Hi! I’m no expert, but I’ve been making gifs for at least like four or five years, and over that time I’ve learned a lot, so I want to share that stuff :) Also, someone requested that I teach them how to gif. I hope this helps!

This tutorial will teach you how to create simple but quality gifs, like the ones in the gifset above! Those gifs are all from TV shows, but it should apply to giffing almost anything. I’ll be using KMPlayer and Photoshop.

You need:

KMPlayer (link below) 

Photoshop (I’m using CC 2017, but I think any version with the timeline should work) 

A video to gif (recommended source below) 

A sharpening action (recommendations below) 

A PSD / or to know how to color gifs (recommendations & tips below)

COMPLETERESOURCES — Less grainy and pixelated gifs

“ @jakegyllenhaals ; How to prevent your gifs from becoming super grainy even when you use a 1080p download. ”

This happens mostly on darker gifs (that have a sudden burst of color or any light source), but can be super annoying when you’re making any gif, only for it to come out super grainy and or have that weird pixelated gradient.

I’m using CS6 extended but it will work in all other versions

You’ll need basic knowledge of photoshop and using adjustment layers

how to make a gif in photoshop

a while back i made a semi-decent turorial on how to make a gif but since then i’ve begun doing things slightly differently so i thought i should make a more updated version in case anyone stumbles across the old one and is confused by it. making gifs is literally so easy (it’s the time you should be intimidated by) and there shouldn’t be anything that keeps anyone from making them! :)

step one: using realplayer (or whichever software works best for you) download your video (your video should be mp4, avi, mov, ect.- anything except flv, if your video is flv you should convert it to mp4). i’m using this cute video. 

step two: import your video into photoshop (file - import - video frames to layers) and use these arrows to select the part of the video you want to gif. check off “limit to every 2 frames.” (x)

step three: once you’ve loaded your frames, you can get right to prettying up your gif. resize it to your liking (mine is 245x135), add a psd/make one, sharpen it, apply filters, ect. [note: regular sharpen is fine but i’ve gotten used to smart sharpening, these are my settings]

step four: once you’ve prettied up your gif, add a time delay. everyone has different preferences, but i usually set mine at around 0.12-0.15. (x)

step four: save it (file - save for web & devices). make sure your gif is under 1mb. your settings don’t really matter as long as you feel they look good. these are mine.
