Documentary Response

This documentary was very interesting to me and showed just how much the internet can affect those that look at it and enjoy everything it has to bring. Throughout the film I saw just how much this fictional character “Slenderman” had a huge impact on the lives of two little girls, Anissa Weier and Payton Leutner. They both were so influenced by Slenderman that they decided to take their best friend into the woods and stab her 19 times with a kitchen knife. They then left her to die as they ran down the highway towards home and were stopped by a police officer. In regards to the case in general I do believe that they should have been tried as adults and not teenagers only because they tried to kill someone. They were not in the right frame of mind but they knew enough morally to know that was not the right or legal thing to do. When you conspire to kill someone it should not matter how old you are, in that moment you decided to be seen and considered as an adult in the eyes of the public and the law in my opinion. Fandom was seen all throughout the documentary from the actual character Slenderman to the way in which the two girls adored him. I however do not think that people have taken their adoration as far as the girls did.

2/18 Monday Blog

For my research project I chose to research Rap and R&B music and how it has shaped the black community. My official research question is, “How has hip-hop and R&B music shaped the way in which black cultures is viewed the world now. Starting with old school and bringing it back to new school, how has it shaped our ideals, beliefs, and values.” I chose this topic because this is something I can relate to. I grew up listening and falling in love to old school Rap and R&B music, and I believe that it has shaped my ideas and values now. In the black community I have noticed that we all listen to essentially the same music. I believe this is because that is what our parents and grandparents passed down to us. They all grew up around the same music and due to them we have found a unique love and appreciation for the same type of music. In my research paper I hope to find that our music has shown us, African-Americans, in a positive light. Yes there are some songs that do not speak about nice or humane things but there are also songs that paint us, African American people in a very positive light. I hope to find that in my research.

Research Progress Report

As far as our research paper goes, I feel as if I have made more progress since the last time we were supposed to do a report. I have written more but still get stumped in my first paragraph. Although I have five more pages to write it is still better than the entire eight. I am actually proud of myself for starting now rather than two days before it is due. I feel like I need to add more in text citations and use quotes more but once I figure out how to incorporate them efficiently then I will be golden. I have not kept up with my “time-frame” that I set for myself and I have noticed because I have not been pacing myself effectively. I need to be writing a little everyday so that when the day comes I am not stressing on how to finish or stuck on where to start. Procrastination has become a beast in my life but I cannot let it take over now. So in conclusion although I have not stayed on track with my timeline I set for myself I have gotten more done than I thought I would and that’s a win in my book.

Evaluation: This website is very credible considering it draws in other viewpoints and even mentions other artists and how they tie into the influence of music

Synthesis: I will use this article to explain how younger generations are being influenced now.

Summary:  R&B music has evolved into the smooth, melancholy, soothing music we call today , “Real R&B”. Such artists like Maxwell and Erykah Badu have added jazz and other sounds to their portfolio as artists.

Evaluation: This website is very useful in providing quotes and showing specific ways in which hip-hop music has influenced those that listen to it.

Synthesis: I will use this article for quotes.

Summary: Music in the entertainment industry has allowed people from all different aspects of life to gather together and share a commonality. The idea that they all love music, no matter the kind.

Evaluation: This website was very useful in showing how not only Hip-Hop and R&B music have influenced the world but also how country, jazz and classical music have shaped society.

Progress Report

For my research project I have not been doing as much as I should have. I feel like since it is so far away I keep pushing it off. This is not good because the deadline will creep up on me before I know it. I told myself I was going to stop procrastinating but here I am, and the only thing I have successfully done is find some of my articles. I have not even stuck to the deadlines I put in place to keep myself on track. The next thing on my list I need to do is read through all of my articles and take out the most important information that I can use to help support my paper. I still plan to use other sources other than the ones I have gathered right now such as magazine articles, documentary video quotes and online posts. These different sources will help me grab information from different demographics and put them together to form a fantastic paper. One thing that I have kept consistent throughout the time we have been working is my question that I want to pose to the audience. It will cause those that are reading to think about their beliefs and values and identify how they coincide with music.

3/11 Monday Blog

Between the end of WWII and the early 1960’s R&B formally known as Rhythm and Blues music emerged. It was created by African-Americans and uniquely tailored in such a way to appeal to them. Well known artists such as Ray Charles, James Brown and Stevie Wonder are some of the most influential and creative R&B artists known to man. The more urban audience came when the employment during the war increased. People began to migrate from rural poor cities therefore creating a younger audience for musical artists everywhere. Some artists began to notice this and chose to not to what was normal and perform in smaller areas focusing on blues-style music. This meant that there were saxophones, pianos and electric guitars being used to bring the artists voice and background into play. Billboard magazine decided to coin the term Rhythm and blues” which reflected a change in the social status and economic power of the time. Atlanta was the pinnacle place of focus for R&B venues like the “Municipal Auditorium Theater” and other places offered live acts. In 1948 Atlanta’s black community then started a late-night R&B show on WGST and became a local talent scout and promoter.

