In which an accident during battle training splits Todoroki Shouto into two: Roki and Todo. The quirk is temporary, lasting only 5-7 months and ending with the two merging back together. This does not stop them from falling in love with each other.

Ghost Shouto au (tw for this au: death, graphic violence, abuse)

In which Shouto dies, and comes back to haunt UA as a ghost. The nine-year-old ghost doesn't know what to do, what to feel, but hanging around 1-A is nice, so what is there to lose?

In which 1A are assigned a rather strange assignment: the chosen students are to produce an ARG (Alternate Reality Game), and the other students are to solve their puzzles and push the story to the best ending possible. The chosen students are Todoroki, Shinsou and Monoma. The ARG they create? A world where the three of them are villains, or in Hitoshi's case, appear to be. (Characters they play are referred to by their first name. Surnames are the characters themselves out of ARG)

In which Shouto's life is tied to the flame of a candle, if it goes out, so does he. He's tied to the candle from birth, being "summoned" by a supposed witch and blessed with both ice and fire, a product of the Rei and Enji's blood being used to make the wax of the candle.

taylor wip i NEVER finished

People love to harp on Taylor for shooting a baby that one time but the secret is she was entirely right to shoot that baby. That baby being kidnapped by a guy who's main hobby is "keeping people aware and trapped in horribly painful time loops until long after the sun goes kaput." Every time Purity shows up she takes the time to look directly into the camera and proclaim her love for That Baby Taylor Shot not just as a mother loving her child, but as a Nazi who viewed that baby as the most inherently perfect, pure thing in a horrible world infested with people who weren't white. And she tried to throw that baby out the damn window. Taylor shooting that baby is really just a Purity L she was tangentially involved in cause what do you mean the teenager you tried to blow up two years ago saves your baby better than you do. L. In terms of net suffering prevented, shooting the baby is like the most moral thing she does in the entire book. It's not even in the top twenty most questionable things Taylor did. It's the easiest trolley problem of all time but, sadly, "Taylor shoots a goddamn baby in the head" is really easy to dumb down for casual reference in a way that stuff like "Taylor played chicken with Triumph's life to make his dad agree to argue against the city's condemnation" just isn't. Anyways this is why the marketplace of ideas sucks.

Discourse:

A whole chain of discourse along the modern lines of antis/proship about shipping villains. Hero-only shippers posting callouts about someone for writing an Enemies-to-lovers villain redemption story. Undersiders fic writers going "look, they're better people than most of the heroes". S9 shippers getting hate from everyone.

Also writing RPF about your hometown capes vs writing about capes from a different city being a whole THING. "Look, it's usually fine, but just don't write about Bay capes unless you're from the Bay." "Oh, it's fine to do to New York but not to you?!" "No, you're just really bad at it."

Also age discourse with the added wrinkle of people guessing that the Wards sometimes lie about their ages but no one being able to agree in which direction.

Non-Discourse:

Powered Romance vs Civilian Identities Romance vs No Powers AU all being distinct genres with very different fanbases. Powered romance writers specifically often argue that it's not RPF because they're focused on the Cape, not the person. Other fans disagree.

Civilian names generally being puns based on the cape name. Usually one BNF uses a name early on and everyone else copies them because it's easier than coming up with a new one. Using a new name for a Cape with an established civilian name isn't a faux pas, exactly, but people usually avoid it without good reason.

Some people care a lot about powers being portrayed accurately and some people care a lot about powers being used in ways that further the story. Fans actually develop a tag/term for which a story is, but no one ever uses it.

Everyone who isn't an artist considers matching team costumes cringe(this is canon per Taylor when meeting the Travelers). Everyone who IS an artist has sent Accord at least one letter thanking him for forcing a team to wear better outfits.

People who are officially dating/married MOSTLY get shipped with their spouse, but there's always a contingent claiming any official relationship is just a smokescreen for whatever reason.

"[City] just got attacked by an Endbringer, everyone I don't like is dead, my faves from a different city have transferred in" is an extremely common premise.

