Connected, but alone?

As we expect more from technology, do we expect less from each other? Sherry Turkle studies how our devices and online personas are redefining human connection and communication — and asks us to think deeply about the new kinds of connection we want to have.

One interesting part of the talk: (paraphrase) “We have conversations with others to learn more deeply about ourselves.  With technology, we cannot do this.”  Maybe this is why St. John’s College appealed so heavily to me, and why I tried to be a luddite for as long as possible (I didn’t own a smart phone and barely texted until a year ago).