Monday Blog

The purpose of this paper is to educate people on the topic of music and the  influence that it has, or maybe does not have on black culture. How has a genre of music influenced an entire generation, and generations to come. Throughout life growing up most African American kids grew up listening to R&B or Old School rap music in their homes, cars or anywhere else. This is because their parents put it on due to the fact that that was the music of their time. They were not purposefully forcing you to listen to it but rather turning it on for their own listening pleasure. They in turn without knowing shaped our minds and formulated our thoughts this way. R&B and Old School Rap music have a way of putting their lives into one 3 minute song that can absolutely take your breath away.

From this topic I want to learn the history of the music and why the person who first created it did so. I also want to learn why it is so attractive to so many people and if it has anything to do with the smooth sound or the melodious verse of the raps. I am motivated to find this information because I listen to this music and it interests me. This topic is one that I can connect and relate to so learning more about it is something I will enjoy. When you are interested and have a personal opinion or idea about the topic, you are prone to want to actively and find more information about it.

Summary: A group of friends gathered together to share their love for music and the art of hip-hop. The fans were stunned by the groups “jazz-influenced tracks, thought provoking lyrics and bohemian style.”

Evaluation: I enjoyed this article because it showed the inside story of a group of people that joined together to form a band. The article itself was a scholarly article so the validity of it was there.

Synthesis: I will use this information when I want to talk about a specific instance involving actual people. A real life situation that will add context to my story is when I will use this,

Summary: This article spoke about a specific person and their love for hip-hop. It also spoke about how their love was formed and how it was influenced

Evaluation: I will use this article in the same way I will use the one above. This specific article will allow me to use personal stories to add elements to my story that I could not use another way.

Synthesis: I will use this information to add context in the same way I was going to use the article above.

Summary: In this article it spoke about “urban” and the way it is used to describe hip hop and r&b. Conversations about race and gender have started because of this and have “intensified culture wide”

Evaluation: I liked this article because it covered the hard topic of race and gender in music that people do not like to speak up about. It is a culture that people are learning to try to embrace.

Synthesis: I will use this article when I want to talk about the role of race in music in today’s century.

Summary: This essay provides a lot of resources ranging from definitions/overviews to bibliographies and background information.

Evaluation: This article is very valid because it provides bibliographic insight research by librarians worldwide.

Synthesis: This article will really help me delve more into the true backstory of hip hop/r&b culture. It is used to serve as a type of guide for people everywhere.

Researching Poetry?

As a fan of poetry I would say that my “research” consists of listening and watching others perfect their craft. My research is not found in reading articles or papers that people have written about poetry. I find myself spending a lot of time on You-Tube listening to Reyna Biddy or Rudy Francisco talk about all of the things that inspire them to write. Listening to them inspires me to perfect my craft. It’s like when you have a project and you have to go out and gather sources to use in your paper to help you write more about your topic. I go out and listen and gather inspiration from others and then go and write my own masterpiece. Poetry, to me, is not just something that you can look up and read articles about to understand. You need to engulf yourself in the art and sit down and just listen. Listen to the flow, the rhythm and the syllables as they come out of the artists mouth. The art of poetry is one best learned heard not seen. Not only do you have to listen, you have to practice as well because there is no good in not putting actions behind your work.

Fandom?

When it comes to my involvement inside of the fandom, I would say that I am not very involved. I love to write and I love poetry but when it comes to openly sharing my work on online platforms or just in general I do not choose to do so. Not because I am scared of what others might think but just because I enjoy keeping it to myself. I guess in a way I participate in my fandom by continuing to do what I love. By watching and reading others peoples work I am encouraged to keep perfecting my craft and hone in on my skill. I do not feel pressured to participate in my fandom or to do different activities within the fandom because poetry is not something you can force. It has to come naturally. You can read someone else’s work and be inspired to write but if you sit down and nothing comes out then no one can force you to write. That is something that I genuinely love about the art of poetry is that nothing inside of it is forced. Either it comes naturally or it does not come. You can sit down and make yourself muster up something but it will not be authentic and genuine artwork.

