WHY. WHY WOULD YOU TELL ME.
[It was easy to miss at first, hurrying between hiding spaces before it could be noticed. But it soon became obvious that there was somebody following them. Trying to tuck himself out of sight, a small child, about 6 or 7, was trailing them, staring at them with these huge, awestruck eyes. His hiding kept him largely out of sight, but he was still pretty easy to spot, leading to a few strange glances from passers-by]
- @amethyst-shrieks
[The hero kept on walking, trying not to laugh and failing. A small chuckle escapes them as they glance at the kid over their shoulder. They seemed to think for a second, before having an idea. They wait until they were out of sight, passing through some shadows and walking through a small group of people, and when they should've reappeared, they were gone. They were there and then they weren't.]
[A moment passed. Without warning, the hero appeared walking next to the kid. Their head was tilted as they smiled down at him, playful.]
Hey! What are you up to, kid?
[He peered his head around as he tried to find them again, scanning through the crowd. His face dropped in disappointment as he realised he couldn't see them anymore. But when they suddenly appeared nearby, he nearly jumped out of his skin]
AH!!! [His hands shot infront of him, apparently ready to strike. He had some sort of paper rolled up in his hand which he quickly hid behind his back as he saw who it was, his face lighting up once more]
It's you!! Vanishing Act!! That's you!!! You did the thing!! You went away, but you didn't go away!! That was soooo cool!!!
[They basically cackled at the reaction, and their smile only grew from there. Clearly seeing an opportunity to showboat a little bit.]
I did do the thing! I can do it again, watch-
[They blipped out of existence again, and then reappeared on the other side of the child.]
Pretty cool, right?
[He spun around as they once again dissapeared and reappeared, giggling as he attempted to clap]
That's so cool!! It's super duper cool!! Cooler than the coolest thing ever!!!
[He continued to cheer before suddenly becoming quite focused on them, tilting his head as he spoke] Can you still see when you go invisible? Cause your eyes go invisible too, so can they still see? Or do you just have to guess where you're going? Sometimes I have to guess where I'm going, Mrs T says I get lost a lot, says I need to learn the city better. Do you get lost a lot?
[Their eyes widen slightly at the sudden barrage of questions, but their smile never failed. Theyd never say no to an opportunity to talk about themself. They placed a hand on their hip as they spoke and started to answer.]
I can see fine, it's basically still the same! Just gets a bit hazy sometimes. I mean, when I was younger I did sort of have to guess where I was going- turns out it's really easy to trip over your own feet when you can't- uh- see them. Took a while to figure that out.
And I don't get lost that often, I know this city like the back of my hand. [They flipped their hair over their shoulder. Or they tried at least they didn't have enough hair to really do so. They paused for a second, and then looked at the kid quizzically.]
You get lost a lot? Are you lost right now-?
[He nodded along, rocking on his heels as he listened. It seemed his eyes couldn't get much wider, yet they somehow did, glittering as he looked up at them]
Woahhh...so you never get lost!! [He seemed to pause at their question, glancing around, a glum look momentarily crossing his face before returning to a bright smile] Noooo! Cause I've been following you! And you're never lost! So neither am I!
[He seems in a hurry to move on from where he was though, skipping to his next question] Does it ever feel like you don't exist? Or like part of you doesn't? Cause you can't see it?
[Their smile faltered at that, shoulders even so slightly slackening. They looked a bit smaller, less of the shining hero plastered across marketing and screens, more like a human in a costume.]
I- I don't know. Sometimes. Sometimes I feel like I'm not even a person, just something far away, just watching the world go by.
[They seemingly remembered themself, and the smile was back.]
I mean- that's just if I stay cloaked for too long. Makes me go a bit loopy. [They chuckled, though there was something strained about it, like they were trying to convince themself it was enough.] Plus, I'm pretty sure the world knows I exist! Not like I can ever really disappear, I'm basically everywhere.
[His expression shifted slightly, from a look of wonder to one of confusion. He stilled as his eyes narrowed at them, an eyebrow raised]
But you are a person? You can't stop being a person? Can you?? Can that happen!! [His tone shifts from stating the obvious, to being extremely concerned that using his powers might cause him to to stop existing. Heel hitting against the floor] Everyone knows you, you're a hero!! A mega super cool hero!! The best hero!! If your powers can make you dissapear, actually go away, forever!! What could they do to- [He cuts himself off, trying not to let his panic show too much, that would be really embarrassing] to other people. What- that can't happen, can it??
Hey, no, you’re right, I'm not going to stop being a person, not anytime soon! I was just being silly, yknow?
[They didn't sound entirely convinced of what they were saying, just trying to comfort this random weird kid. You're a person, V. They gave a weak smile before moving on.]
I can technically make other people go invisible. Not for very long, and honestly it's annoying as he'll to do- but I can do that.
[They raised an eyebrow.] I'm guessing you don't want a demonstration of that one-?
[He didn't seem super calmed, nor did he seem interested in shifting the topic of conversation. He shifted his feet, shuffling closer to them, deep breaths, as he held a hand out. Pinky extended]
..promise. Promise you'll still be a person! That you won't fully forever dissapear!
