Author’s Note: I love the song “Summer Games” by Drake and I thought it would be cool to write something that surrounded certain lyrics from the song. Enjoy!
“Startin’ to see it in your eyes”
I walked back out to the kitchen and saw that she continued to buzz about on her phone as she sat on the island. She looked up and smiled as she noticed my presence. “Babe, do you want to go out tonight or just order in and watch a movie or something?” There was a pause before she spoke. “Umm maybe just stay in tonight? I don’t know why, but I’m pretty tired lately. I could benefit from some chill time with my baby.” I laughed and made my way around the island to squeeze her in my arms and kiss her softly. She kissed my neck before we pulled away fully. “Alright, well I can’t really argue with that, huh?” “Nope.” A few hours later, we were cuddled up on the sofa with the half eaten pizza in it’s box sprawled out on the coffee table. I suddenly felt her body trembling against mine and furrowed my brows. “Are you okay?” “What? Umm…yeah, why?” “It just feels like you’re shaking, that’s all.” “Oh, sorry…” “You’re fine, babe. Are you just cold?” “I must be, and I’m just not noticing it.” Even though she was already wearing a long sleeve shirt, I figured it was thin and rapidly started rubbing my palms against her arms. She chuckled and pressed herself closer to me.
“Are you sure that you don’t want to just stay tonight?” “Yeah, I’m sure. I’ve got some studying to do tomorrow morning anyway.” I reached for her hips and squeezed lightly as I pulled her pelvis towards mine. “I’m proud of you, you know?” She looked at me coyly, but didn’t smile. She nodded her head sheepishly and remained silent. “Hey seriously, are you sure you’re okay?” Her head hung low as I tugged on her chin gently so that she would look at me. “You seem a bit sad. Is there something going on?” She stood still and was quiet for a short time before saying, “No, I’m fine I’m just tired. It’s been a long week.” I nodded in understanding and reminded her that I was always there if she needed me. I walked her to her car in the driveway, holding her hand. Once at the car door, she turned and wrapped her arms around my middle as one of my hands held onto her waist as the other cupped her bottom. “I love you,” I uttered as she soon said the same. “Let me know when you get home okay?” Her head sank onto my chest as she said, “I will.” I cupped her face and planted a few more kisses on her soft lips. Opening the car door, she slipped in the driver’s seat and I closed the door smiling at her. She waved and slowly backed out of the driveway. I stood there until her car was out of sight and thought to myself that even though she said she was fine, that something seemed to be on her mind.
“How can you be angry on a night in July?”
Everything was still going great with Y/N, but the more times I saw her, the more the growing concern of some invisible problem kept rearing it’s head. I decided not to push or pry because I wanted her to come to me on her own.
She sat on the couch in my living room reading a chapter from one of her books for a literature class. I tried to get some things done around the house as she did so. A few minutes passed when I was fixing a squeaky bolt on the garage door.
She came into the garage without me hearing her until she said my name. “Adrien...can I talk to you?” Looking at her, I nodded my head in agreement. There was a pause of her just looking at me deeply in my eyes before she spoke up. “There’s something I need tell you.” “Okay...” I said as I grasped her closest hand, walked over to a nearby chair, sat down, and positioned her so that she was sitting on one of my thighs, but still turned facing me. “Um well I have some news and I’m not sure how you’ll react.” “Alright, go ahead.” “One of my professors takes a trip to Brazil every other year to help train some of his top students in the anthropology field.” “Cool...” She smiled faintly as I remarked. “Well, it turns out that I’ve had the highest GPA out of all of his courses and he’s invited me to go to Brazil with him and six other students.” I instantly lit up and smiled brightly. “Y/N, that’s amazing, congratulations, baby.” She placed her hand on my cheek. “I mean I know you were doing well with your major courses, but wow, incredible.” She moved in and pecked my lips. “There’s more actually...he invited me to stay for the upcoming summer.” “Ohhhh.” “What do you think?”
I felt so caught off guard and stumbled in phrasing my next response. “Well, I mean that’s a great opportunity, babe, but if it meant you being away for that chunk of time why didn’t you mention it sooner, so I could at least prep myself leading up to when you would leave? To be honest, this is all catching me out of nowhere.” Her facial expression turned to a sort of grimace as I said this. “So are you not happy for me?” “Y/N, I didn’t say that at all. I’m just a bit shocked at how long you’ll have to be gone because I know a chance like this is not one you would pass up nor would I let you pass on it.” She looked down in her lap and just listened to what I had to say. “You are going to say yes to your professor right?” “I planned on it until now.” “What do you mean?” “I just thought your reaction would be more upbeat and this is why I kept putting it off to tell you.” “I don’t want you to feel like you have to hold back on sharing things with me because of a hypothetical reaction I would give. You can talk to me, Y/N. Also, you shouldn’t feel like that because I’m pumped for you, it’s just I would miss you during that time and I don’t know if I’ll even get to visit you because of trainings and the following pre-season.” She stood up from my thigh and began to pace in front of me. “Do you think it would hurt us? I mean like our relationship if I go?” She stopped pacing and looked me dead in the eye. “No…you and I are pretty strong no matter if we’re near or far.” “Then what’s your issue Adrien?” I began shaking my head in disbelief. “What?” I asked completely puzzled and stood up from the chair to be more at eye level with her. “Why are you saying that? I don’t have an issue. I simply just told you how I realistically felt about you being gone for that time.” “Well, I’m sorry that the trip is that long and that your soccer can’t be left alone.” She had her arms folded now and looked back at me in utter frustration. Getting close enough to her to place my hand on her forearm, I asked, “Are you okay? Is there something else that you need to talk to me about? I feel like you’re blowing this out more than it needs to be. Like I said, I’m happy and proud of you and if you want to go, then go right ahead. I want you to get the experience and see things down there for yourself.” “I feel like you’re kind of making this about yourself.” “Wait…wha—?” “Adrien just stop, I’m gonna go. Text you later.” Before I could even try to reach for her arm and stop her, she rushed passed me and headed to her car. “Wait! Don’t leave like this!” She hollered back, “You’re getting on my nerves and I would rather talk about it another time!” I stared with frustration as she continued to walk farther and farther away. ‘I didn’t even say anything that would warrant this reaction,’ I thought to myself. I couldn’t believe or understand why she was acting this way.
