His boots pound along the dirt of a deer track further and further into the midnight woods, the voices screaming louder in his brain than his own internal whimpering. They all scream ‘RUN!’ so he does, feet churning up the leaf litter.

Ahead there’s a fork around a giant oak tree. Left would take him home, to his little village outside the castle walls. Right takes him away from anything familiar. A thousand voices scream to go left, but a thousand and one voices scream to go right, so he tilts right and thunders further into the dark.

His chest is burning now, breaths squeaking through his lips in thin gasps as sweat stings his eyes and mixes with his tears. He’s been running since the sun set, since he touched the Crown and felt his fingers curl around the gold, and he can feel his body starting to break. There’s blood warmly coating his feet.

He tries to force a thought through, a single pleading ‘Stop!’ but the voices desperately drown him out.

‘RUN! RUN! RUN!’

The Crown wants freedom, an escape, to be as far from the Castle and its rightful owners as possible.

And they’ll use him to run until they find it.
