ps/2 ports turned out perfect for turning into ear studs

there's been some interest in how these were made, so!

i bought a pack of 10mm stud earring bezels, a bunch of pcb mount ps/2 ports, and 10mm OD stainless pipe (not pictured), all from aliexpress

the original plan was to use inline ps/2 ports but the metal sleeve on them was really soft and deformed easily when trying to cut with a rotary tool, so i settled on stainless pipe instead

step 1: remove the metal housing and pins from the port and deconstruct it down to just the centre plastic bit with some side cutters (extract the pins before cutting it down to the centre bit, metal is crunchy)

step 2: cut a ~10mm length of the stainless pipe (don't be like me, secure the pipe properly and use eye protection when using a rotary tool)

step 3: mix up some two-part epoxy, gently align in the stud bezel and let dry

alas they're far from functional ports, but it's a cute lil project and will look good on you :D

My friend got a surprise when he uninstalled a package from a Linux system and it took something that he wanted with it, so I've been explaining how package managers deal with dependencies.

If you're coming from Windows, be very aware of what you're uninstalling, what it depends on, and most importantly, what depends on it. That list of changes before you say yes matters, so take the time to look though it, and know what you're actually changing.

Software on Unix-like systems doesn't come in bloated, fully contained, self-managed units, like on Windows (with some exceptions). They link to one another, and create entire chains of dependencies, so be aware of what you're changing when playing with packages.

this is one danger that windows creates, on windows it trains you to just uninstall stuff without reading

on linux this can be dangerous because of exactly that, packages needing a different package and you uninstalling a dependency is like pulling out a jenga block. read what your distro is telling you, especially if it asks for confirmation and if you are unsure, either read up what it means or don't do it just to be on the safe side

this is also what happened to linus (the tech tips variant, not the cool one) when he tried to install steam on his first linux challenge where the package manager tried to tell him his desktop environment was going to be uninstalled and he just input "yes, i know what i am doing" without actually knowing it

and windows prepared him for that

(may differ slightly depending on android version and manufacturer firmware. you can't just search settings for "advertising ID" of course 🔪)

iOS:

Settings ➡️ privacy ➡️ tracking ➡️ toggle "allow apps to request to track" to OFF

and ALSO settings ➡️ privacy ➡️ Apple advertising ➡️ toggle "personalized ads" to OFF