The next time we saw each other, I couldn’t help but still feel frustrated with her because I couldn’t believe that she chose to handle that conversation the way she did. She sat across from me at my kitchen table. “Listen Y/N, I really don’t understand what your problem was when you told me the news. I mean, I was excited for you and wanted you to go, but I just expressed some realistic things with you and I felt like you blew it out of proportion with me. I’m not used to seeing you act that way, but when you do, it frustrates and upsets me.” She listened to me intently as I said this with her fingers intertwined on the table. She took in a deep breath. “You’re right, Adrien...I shouldn’t have handled it that way and I felt very bad about it afterwards because you were just trying to support me and consider the reality of the time we would not be able to be around each other. I’m sorry, babe.” I exhaled once she said this and looked at her in silence. I studied her features as if trying to understand her more. “Thank you for apologizing. I guess I’m just still trying to fully understand why you reacted in that way.” I reached for one of her hands and clasped it into mine. “Why were you really afraid to tell me? The way that you seemed even before you told me was just different than how you usually are and I could tell that you were possibly holding back on telling me something. Do you feel like you can’t come to me with certain things?” Her eyes looked into mine with a flash of uncertainty and possibly sadness. “I just…no I know that I can come to you, but sometimes I wonder if you and I will go to highest level that a relationship can go.” She paused before continuing. “A, I really love you and we’ve been together for two years now. The more time passes, the more and more I see a long future with you.” “So, are you saying a long future like in terms of marriage one day?” She looked away quickly as if she was becoming shy. “Yes, at least I think so.” I couldn’t help, but blush a bit and smile. “Y/N, if I’m being 100% honest with you, then I would say that I can see that for our future as well.” She grinned happily and squeezed my hand. “I know we’re still young, but I just wanted to let you know that I can envision it one day and being with you forever. This has been one of the happiest and healthiest relationships that I’ve been in, Adrien, and I know I don’t want to lose you. I let go of her hand and walked around the table, crouching down next to her chair. I caressed her cheek in my palm and ensured that she was looking at me. “Baby, you will never lose me just like that, trip to Brazil or not, I will always be here for you.”
“Summer just started and we’re already done”
Training was done for the day and I was back home sulking. Her trip to Brazil ruined us in terms of communicating and with the great distance when she was away, we felt like our hands were tied. We decided to take a sort of break in an attempt to give each other space. She returned to Italy a few weeks ago, but we decided that we wouldn’t see each other yet. Our texting was extremely limited unless there was an emergency or if one person felt it necessary to share something. The last I had texted her, it was just to make sure that she landed safely on her return home. Even though we both talked extensively about it to make sure we were on the same page, this whole thing sucked. How do you not talk to the one person that you love and consider to be your best friend? Even though this was just a break, at times it felt like a break up and this terrified me. I sat down on my bed and decided to text her. Pulling the iPhone out of my pocket, I opened up our texts. I typed, ‘Can we talk?’ Locking the phone, I tossed it to the side on the mattress. A few minutes passed before I heard the gentle sound of my text tone. Picking it back up, I saw that it was her responding. ‘Yes, please.’ ‘Are you free now?’ I typed back. ‘Yeah, I’m home.’ ‘Okay, I’ll leave and head over now.’ ‘Okay.’ I slid my phone back into my pocket, stood up, grabbed my keys, a pair of shoes to slip into, and I was out the door.
I pulled into her driveway and turned the car engine off. I couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. I walked up to her front door and before I could even knock, she opened the door. She looked as beautiful as ever as she looked back at me. “Hey,” she said quietly. “Hey,” I responded with a gentle smile. She took a few steps closer to me and reached for my waist. “I missed you so much, A.” Tears welled in her eyes as I clasped her cheeks in my hands. “I missed you more than you know, baby.” Tears streamed down her face now as I pulled her in for a long overdue hug. Her body gently shook against mine as she continued to cry. “Please don’t cry,” I begged. “They’re happy tears, I promise.” “Still…I hate it when you cry.” We pulled away and we held each other’s hands. “I just wanted to say that I’m over this break and not talking to you like we do normally.” “Adrien, I’m over it too. I have been since it started, honestly. I don’t want to break up at all. I’m sorry that I was so bad at communicating with you while I was in Brazil. It was my fault. I just found it hard to focus on the anthropology work out there and you at the same time. I should have tried harder for you.” “Y/N, you were so far so I get it that it was hard to balance the work and our relationship. I don't want to break up either...like ever.” She chuckled and nodded in agreement. I hugged her again saying, “Je t'aime beaucoup.” She nestled her face deeper against my chest. “Baby, I love you too.” Pulling away from the hug, we finally kissed and things felt complete again. Pulling away from her lips I kissed along her neck as her fingers gripped my curly hair. I kissed her on the lips once more and then she took my hand and led me inside her place. In that moment, I couldn't be happier that things were going to go back to the way they were and that she would be right there with me no matter what.
