I'm gonna be so honest, the general response to the announcement that Mario and Peach are not canonically dating is annoying me so much.

Y'all are acting like you can't be close to someone without having a strictly romantic relationship. Saying that they're "just" friends or that Mario got "friendzoned" is so dismissive of their bond, and it shows how little you understand their dynamic.

Yes, Peach kisses Mario on the cheek and nose often. Yes, that is an act of affection that is commonly done between couples. But you're telling me that in the world with mushroom people, warp pipes, and star gods, the thing you find unbelievable is the fact that sometimes people can kiss each other without necessarily dating?

If you actually paid attention to their interactions, you'd know that they care about each other deeply. Mario would do anything for the people he's close to, and Peach never loses faith that he'll come to save her when she needs it. They're extremely close, and yes, they truly love each other.

Their relationship is much more than what can be described by just calling them a romantic couple. Putting them in that box is a disservice to the depth and nuance within their bond. If anything, I'm glad that type of nuanced relationship is present in media, as it shows that not all relationships can be categorized into just one type.

At the end of the day, I'm still going to ship them together. But I'll do it in a way that's in-character for both of them, just like I always have.
