game he clearly wasn’t versed in.
❝ I’ve been in fights before, just not... these kinds of fights. ❜ Schoolyard bullies are completely different than trained soldiers, or demons trying to eat you alive.
ᵈᵒʳᶤᵃᶰ
╳ ⁞⎜ They were all so scared of him, but all Zach could do was stare at the mage, who was even more handsome in person. Taller than he imagined too.
❝ Ah, what? Sorry I wasn’t listening. ❜
❝ This was just a routine game test… something went better than expected… but now everything is out of hand. ❜

( ❖ ) —┊ another sigh; this was the sound she made most, it was a noncommittal sound, one that could express a calm, anger, stress, and many more emotions. this sigh in particular was one of apology. so often she felt she shouldn’t speak, part of why she rarely bothered. ❝ apologies, ser. i – only mean, they are… disconnected from you. show them you are here, and just as concerned as they are. they fear, ser. they need to know they are not alone in this –❞ maybe that was just her.
╳ ⁞⎜ The fate of a world resting on a man that can’t even make public speeches, this really didn’t give anyone a solid belief that he could do it. Zach knew that, hell he knew that he might get them all killed, had nightmares about it, and sometimes he still smelled the burnt remains of those at the Conclave. Just thinking about everything made him sick.
❝ You don’t need to apologize, I know you’re just trying to help. I just... ❜
How ignorant everyone was to what it was like to be here, to know the suffering these people go through. The pressure the Herald was under. It had just been a game, something to do to pass the time. Now, there wasn’t anything funny about this.
Most of the time Zach was just scared and in pain.
The burning in his hand had been hard to take at first, but slowly he was getting more tolerant, building up some kind of immunity to it. However, when they went out to close rifts it would be like ripping it open anew.
❝ They’re not alone in fearing for the future, trust me. I don’t know what to say to them to make them feel better. I’m pretty sure I’ve let everyone down, since I’m nothing like what they expected. ❜ or needed.

( ❖ ) —┊ he was troubled. this much was obvious; it was the same face that she constantly wore, that of concern, or some turmoil. what his concerns were, that she knew not, but, he was the inquisitor after all, there was much to be worried about. she could barely handle the situation, and here he was, stuck in the middle of it, meant to lead them to victory. perhaps his oddities were not so odd, simply a way of concealing his doubts and inner anxiety? she could speculate on the tickings of someones mind for hours. when the solider came, rosalie glanced out, looking at her surroundings as she often did; when you didn’t do much speaking, you did quite a lot of watching. it was tense – people didn’t know what to believe, but they were trying. the inquisitor, being clearly a man lacking confidence, didn’t do much to instill faith into the troops. a suggestion: ❝ you should speak with them. the soldiers, your soldiers – ser. they seem… unsure.❞
╳ ⁞⎜ He wasn’t ready for a suggestion like that, not from the girl who was always so hard to get two words out of, but that didn’t make her point invalid.
❝ Me, speak with them... I’m not sure, the Commander or the Seeker are far better at speeches. I’m just, I’m not very good at speaking in front of people. ❜ There was a flashback to one of his presentations at a board meeting, one that didn’t go all that smoothly, which left him wondering about his job security. Now he really didn’t have to worry about that.
❝ I’d probably end up making them doubt me more, which really wouldn’t help anything at all. ❜
ʳᵒˢᵃˡᶤᵉ
( ❖ ) —┊ he wasn’t the most graceful of men, was he… this almost made rosalie a little calmer in dealing with the inquisitor. that, and he kept her feeling more welcome than most did. her brother wanted her gone, and most avoided her in fear of upsetting her, and thus, the commander. often times she wondered why she’d bothered to come seeking him out, he was busy with the inquisition, silly of her to think herself important. the thought made her brows furrow for but a moment, the expression fading as the near empty cup of water was held out to her. a soft shake of her head as response, she had barely nibbled at the ‘jerky’, and water would only spread the spice through her mouth.
╳ ⁞⎜ Zach was nothing but a klutz, and yet people expected him to win this war and save the world. Sure a few of them doubted him, especially with how strange he was, and he wasn’t sure how long they would want to follow him, a blip in their reality. He was so worried that more people would die, and it would be entirely his fault. There were no redos in this game.
With grim thoughts heavy on his mind, he watched her mannerisms, and took the cup back when she refused. Taking the last swig of his water, Zach set down the container and stuffed the jerky bag back into his satchel.
❝ Bread works to cool the burn as well... ❜ There was next to nothing he could think of to keep the conversation going. Thankfully and sadly a soldier approached and interrupted them, seemingly with an important message. After listening to the young warrior, Zach nodded and dismissed him. ❝ Thank you, please tell Cullen- I mean the Commander that I’m still going to meet him later for training. ❜
Looking back to Rosalie, he gave a rather awkward smile. ❝ So, did you have more questions that I might be able to answer you? ❜
ʳᵒˢᵃˡᶤᵉ
( ❖ ) —┊ each land had it’s own dialect, it’s own mannerisms, and quirks… what land had he come from to have such bizarre ways? rosalie would study the maps later, see what lands she knew little of. her fingers rolled along the hunk of meat – it wasn’t the same as the cured meats she was used to, this was dry and this, tough to eat and made her mouth burn – what spices had he used to make it so hot? she’d not bother to speak on it, she only nodded in response. she wanted to hand the meat back to him, but didn’t want to be rude, and instead took another tentative bite.
╳ ⁞⎜ This was almost painfully awkward, or it actually was, because his mouth was on fire, and on top of that Zach had made an ass of himself. I had always been an issue with him, talking to pretty girls. This particular girl happened to make him even more nervous, seeing as she was the Commander’s sister. The last thing he wanted to do was piss off Cullen while he was dealing with his addiction.
Clearing his throat after finishing the large piece in his mouth, Zach grabbed for his water and chugged most of it down, dribbling some of it as he did. Trying to wipe up that small mess, he did his best not to blush out of full on embarrassment.
Holding out what was left of his water to her, he tried not to make too much eye contact, mostly because he was feeling very out of place at this point. ❝ Do you need some of this? Seems this batch was pretty spicy, which I didn’t realize. ❜
ʳᵒˢᵃˡᶤᵉ
( ❖ ) —┊ he spoke unlike any she’d heard before. her attention was fully focused to him as he did so, leaving her curious about his words – jack links, what was that exactly? perhaps the man who’d mad them was named jack, how lovely. as the inquisitor went on to explain, rosalie gave the faintest of smiles, taking another small bite of the food that made her tongue ache.
❝ milk – as the baby animals do? i am sure you could find some from the kitchen, for the cheese. ❞
╳ ⁞⎜ ❝ Yes like baby animals... well, I mean not like a baby in how I would be drinking it. You know what, just forget I said anything about milk, because now it just makes me feel wrong in some kind of way. ❜
As if attempting to stop his rambling, Zach stuffed a piece of the jerky into his mouth. It was a good thing his backpack had been so damn close when shit hit the fan. Not only did he have a change of clothes, but he also had a few snacks, little pieces of home that he clung to just a little too tightly. Today was the day he would finish off the last of his normal food.
❨ i’ve got so many game verses that i want to add into zach’s story... likes fallout, silent hill, and many more. i’m just too blah to be able to figure it all out just yet. don’t shy away if you’re not in a dragon age setting, any awesome games (or movies possibly) are all good in my book. even if i’ve not played them! ❩