People mostly write about the same cities. All heroes/villains are somewhat famous, but learning enough about a city's cape population to write it well is enough work that people mostly focus on the big names. The big names are NOT necessarily NYC/LA/Chicago. Fandom is at least a little hipster and would avoid the biggest cities being their sole focus. That said, Brockton Bay is only popular with the true nerds until after Leviathan, when the normies learn it exists.

Team-specific:

Every single team gets poly sex fic. Any team with a significant lean towards mostly men or mostly women, there's fic and art excluding or genderbending the outliers.

Brockton Bay Wards are notorious for that, with people finding all sorts of reasons to ignore Vista/Shadow Stalker/Flechette when writing their underage white boy poly pile.

Travelers showing up, having weird powered sex with your faves, and then leaving town with everyone either horny or heartbroken, is 95% of the Travelers tag.

Character-specific:

LOTS of trans!Skitter fics. Trans in either direction depending on writer. Accusations that this is just people wanting a white bad boy to ship with their fave are common. Lots of bondage fics involving spider silk.

Tattletale is a plot device rather than a character. EXCELLENT for getting your blorbos to admit their feelings for each other. "We were fighting the Undersiders and then...well, Tattletale distracted us and they got away *sheepish blush*" is a common trope in longer fics that want to keep the Undersiders around but not see the protagonists lose.

Before Tattletale was on the scene, Dragon was used for forcing similar confessions since Dragon knows everything.

Clockblocker: Tweets "Please don't ship me with my teammates. They're my friends and I've only fucked one of them, so being shipped with anyone else really makes me uncomfortable." (I don't have the original source for this joke.) Half the fans treat this as a serious request, the other half double down on including him since he opened the door.

Everyone assumed Skitter and Grue were like 20 early on because obviously the team leaders are going to be adults even if Regent/Bitch/Tattletale are younger. When Taylor was outed a LOT of people had to do some soul searching about their previous fics. Grue remained "probably 20+ in people's minds" even afterwards.

Legend/Alexandria/Eidolon are all basically unfuckable in people's minds and no one knows why. There's more fics about Endbringer sex than any of those three.

For why Legend, Alexandria and Eidolon are seen as unfuckable i think for Legend it would be because he has a husband, Eidolon spends so much time heroing he's not available for anything and for Alexandria I'm not 100% sure but maybe something to do with her thinker power? Like, she can figure you out in a second and that might make some people uncomfortable.

Also, how do you think fics about the travelers are seen after the whole echidna fiasco?

IIRC civilians have no clue what happened with Echidna, so presumably the fact that the Travelers disappeared right when the portal opened leads people to the conclusion "The Travelers are still out there, moving through new worlds instead of new cities". Or else "They all died when whatever the hell happened in Brockton Bay went down." Either way, the same basic Traveler fics still happen the ending is just more bittersweet.

Oh shit the portal. And lots of people probably don't know a lot of details about how it works, how it was opened, if more can be opened...

Suddenly there's so many shitty SI fics about getting Master powers and going to a different universe and forming a harem. These universes are always exactly identical to our own down to having alternate versions of people with the same names except no one except the SI has powers.

(SI Master Harem fics were always a thing, the portal just intensified them. They might actually be referred to as "Heartbreaker" fics in-universe)

Also now there's resurrection fic. Well, there was always some resurrection fic where a dead hero(often Hero) comes back to life and either criticizes current Cape Politics Issue X or makes out with a modern hero of the writer's choice(often both). But with the Portal, suddenly there's fic where any given Cape who was ever KIA or MIA, especially vs an Endbringer, was simply lost in an alternate dimension and now they can come home, make out with their significant other, and fix whatever your biggest complaint about their team/city is.

izuku's sparkler references the state of one for all inside him, in what all that's left are only its embers. shoto's on the other hand, is bright and glowing, representing how he and his power grew as he healed from his past. he thinks what could have been if things were different with his oldest brother, and so, the blue flame still glows in the name of his memory.

What are some things you believe worm does better and / or worse then other superhero stories and why?

This list is basically entirely going to be things that it does better, because I'm legitimately pressed to think of any way in which it's pointedly worse than the median superhero story (any specific representational issue or storytelling problem over which it rightfully catches heat, I can bury you in big-two comics which are significantly worse on that front, even if there are also examples that are better on those same fronts.)

