How to be a woman Caitlin Moran
How to be a woman is my absolute favourite autobiography. I read it last year after watching Raised by Wolves, a TV show Moran wrote, and telling my cool aunt about it. Aunty Lisaâs from northern England and Moranâs from the midlands, it turns out sheâs a fan. I had never heard of this English journalist, author, and broadcaster but suddenly she became the coolest person I had ever heard of â I would hesitate to say, cooler than Lisa.
Moran was raised the eldest of eight children, a solid several of whom are sisters â in a council house without much of anything. She gets on well with her next-youngest sister Caz and the book begins with the two of them getting their first periods six months apart â but whatâs more exciting is what Caz and Cat* do next*. Moran began writing for the weekly Melody Maker at sixteen and at eighteen she presented the pop show Naked City. Her and Caz are soon taking MDMA at pretentious parties and having the best of times.
How to be a woman is a mix of autobiography and manifesto. Moran writes it hilariously and is so so hilarious. She tells stories from her past and explains aunt-like lessons about life and womanhood. She loves her drugs and her cigarettes and her family. She has well-thought-out opinions about stuff I wouldnât have even thought about - I really recommend you give this a read. She loves her op-shops and eccentric clothing and fervently believes LEOPARD PRINT IS A NEUTRAL!
*Caitlin isnât her real name â she read it in a book aged thirteen and strangely pronounces it âCat-linâ.
*What Katy did next â also a good gurlish read.
*In Lost in Translation, she presented us with the question, âIs it ever right to have sex with Bill Murray during a trip to Japan?â, to which anyone with any sense was able to answer, âNo â you must always have sex with Bill Murray when you are on a trip to Japan.â*
*That last note belonged to Moran.
