Richard the Great was a man who,/conquered nations with his fist./And yet, you hold my heart singularly,/with just your voice./Talking to birds who don't understand,/ that you just want to sing along.

Sometimes, you get things right on the first try./Sometimes, you don't need anything beyond the first hand that scratches your chin./Softly, softly.

I wonder if it’s less the thrill of adventure/ that holds her into old age/ and more the memory of new smells, of loud laughter./ Of large hands, holding her close.

She walks out into the wild,/and knows/that there is a place for her there./But also knows, that the kindest place,/the softest one,/is home, where hands will feed her and others,/to whom hunger/is an ineffable part of life.

The comforting rise and fall of heartbeats,/repetitious in their love,/reminds her how,/solid ground, felt so shaky once./How it won't feel that way again.

There is empty space,/on soft grass,/that feels like whining mouths,/and bottomless hunger./But soft beds,/and body warmth,/keep memories away./Feels a little bit like protection,/a little more like family.

The distance she holds you at,/is only pleasurable,/when she can close the gap./When her control is taken away,/the space between you feels like,/echoing/ in a canyon.

There are many things/that frighten children/who see beyond what we can./Yet, he knows there are soft things in this world,/shrimp and warm beds./Orange ears twitch during a sunny morning.

Your blanket is big/ bigger than hers/but the sleeping hours of the day,/are stones in the feet,/of small eyes, and chattering mouths.

Nyx is black and white and has a thing for sniffing eyes and hair. She talks to you and comes when called. She had the loudest purring I've ever heard and snuggles with me when I'm sad.

NyxThe language that bubbles up from you/is incomprehensible to her/but she knows the smell of your hair, that look in your eyes/and recognizes home.