Power System- Worm is the gold standard and likely will remain so. There have been other systems that attempt to tie powersets to the personality traits of the users, or attempt to use powersets as a characterization tool, but none that do so with the granularity and consistent quality of the parahumans setting. The powers themselves are all incredibly interesting on top of that, and moreover Worm is one of the few works that actually successfully integrates the answer to the question of where powers as a phenomenon come from into the climax of the story in a way that's thematically appropriate instead of an investment-killing escalation of stakes. When a show like Gen V has a professor bloviating about what it specifically mechanically means for a hemokinetic to be able to "control and perceive blood," that constitutes, for me, the most out-there esoteric piece of superhero media that most of the population will ever consume getting .05 percent of the way to how Worm handled that question.

Science Heroes/Reed Richards is Useless: Worm has such a well-thought-out approach to super-science and tech-based heroes- both to the question of why such figures don't upend the world as we know it, and to the matter of individual speciation of tech-based capes. It's actually fairly common for "tech as a superpower" to crop up in postmodern cape fiction such as Wild Cards or X-Men, but the idea of hyperspecialized gimmick-gadget supervillains like Mad Hatter or Mr. Freeze being the result of speciated technopathy is so perfect as to be infuriating, because how can you even improve on that?

Worldbuilding and Cape Politics- a significant chunk of this is just a byproduct of the story's immense length and lack of page-count restrictions, but Worm is simply much better at fleshing out out A.) the relevant power blocs in the story, B.) the logistical limits that those power blocs face, C.) how practical power ebbs and flows between the power blocs over the course of the story. Despite occasional self-admitted bouts of numbers-illiteracy on Wildbow's part, here are ways in which The Protectorate simply rings more true as an actual organization that could exist than Vought from The Boys or Team Tomorrow from Abberant or basically any other story that claims that there's one central superheroic authority. The Brockton Bay gang war is one of the best-rendered supervillain gang wars I've ever encountered, if not the best. And the runner up is from Astro City, a long-running comic by a single creative team with a setting bible that you could kill a guy with if you threw it.

Protagonist: Again, an emergent quality of the book's sheer length and the affordances of prose vs illustration in rendering Taylor's internal headspace, but she's in the running for superhero fiction POV character of all time. There's just so much to work with. So much that people are still catching on and unpacking the specifics of 14 years later. You can get a comparably dense and layered interpretation of Superman or Batman or Spider-Man if you amalgamate the contributions of all the different authors over their half-century-to-a-century of publication history. Maybe Bendis's Ultimate Spider-Man ran long enough and was dense enough for that iteration of Peter to end up as a similar object of analysis. But Taylor is absolutely lapping Mark Grayson from the 144-issue run of Invincible, for example.

Cast Gender Balance- One thing about Worm is that, for a work where addressing the historical gender inequities of the superhero genre isn't a foundational element of the story's brand, it's one of the best at putting it's money where it's mouth is on gender equity in the primary cast- fully rendered and agentic female characters all across the moral spectrum who actually do shit. I ran the numbers on this once and the cast doesn't have a totally equitable 50-50 split, but having Taylor and Lisa and Rachel and Aisha front and center, let alone secondary and tertiary characters like Dragon and Alexandria and Parian and Flechette and Doctor Mother and Contessa and Bonesaw, already puts it ahead of a ton of other stories in the genre, all without feeling like a self-aware correction. The adaptation of Invincible is going out of it's way to include more female characters (e.g. Shrinking Rae) and to provide more screen time and internality to those characters; this is super visible as a feminism-minded correction to anyone who's read the original comic, but numerically it's still batting well below Worm. The Boys has gone out of it's way to punch up the characterization and internality and character arcs of its female characters, and to add well-rendered female characters who didn't exist in the comic; again, a super visible correction to anyone who's read the comic and it's still, numerically, batting well below Worm. And, once again, the reason both of these bat well below Worm is that Worm's status as a gargantuan prose novel means that there's simply more room for incredibly-well-rendered female characters- I'm pretty sure we meet close to as many capes in the first eight arcs of Worm as the entire casting budget and screentime allowances of The Boys could accommodate over it's whole series run.

