The scent of fresh baked bread and exhaust filled the morning air like an oily veil . Lara was careful to keep her head down , hair covered , and her hands in her pockets — trying to convey a sense of fatigue mirroring that of the early morning citizenry . A quick change of clothes in a public bathroom off the Rue de Valise had taken care of most of the blood splatter at least , and though haphazard , her getup shouldn’t draw any unwanted attention .

For a little while . News spread fast in a city like Paris . She’d be surprised if she wasn’t on the front cover of local newspapers already , and with the entire city on edge , her anonymity wasn’t exactly bound to last .

Lara was surprised to see the once deserted alleyway was chock - full with tourists . Her mind had been preoccupied for hours it seemed , mulling over the pictographs she’d seen in Aptera , and all the people she’d observed lining the beaches had suddenly migrated to the pubs and restaurants of Chania’s inner port . Some faces she recognized . Others seemed to blur into indistinct shapes .

❝ Pardon me . ❞ Pushing past an elderly couple outside what looked to be a cocktail bar , the tomb raider followed the flow of pedestrians further down the narrow street . Contingencies aside , she had to keep a low profile — most of her enemies still thought she was dead and gone , and she preferred to keep it that way . For now , at least .

Lara took a sharp right turn into a narrow back alley and refamiliarized herself with her map . There was a small excavation site - turned - tourist - attraction to her immediate right ; if Ioannis’ men were smart , they’d avoid it like the plague . It was much easier to head straight for the water . No one would look twice if they saw a handful of men climb into a fishing boat , and even if they did , she doubted it’d be a cause for alarm .

As things stood , she had to be a little less callous . Alone as she was , with a hunting knife strapped to her thigh and a bow peeking out of her duffel bag , people were more likely to question her motives . She even made an effort — a conscious one this time — to angle her hips as she passed another woman in the alley . ❝ Excuse me — thank you . ❞

STUDY : short .

Lara Amelia Henshingly Croft began service with the British Army in early 2010 , shortly after returning from a tumultuous dig in southern Tu.rkey . Her superiors , impressed with her ability to get positive results in otherwise unfavourable circumstances , overlooked multiple complaints about her rather unorthodox methods and generally aggressive behaviour — allowing her to power through the ranks without any formal penalties .

Lara was sent to Beirut in 2014 . After establishing an assumed identity under the name Lisa McMillan , she rendezvoused with the active unit in downtown Beirut ; where , after a minor disagreement , she assumed the role of acting commanding officer .

Though her skills where rarely questioned , Lara soon found she was a better soldier than she was a Major . Her unit , though rarely insubordinate , questioned her methods — considering her behaviour dangerous to the operation as a whole , and complaining she was pushing soldiers too far . Her abilities as a lone operative notwithstanding , this caused enough friction to destabilise the unit .

Following a rather unpleasant argument with Langley and the betrayal of her unit , Lara’s friend and second - in - command Mikhael Kavskov was captured and executed by a local criminal organisation . Realising her leadership skills were questionable at best , Lara took a leave of absence and stepped down as commanding officer . She was later honourably discharged .
