there is something so fascinating about setsu and yuri's relationship to me in gnosia

like:

setsu intended to loop forever because of how much they came to care for yuri, only for yuri to throw that away just to go back and save setsu(again) because they couldn't stand the thought of them looping alone forever

While I do see their relationship as romantic, there's something so special about it. Not in the way where two characters confess their undying love for each other at the end of the movie-

But in the way as in "I chose to save you because you changed my life permanently and I can't stand to go on without you."

Obviously, I didn't start watching Gnosia for setsuri. I started watching because of the beautiful animation, soundtrack, and the characters.

But the fact that Gnosia gives us this relationship between two people who fought so hard to get their happy ending, a relationship that isn't necessarily defined as romantic or platonic-

Well. I've always cheered whenever two characters get together. But if I'm being honest, romance has always been really...weird for me, personally.

The fact that Yuri and Setsu have this type of bond with how they care for each other not based on physical attraction, but just based on the fact that both of them choose each other despite the circumstances is just so nice.

And again, because this is my favorite ancient play, I will insist on showing one of my all-time favorite quotes from it. Theseus debates the value of equality/democracy over monarchy, and says that because a king takes and takes and gives nothing, then:

Why would anyone want to bother with wealth and livelihood for his boys if it will all end up in the ruler’s hands? Or his girls. Why bother raising sweet daughters in your house if they, too, will end up with the ruler, whenever he wants them, leaving you with tears of sorrow? I’d rather die than have my daughters dragged against their will into a wedding bed!

Fundamentally he’s arguing more than just that monarchy is bad, but that any level of class disparity or special status under the law is inherently unjust. A king could just as easily be a president, a congressman, celebrity, or cop. All of their exemptions/paying off of the law would sicken him.

He’s truly delightful. A lot of his political opinions are genuinely progressive/radical even for today in some cases.

There is nothing more hateful to a state than a tyrant. There, first, there are no common laws because one person rules, holding the law in his control. This is not equality. When laws are written both the weak and the wealthy receive equal judgment. It is possible then for the weak to accuse the lucky whenever they are slandered and the smaller person overcomes the great if his cause is just. This is freedom.

Plutarch’s Life of Theseus gives us a good idea how he was viewed by the disenfranchised:

And now he lies buried in the heart of the city [of Athens], near the present gymnasium, and his tomb is a sanctuary and place of refuge for runaway slaves and all men of low estate who are afraid of men in power, since Theseus was a champion and helper of such people during his life, and graciously received the supplications of the poor and needy.

And that’s before we even get into how he acts in Sophocles or any of Euripides’ other plays <33 in Callimachus’ Hecale, it seemed that he had adopted his progressive opinions from her, after learning that a king had forced her entire family to fight in a war they wanted no part in, leaving her abandoned and alone after they died. He wanted to support and honor her as much as possible

Hesiod used two different origins for the Fates in the Theogony, but I have yet to see anyone assume that this must mean Zeus and Themis had a threesome with Nyx the way some assume that Nonnos' using two different origins for Pasithea/the Graces in the Dionysiaca must mean that Hera and Dionysos slept together.

And mind you, we're talking about the Dionysiaca here, where Ariadne is killed once by spear and once by Medusa's head, where Aphrodite is sometimes the daughter of Zeus and sometimes of Ouranos, where Aphrodite gives birth to Eros immediately after she is born from the sea and also gives birth to him during her marriage to Hephaistos.

An ancient Greek text need not be 100% internally consistent. The Theogony is not, the Iliad is not, the Dionysiaca is most certainly not.

This reluctance to even consider that an ancient Greek text doesn't have to be 100% internally consistent is also the reason why the idea that Hephaistos must have been thrown from Olympos twice is so popular, although it is quite obvious that those are two alternative versions of the same event even if both appear in the Iliad, and subsequent accounts of Hephaistos' fall use either one or the other, never both. As far as I know no later author takes the fact that His fall from Olympos is related twice in the Iliad in different ways to mean that he was thrown one time by Hera and a second time by Zeus.

It's not like that would be the only instance of inconsistency in the Iliad, either. In Book 14 Hera tells Aphrodite that she was entrusted by Rhea to Tethys and Okeanos to be raised while Zeus was fighting and imprisoning Kronos, and it's pretty clear from the language used that she was a child at the time. A few lines later, however, we are told that Zeus and Hera slept together for the first time without the knowledge of their parents - parents, not just mother, not caretakers; the word used is τοκῆας = parents, begetters, derived from τίκτω = bring into the world, engender, beget, bring forth, give birth to, bear. These can hardly refer to anyone but Kronos and Rhea, their parents in the Iliad as well as everywhere else.

"Zeus should've just chosen Hera as the fairest/most beautiful of the gods it wasn't That Hard" actually it WAS that hard because if Zeus' only role was being Hera's husband and not Olympus' king I don't think he'd have a doubt to say his wife is objectively the hottest because she is, but because he is King of The Gods and considering the other major contenders are his favorite daughter and his aunt-daughter-daughter-in-law it was obviously crucial for the judge to be impartial.

Also I don't think Hera would be the type to enjoy being called the best if it came with some bias / wasn't fair, yes she likes to play dirty at times but she does it in the way it feels deserved to her. Her vanity is quite specific in the sense.