Fight Scenes are one area in which I'll entertain arguments of Worm as being worse than the average capething is, but this is tentative and subjective. The reality is that most capefic has the shortcut of being either illustrated or filmed, and the visual component automatically gives a leg-up when it comes to blocking out fights; Worm's fights, meanwhile, are thought by many to be bloated and meandering. However, I'm not one of the people who thinks that. I think Worm's fight scene's fucking rock, and that the prose medium coupled with Taylor's enhanced proprioception allows for really well-executed, easy-to-visualize fight sequences with delightfully rendered blow-by-blow and give-and-take. Throw into the analysis that a lot of comic book slugfests can be blocked with wildly varying levels of skill and creativity and visual clarity, and that a lot of filmed cape stuff is absolutely allergic to anything but jump-cuts and shakycam, and- once again, that there are no constraints on the number of participants that can be involved in a Worm battle due to someone having to film or draw the thing- I ultimately think that Worm's fight scenes can't honestly be assessed as falling anywhere below the middle of the pack for the genre as a whole. Your mileage may vary, of course. The recurring drumbeat here, of course, is that Worm's ahead by all these metrics because it's in a medium that allows for greater density of detail, and from there it laps every other prose capework I've ever read by virtue of the fact that it's just much much longer- more space for more characters, more asides, and for information and worldbuilding to be drip-fed to the reader rather than having to come in in big uncomfortable expodump chunks in order to give the audience what they need to keep things moving. Ultimately lot of what I think is uniquely good about Worm is just contingent on the fact that it's long, but also finite- a long march to a specific, satisfying narrative conclusion, rather than a superheroic mythology that keeps having additional twists and turns bolted onto the back half to keep the money rolling in.

One interesting thing about Worm is that unlike most superhero stuff it has no specific visual identity. The world looks like what it's described as in prose and the costumes I've seen interpreted as everything from classic silver-age skin-tight affairs to MCU stenciled Kevlar to Nu-52 overgreebled bodysuits to instagram streetwear reimaginings, and everything in between. To some extent all of those aesthetics are textual- lots of capes in this setting with lots of different aesthetic goals and levels of funding- but the fact remains that the MCU has a look, and the Snyderverse had a look, and the Gunnverse has a look, and Ultimate Marvel had a look and the Dark Age of comics had a look and the back half of post-continuity crisis had a look and Burton Batman and Batman 66 both had a look, and all of these were influenced by a combination of the print and costume design technology that were available and the aesthetics to which the public were receptive, and Worm isn't beholden to any of that. Earth Bet has as many looks as there have been readers. The costume design is where this pops up the most because people want to draw the costumes. That's where it's most salient. This was originally going to be about the world, though. The architecture. And the world in which all of this goes down can be more or less of a character depending on the production. Nolan Gotham isn't, to me, as much of a character as Burton Gotham, it's basically just Chicago. Gunnverse Metropolis is a bit more of a character, has more character than MCU New York has accreted after fifteen years. Jack Kirby and Geoff Darrow are both artists who render the world as a character in a way that I didn't really feel was the case for, say, a plurality of the New 52 excursions. Sometimes the city has a visual identity and sometimes it's just where the throwdowns are happening, it depends on the specific artistic priorities or lack thereof.

Anyway, Brockton Bay is a real kind of city in New England, that mix of new builds and old colonial/industrial stuff falling to ruin. There's another thing, though- that brief mention, I think in Arc 2 or 3, that build codes on important structures are several times more rigorous than in our world because masks keep getting thrown into them. So initially I thought it would be interesting for a visual representation of the Worm Universe to trend noticeably brutalist as a nod to this- Boston City Hall enacted at scale. The back half of the thought, though, was that it would be interesting if it were a pretty brutalism, an aesthetic patina layered over the omnipresent implication of half the buildings around you looking like they were built to take a hellfire missile. Cauldron-backed Art Deco and Googie revivalism, is where I'm going with this. That's the punchline here
