This is a sideblog that is intended to be similar to the many other oss-official blogs like x11-official, kde-plasma-official, etc.

I intend to dump my tech related ramblings here :3

Feel free to send asks rambling about anything tech related too! I love hearing people gush about how they finally got some technology working on their machine or whatever :3 be excited! i love seeing you all excited :3

Some stuff that’s less about the blog and more about me under the cut

I’ve cycled through a number of different distros and always enjoy trying new ones for fun. My main machines do use Arch :3

I use Neovim for editing, with clangd and rust-analyzer as my LSP servers of choice for C(++) and Rust respectively :3

I have lots of other interests too (feel free to check my main if you wanna talk games and fandom and stuff :3)

yeah so running this blog was fun but i've found that it's been getting a lot less attention than my main (obviously) (that's how sideblogs work) and honestly, even though i originally wanted to do this sideblog so i could separate my tech ramblings from my fandom posting, i'm now a bit more open to keeping things all on my main blog (my pre-established audience will get to see my tech posts so they'll probably get more traction :3)

i'll probably either shut this blog down or just leave it here without any activity and switch my tech posting to that blog instead :3

ngl i think bash is like. fine. but i absolutely despise this system.

/etc/bash.bashrc gets sourced TOO MANY TIMES I DON'T CARE IF THERE'S A REASON TO DO IT THIS WAY WHY IS IT LIKE THIS AUGHHH

listen ok this is one of those examples of a system where i'm like "ok that's horrible" and then i think about how i'd do it if i had free reign to do it differently and i can't come up with anything better. But like. I hate this because. If you use a display manager (which a lot of people do), you never GET a login shell so all of those files never get sourced UNLESS your display manager sources them ON ITS OWN (ly tries to do this).

it just. ugh. i hate this system a whole lot. I wish there was a better way but i can't think of one. so whatever i guess.

What’s very funny about this is the Discord “checkpoint” will fail if you’ve actually calibrated your privacy settings to limit how much spying they do. It makes this whole method of continuing to normalize and even celebrate the death of privacy transparent for what it is.

i have this which is like fine i guess. To my knowledge, even the "Use data to make Discord work" is a little predatory/concerning (allegedly they log things like the timestamp you start viewing and stop viewing every channel, each time you switch channels). So, take "maximize my privacy" with a grain of salt. It's just the best you can do

But seriously, it's okay to use Linux, even if you're not a tech person. Linux isn't any harder to use than Windows, you just have to care a little about how your computer works. I can do anything I want on Linux. Firefox is a great browser. I can play games on Steam. I use a Markdown app for distraction-free tabletop RPG writing. I can navigate the OS almost entirely by keyboard, which feels awesome.

You can be a casual user too.

You know you can just try Linux if you want to. Just boot it from the thumb drive like I did. It won't even affect your Windows install this way. You don't have to especially hate being a Windows user to become a Linux user, you can just want to try something new. Remember when being on the computer used to be fun? You can have fun on the computer again. Just try it out for a while and if you don't like it that's okay. But if you do want to switch, I'm here to help.

honestly i use my laptop very casually too. I use Pop! with nearly all defaults and lately I've only used the terminal for ansible, scp and ssh. I have the skills to break and fix loads of things but my laptop is boring and that's good
