For those wondering about the fox. Grace has a subtle motif with this animal throughout the movie, but especially this shot where they pack this toy fox with his belongings on the Hail Mary. canonically, if will were to have to lose mike, he’d want it to be over quick like ripping off a bandaid. instead he had to watch the boy he knew and loved slowly become something he wasn’t, until he eventually moved on and learned how to cope with not being able to love him.

this is still insane to me. the van scene explicitly spelled out how will would have wanted things to go if mike didn't love him back - he wanted it quick and relatively painless so he could move on. the duffers completely ignored the lines written for will in the van scene to instead drag his unrequited love for mike further into s5, even regressing will's growth by making him randomly search for signals of mike's reciprocation despite him seemingly moving on at the end of s4. will's pain was endlessly extended and there was no moment where he actually got to name his love for mike and truly let it all out so he could get closure. he had to move on without even having all the answers and after years of mixed messages, confusion, shame, and sadness :(