[It didn't seem he was going to be budged on this, his hand shaking slightly due to how far out he was stretching his arm]
[They stared at the pinky, silent. You can't make that promise, hero. You can't be sure. You cant promise him anything. ]
[They swallowed thickly. They leant downwards and extended their pinkie, hooking it around the kid's.]
... promise. Cross my heart and hope to die, and all that over stuff. I'm sticking around.
[He narrowed his eyes at them again, judging the belief behind the promise. But suddenly he sprung back up, as though he'd never been upset in the first place. Smile splitting his face as he hopped back]
What are you doing out today???? I thought heroes only went outside to fight bad guys, Mrs T says they spend the rest of their time doing paperwork, or training little 'wannabes' like me!! But you don't look like you teach much? Do you help with the sidekick pro- uhh, programee- uh..class thing!? Do you have a sidekick? I'm training to be one some day!!! That's cool isn't it!!
[They chuckled at the sudden burst of energy, a bit overwhelmed but nodding along.]
Okay- jeez, lot of questions- I'm technically out avoiding doing paperwork, but don't tell anyone, okay? My manager'll kill me. [They sighed at the thought.] I don't help out with the sidekick thing, and I don't have a sidekick, and yeah, that sounds awesome! You got a cool code name?
[He giggled, nodding in a sort of silent pledge not to say anything. His energy dwindled as they asked about a name, shrugging as be kicked at the ground]
I didn't get to pick one- but they, uh Mrs T called me Earworm! She just calls me Worm for now but she says that'll be my name when I get out there!! But but she also said I still have to train for a few more years...so that's like foreverrr away
How long did you train for?
[They shrugged.] Like a year or two?
[Their brow furrowed as they looked at the kid, concerned.] That's- she really shouldn't be calling you Worm. That's a really shi- [Don't swear in front of a kid-] not a nice thing to do.
[He giggles again as they corrected themself, swaying his head] It's fine!! It's not the nicest thing, but she says it's prepa- prep- ..hm. It's getting me ready for when I become a hero! She says people say worse stuff when you're a hero!! And I like her saying that more than her not talking to me, that always means I messed up.
Hmmmmm, are people mean to you? I don't think they are. You're Vanishing Act!! Why would they be mean to you. But- is it true? That people say bad things to heroes?
Sure...
[They overdramatically sigh.] Just idiots- and my manager- who don't know what they're talking about. They just don't get it! I'm trying my best, I'm a good hero-!
Uhuh, idiots!!! They don't get it at all, don't matter!! Cause you're a great hero!!
[He seemed to realise something, glancing back at the ground as he slowly pulled the hand from behind his back that he'd been hiding since they appeared, holding tight to the rolled up paper]
You are a hero, a cool hero. And I saw you, and I wanted to ask you, if you would give me an aut..an agr- [He seemed unable to find the word, but he held out the roll of paper, a pen seemed to be tucked neatly inside of it. He likely wanted an autograph, it's a hard word to remember]
Oh, an autograph? Sure, hell yeah, I'd love to!
[They knelt down next to the kid and took the paper and pen. They scribbled something down, and handed it back to the kid. Vanishing Act was written with the V and the A larger than the other letters. Beside it they'd doodled their logo, and drawn a little smiley face.]
There you go- please don't sell it on ebay- [probably a joke?] Hope you like it!
[He took it back, looking over it as though it was worth more than life itself. A strange squeeze left him as he spun around, hopping from foot to foot, clutching it to his chest]
Thank you thank you thank you!!!! This is the coolest day ever!!!
[He slowly stops spinning, staring at the signature in his hands before looking back up at them with a level of joy that was unmatched by any he'd expressed before]
Thank you, it's been awesome getting to talk to you!!! Super awesome!!
[They chuckled at the reaction. It seemed a bit much but they didn't mind.]
Course, no problem! Hey, maybe when you're a hero you can pay me back and give me your autograph.
Hehe maybe!!! Oh!! Maybe we're gonna work together someday!!! But that would be ages awayyy
[He looks at his wrist, it was adorned with a watch, covered in dogs, he seemed upset at what he saw, but continued to smile as he gave a quick nod]
Mrs T's gonna want me back soon, she gets grumpy if I'm not on time.
That'd be awesome!
[They nodded, grimacing slightly.] Alright, I guess. It's been cool talking to you, Brainworm.
[He laughed, waving to them as he hurried off. Though he soon stopped in the middle of the street. Looked around. And came scurrying back]
Do you know which way the training centre is-? I can't remember where I came from- I got distracted.
Yeah I was gonna say you were going the wrong way- It's that way. [They said, gesturing behind them.] Just head down the street, take a left, you should be able to find it pretty easily.
[They glanced back towards him, an eyebrow raised.] ... do you want me to come with you? Make sure you don't get lost?
[He followed the gesture, nodding as he locked onto which way he had to go]
Right!! Down, left, boom!! Awesome!! I'll be okay! I've got to learn the streets somehow!! Thanks again!! Byeeee!!
[And off he ran, hurrying to make sure he didn't forget the directions]
Alright, good luck! See ya!

Are you lost right now-?
she Vanish on my Act till i Ing
