It's a bummer that the writing sucked and their story wasn't given its due, but I still can't take the Jancy breakup seriously. It just really felt so inconsequential and contrived and baffling that it's hard to be moved either way about it. And I don't even necessarily mean all the longing looks or both of them plastering themselves to the other's side or Jonathan repeatedly jumping headlong into danger for Nancy. The epilogue just feels like such a pause. Such an "eat their cake and have it too" ending.
In case anyone wants it, hereās the full scripted goo room scene:
I canāt believe they took āWow. Okay. they invented a genre of musicā¦but yeah šā away from us man fuck this show
In the time that I have been away from the Jancy tag, I have been thinking in this scenario where Jonathan doesn't get hit by the breakup until someone asks him out at NYC and he realize that he CAN look at someone else, that he CAN flirt with someone else, that he CAN have dates with someone else, AND HE FUCKING HATES IT š„²

āListen if this is how you're going to be the whole time then maybe-ā āIt's not that, I just don't like airplane bathroomsā Jonathan confesses, as they make their way through the terminal.Ā āOh, I didn't know thatā Nancy mutters, almost more to herself than to him. Ā Ā āWhy would you?ā he responds with a laugh, butĀ it comes harsher than he intended.Ā He can feel a part of her shrink. Maybe this is a bad idea. A decade ago, he wouldāve said she knew him better than anyone, but thereās too many layers between now and then. He doubts she has the patience to peel them back.Ā Theyāre not seventeen anymore. āWhat did you do when you went to Africa?ā she questions, loudly, assertively, as though sheās recommitting to her study of him.Ā āHeld itā he shrugs. Why is he telling her that?Ā āThe whole time?ā Nancy responds, skeptically. Ā āNoā Jonathan laughs, easier this time āWe had like four layoversāĀ Ā āCNN spared no expenseā she jokes, tucking into the Hudson NewsĀ āThey really didn'tāĀ he murmurs as she peruses the books.Ā āBut you like it right?ā she asks, as she reads the dust-jacket of High Fidelity. āCan't complainā he answers, itās at least partly true. Sure, the traveling is terrible and the deadlines are stressful but for a kid from the wrong side of the tracks in Hawkins he hasnāt done too poorly for himself.Ā Ā āI'm sure the Emmy helpsā Nancy snides and for the tiniest moment theyāre in the woods again.
I do not care if itās unrealistic there is something so compelling about two people who have known each other their entire lives but donāt really see each other until theyāre forced together during the worst week of their lives. Going through something incredibly traumatic and they are the only ones that understand exactly what happened because they were there for each other. Somehow falling in love with each other in the midst of it. Then trying their fucking hardest to deny feelings and resume ānormalāĀ life but they canāt because of the way that theyāre bonded together. And they have a matching mark that they both chose to give themselves to prove it. Choosing to be in love knowing that they would each change that first week if they could. Looking at all the garbage theyāve gone through and knowing they can endure whatever comes next even if it seems impossible. Reaching for each otherās hands as they brace for the apocalypse because there isnāt an alternative.
The way this show used silence and gave space to that silence to show jancy's intimacy and bond is truly a lost art in all the following seasons.
Forever mourning the monster hunting trio.
Jonathan, Nancy, and your friend Steve
imagine jancyās future children notice mommy and daddy have matching scars and they ask what it means, how it got there, ohhhhh
there is a light and it never goes out.
Jonathan Byers
"you're relentless you know that" all affection with the little smirk as he agrees to do exactly what she wants and-
half his s3 dialogue in here btw
please enjoy his bitching, his whumping, his whispering, panting, and ānanceeā-ing
i miss him
Jonathan being tempted by conformity (the ring), being pushed on him, despite knowing itās not what Nancy (or he) needs or wants, and ultimately rejecting it shows just how well he knows Nancy. In this essay, Iāllā¦
It DOES make an interesting mirror to Steve in season four, who offers Nancy the kind of conformity that she has been pushing against the whole time. Because heās poorly suited for Nancy and doesnāt understand her at all.
