Artificial Intelligence is not only responsible for worrying amounts of earth-warming greenhouse gases: the technology's environmental footp
AI-related water consumption could equal the basic annual domestic needs of 1.3 billion people by the end of the decade, while its land footprint may exceed 14,500 square kilometres — roughly twice the size of the Jakarta metropolitan area.
[...]
Public debate has largely centred on the energy required to train advanced AI models, but the study finds that day-to-day usage accounts for roughly 80 to 90 per cent of total energy demand. The scale is striking: one widely used AI service is estimated to process around 2.5 billion prompts per day, consuming hundreds of gigawatt-hours of electricity each year. Energy use also varies widely depending on the task. Generating a single AI image can require more than a thousand times the energy of simple text classification, while video generation demands even greater resources. Efficiency improvements alone are unlikely to offset these rising demands. The report points to the so-called rebound effect, in which lower costs and improved performance drive higher usage, ultimately increasing total resource consumption.
[...]
At the same time, the report warns of a growing electronic waste challenge, with AI infrastructure projected to generate up to 2.5 million tonnes of e-waste annually by 2030. Much of this burden is likely to fall on lower-income countries with limited capacity for safe disposal.

Nepal; a woman goes to the market to sell her flowers. Olivier Föllmi
“There are many whites who are trying to solve the problem. But you never see them going under the label of liberals. That white person that you see calling himself a liberal is the most dangerous thing in the entire western hemisphere. He’s the most deceitful. He’s like a fox. And a fox is always more dangerous in the forest than the wolf. You can see the wolf coming, you know what he’s up to. But the fox will fool you. He comes at you with his mouth shaped in such a way that even though you see his teeth you think he’s smiling and take him for a friend.”

and I pretend my left hand is not my hand and touch my forehead and I pretend my lips are not my lips and kiss the back of my left hand and I stand under the shower for a little too long and play music I barely listen to. This loneliness haunts my bones and all I can do is pretend.

I haven’t been on this app in a while, but I know a Black man, Keith Porter, was murdered by ICE on New Year’s Eve (Rest in Power) in Cali. Just one of the countless Black people who’ve been murdered by ICE and other agents of the state.
I log back into this app and see the conversations around the white woman, Renee Good, who was just recently killed. And I can’t help but notice the stark difference in circulation of news and boosting of stories between both of them across this app…
Shit has BEEN happening to Black people across administrations and is currently happening to Black people under this administration, and is met by crickets. Yet when it starts touching white people, I see real anger start being felt from the gen pop followed by amplification and co-opting of Black terms and memorialization… I stg it takes everything in me to give af about yall.
**Edited: linking a gfm for Keith
***update: the gfm is unavailable. Will post an updated link as soon as I have one (removing the link until then for less confusion)