Summary:

1. “Why the world needs superheroes” - This article spoke about the importance of superheroes and why the world needs them. In this article we found that two of the worlds largest organizations, Time Warner and The Walt Disney Company own the large majority of superheroes in the world.

2. “The different types of Superheroes” - In this article it spoke about how superheroes can be divided into different subgroups. This can be based off of their particular heritage or superpowers. Some of these groups include, “Martial Artist” or “Brick/Tank.”

3. “Captain Cereal: Saving the day, just in time for breakfast” - This article was unlike the others because this article was essentially a blog post from a fan website. In this post, the author talked about a superhero that he made up and created named Captain Cereal.

4. “Heroes Convention” - This article was found on the website for Heroes Convention. This is a national event that happens annually in Charlotte North Carolina. Teens and adults gather from far and wide to meet and interact with artists and designers.

Evaluation:

1. Inside of this article there are many videos and credible hyperlinks. This suggests that the author/publisher of the site did a thorough job in finding information. The author is Liam Burke, a Senior Media Studies Lecturer at Swinburne.

2. This article was very specific and straight to the point showing that the author was very deliberate about the point he wanted to get across. In each breakdown the author made sure that the way in which he described the abilities or makeup of the character was very well understood.

3. This article could be seen as not very credible because it is a blog website but since it is his individual story that is unique to him I believe that this article is credible. The author goes into detail about the hero and what their expectations are/ what they will be doing.

4. This article is very credible considering that it came from the organizations official website. It can only be edited by the company therefore making it very hard to access privately. Inside of the article were many specific details regarding the startup of the convention and information about Shelton, the man responsible for the Heroes Convention.

Synthesis:

1. I will use the information found in our introduction as well as in my first question that talks about what our fandom is and asks us to provide some context.

2. I will use the information found to provide information to discuss as we go along in our podcast. It will serve as a filler in a sense but will also help answer our questions and provide more context inside of the superhero subgroups.

3. I will use this information to help me figure out how they communicate. This website is catered towards fans and gives them an outlet to freely write and discuss things that interest them specifically.

4. I will use this information to help me figure out how the fans go about communicating. Not only through different media outlets but as well as showing me how they communicate in different states. The convention itself is something that the town and fans surrounding look for every year.

DC or Marvel??

Who doesn’t love watching superheroes tear each other up on the big screen with an extra buttery bucket of popcorn and fizzing soda by their side. The element of food just adds to the excitement of the movie and provides for an overall better time. For our fandom we are researching Superheroes. We chose superheroes because that was a topic that all of us enjoyed and knew a little about but did not know too much about. This way it gave us an opportunity to learn and grow in our knowledge. We did not choose a specific hero in particular but rather them collectively as a whole. Before starting research I did not know anything about them other than that I enjoyed watching them on television. I also know that there is a difference between Marvel and DC Comic Superhero. There is also a semi-huge debate about which group of heroes is better. Personally I enjoy DC Comics but I also enjoy watching Thor and The Hulk fight. I wish that I knew more about their inside stories individually and how they all joined forces to make teams. I also want to know why those certain characters are characterized into those groups.

My Poetry Fandom

Remember when there was that weird part in life when everyone walked around  saying “Chipotle is my life”, well “Poetry is my life” I eat, sleep, and breathe poetry, I am a poet and I know it. Yes I admit to sitting up at odd hours of the night watching “Button Poetry” and dreaming about the day when I might be in front of crowds performing for random people doing something I truly love. I honestly cannot tell you where my love came from or when it started but what I can tell you is that when I am writing I feel as if the world just stops. Like there are no problems, no issues or troubles in life, in that very moment everything is just right. I love to attend poetry events and see other people perfecting their craft and ultimately helping others along the way. My junior year I had the privilege of hearing a poet. that is now one of my favorites, perform at an event. Seeing him and the way he flowed made me realize that poetry isn’t just something we poets do for fun, it is our life.

First Blog?

“Poeticjustice-posts” is the name I chose for my username because poetry is something that lives inside of me. I can put pen to paper and express my deepest fears or loves without anyone ever knowing who I really am. That is, if I never speak in public for everyone to see. But why should I hide a gift so genuine and so pure for fear of exposing myself? Poetry is my means of escape and my world away from worlds. Poetry is my justice in a world where quite frankly there is none..... but we’ll have that discussion another time. So here’s to all the poets, or aspiring poets, out there who are hiding their true talents from themselves. Let your light shine bright for all to see and let your rhythm free. Touch souls, bodies, and minds with nothing but your voice ...and just let go.
